I highly doubt he'll be number 2 if he signs, you don't go from being first choice for club and country to sitting on the bench here whereby Valdes has become accustom to it now
I disagree, Valdes will be anything but happy to sit on the bench for another year, especially behind someone who is nowhere near as established or highly regarded as the man he was behind last year.

This can't actually be real, he's a country mile off being good enough. If we sign him that will handicap us immediately, we'll have 2 keepers that are not of the required level and both will be a bullseye for every team we play.

Have you watched him more than a couple of times or are you judging primarily on reputation?

Watched him a good few times....Doesn't fill me with confidence.

What do you think?

Don't be an arse.

He had to sub him for penalties. So, if he suits the system, what he gonna do?! Sub him everytime we concede a penalty?

Not sure if Cillessen is good enough, but why do people keep mentioning him being switched out for Krull for the penalty shootout in the World cup? That was a tactical switch by LVG because Krull is better at saving penalties. During our Champions league final against Chelsea, Fergie put Nani and Anderson into the match because he knew that their was going to be a shootout, it;s just a tactical switch.

Cillessen hasn't saved a penalty in his career so far.

If so, should check out the US U-20 keeper, Zach Steffen. He saves them for fun.

Seriously, if LVG signs Cillessen, he'd be choice 1b to Valdes 1a. You don't want 2 starting GK's, neither of which is EPL battle-hardened.

This does seem like Blind all over again and it didn't take long for him to shut up his doubters

Apart from the WC I've never seen him play but he looked fine there

Don't know the stats as far as saving penalties, but it's not like he will never save one. If Hoek thinks he can work with Cillessen, then i would not question the transfer, if it is LVG, then i would worry. Hoek has a reputation of being a top goalkeeping coach, so he might have seen something in Cillessen that he liked.

No matter which league you play in, a shot on target is something that needs to be saved. I highly doubt that the quality of finishing is significantly higher in the PL. The game might be quicker though.

All I'm saying is, focus on defense before GK. That way you can adjust the requirement for your GK depending on the defense in front of him.

The Dutch league is notorious for weak defenders. Stam was the last quality Dutch defender from what I can remember and there have been like 15 years now. For every VdS there are 100 Van der Gouw's.

Also being 26 with 60-70(for Ajax) games in Eredivisie doesn't fill me with confidence.

Agreed. Nothing wrong with him at all, and wouldn't be surprised to see him come in and quietly shut the doubters up.

Is it true that Valdez is on +100k a week? It would be stupid to have a second GK that is paid that much.

Valdes only has barely a year left on his contract, I don't think the club bought him as the long term solution anyway. He was here mostly for his rehabilitation from his injury.

Normally, Monaco are paying almost all of it.

"Sources in the Netherlands, meanwhile, have played down the notion that United may sign the Ajax goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen to replace De Gea. United manager Louis van Gaal is thought to have indicated privately weeks ago Cillessen was not his target."

From Independent article.

He's a pretty down to earth guy, he took his chance at Ajax when Vermeer made too many howlers 6 months before the WC. He accepted being subbed off pretty quickly saying 'We're a team and we're doing this together'. He's an all-round keeper with the occasional howler himself, but he's been great ever since he's been first choice. He doesn't know fear or pressure in a game: I've seen him turn top strikers in the CL so many times when they tried to put pressure on him. In his pre-WC year he was voted Voetbal International player of the year, and last season he was Ajax player of the season so he indeed has come a long way in a short time.

I haven't seen every match of him to form a good judgement, but from what I've seen he's been good. For me that's not enough to earn a transfer here, but I'm sure van Gaal/Hoek will judge him better than I do. I can only see this transfer happening if there are no other available keepers out there who are good at the sweeping part though. I don't see it as a particular strenght from Cillessen but he's decent at it.

We could do a whole lot worse than Cillessen.

Having seen pretty much every Ajax match this season I can only completely agree with you. Has a lot of good moments, the occasional shit moments and is pretty much always level headed and cool. With Vermeer declining, he saw a chance and took it.

Important to note however, is the fact that he recently signed a new deal and expressed his desire to stay at Ajax. If he's making a transfer, it will be to a club where he is #1, he won't want to lose his spot as the NT goalkeeper.

All this negativity is because he looks like a massive pussy- that is all. We need to look past the pussy.

I know, I've also read that article. I think Cillessen knows staying at Ajax will be best for him, he's a late bloomer(?) at 26 and is at a good club where he's guaranteed first choice to develop. He's been on the bench alot in his carreer and only played 2 seasons at Ajax now, there is no rush for him to move as he said so himself. This transfer rumour is Dutch connection bollocks.

Besides that I'm sure van Gaal wants a keeper who's better at sweeping or has the potential to. Cillessen is decent at it but it's not really his strong point yet. Lindegaard didn't fit the keeper profile and that's why van Gaal said he signed Valdes, whatever keeper he signs if de Gea leaves will fit that profile too.
