I'd say it's perfectly fair to judge him on his WC performances and CL performances - as they're the biggest games (by far) that he's taken part in.

I agree, to some extent, but even then he played a very decent WC and has had good CL performances. Him being subbed off by Louis before the shootout says nothing about his performances at the WC, in case people are judging with that in mind.

He was shaky, his handling was poor, and he didn't appear to have much of a command over his defence. Oh and he got subbed for a penalty shootout...

If you consider that I'd say 95% of opinions on the Caf were formed at the WC, why do you think so many people have a poor opinion of him?

Because people pretend to know what they are talking about, and they want Cech.
Cillessen had a good world cup, which doesn't mean that we should sign him, Ochoa for example had a good world cup but isn't good enough.

People are judging him only on the WC aren't they? I haven't seen him for Ajax myself.
Player of the season for Ajax in my book. He's grown a lot this year with his WC experience.

Having said that, I would not have him as our #1. #2, maybe. But I can't see him come in to be the backup, his position with Oranje will be affected if he's not playing, just like Vorm. Vorm is not being selected anymore.

You seem to believe that rumor, why?

Not that I necessarily believe this one but that it doesn't seem likely we are getting the others. We've done a good job of keeping things quiet recently admittedly so it could be that we are but I'm not confident.

If this rumor is true, we'll have a very very very weak keeper.

I would rather keep Valdes as number one than Cilessen.

A lot of these articles are click bait, not using their own sources, hiding behind according to reports - pretty much what the Metro do.

I don't understand why he's so interested in Cillessen. He's a half decent keeper - we all saw that at the World Cup, but we also saw many flaws.

He's too weak and skinny to be a dominant Premier League goalkeeper. Yes I know De Gea was like that, but we signed him when he was 20/21 or something, and now that he's 24 he's had a few seasons to get used to the league and develop physically as well. Should he leave this season, he's leaving a much more aggressive and strong keeper than when he came.

Cillessen is 26 (?). If it takes him as long as De Gea to build himself up and learn to be as aggressive, then he'll be 29/30. I know that's not old for a keeper, but it's not exactly young.

Louis, just go for Bernd Leno for feck sake.

His stats are impressive to be honest. Hopefully, if we manage to shore up the defense, the quality of the GK will matter less.

He is a good gk, very composed and calm. Rarely makes a mistake and his passing is pretty decent. I can see why we are linked to him. Only concern is his physicality. Whether or not he can fill DDG his shoes remains to be seen.

Im guessing we will be keeping Valdes, so they will compete for the number 1 spot

Based on what I saw from Cilessen a the WC, and the few games I saw in CL, he's not good enough to be our number 1.

Valdes can be good enough, only if he's fully recovered. But I think that there's no match between both of them

This rumour coupled with LvG's transfer history is really starting to worry me.

My stats in the Sunday league are equally impressive to Hazard and Costa, unfortunately not a single United representative has called yet.

Maybe they will if you make it to the WC and CL like Cillessen.

I agree with Jacob: His stats are good. I know people will dismiss them due to it being a weaker league but weaker league surely does not account for stats like having faced more shots than DDG and having saved a higher percentage of them? Or the fact he came out for more crosses and won more of them than DDG.

The highlights clip I posted yesterday shows a good all round blend of skills. @NL Max any idea on his intelligence and mental side of the game? With only 100 club games played, he seems to have come a long way in a short amount of time.

He's a pretty down to earth guy, he took his chance at Ajax when Vermeer made too many howlers 6 months before the WC. He accepted being subbed off pretty quickly saying 'We're a team and we're doing this together'. He's an all-round keeper with the occasional howler himself, but he's been great ever since he's been first choice. He doesn't know fear or pressure in a game: I've seen him turn top strikers in the CL so many times when they tried to put pressure on him. In his pre-WC year he was voted Voetbal International player of the year, and last season he was Ajax player of the season so he indeed has come a long way in a short time.

I haven't seen every match of him to form a good judgement, but from what I've seen he's been good. For me that's not enough to earn a transfer here, but I'm sure van Gaal/Hoek will judge him better than I do. I can only see this transfer happening if there are no other available keepers out there who are good at the sweeping part though. I don't see it as a particular strenght from Cillessen but he's decent at it.

We could do a whole lot worse than Cillessen.

We should consider re-signing Foster while at it

No matter which league you play in, a shot on target is something that needs to be saved. I highly doubt that the quality of finishing is significantly higher in the PL. The game might be quicker though.

All I'm saying is, focus on defense before GK. That way you can adjust the requirement for your GK depending on the defense in front of him.

If we're so obsessed with keepers that are good on the ball lets just gazump villa for huddlestone and give him a month with hoek.

I've just been to Amsterdam with the lads and spoke to a few Ajax season ticket holders and they all said he was a fantastic keeper . They all said he was by far the best in the Dutch league .

Zoet from PSV let in too many cheap goals and Vermeer from Feyenoord was a bit worse too. Cillessen definately was the best and has been ever since he's a starter at Ajax. Definately has potential but I'm not sure where his peak lies. I'd rather see him stay at Ajax for another year, he already spent much of his carreer on a bench.

Could you specify on that? Have seen all Ajax games for the past years (God help me) and I strongly disagree.

He's very well rounded except for his inability to stop penalties, therefore I can only describe his weakness as the occasional howler aka a cheap goal. He still punches alot of balls and I've seen some corners where he missed completely, nothing he can't improve on mind. I see him right now as a very solid goalkeeper who's sometimes brilliant, sometimes bad but most of the times he's just good.

You'd swear RedCafe religiously watched the Eredivisie. I'd say about 5% of us have watched him more than ten times.

I highly doubt he'll be number 2 if he signs, you don't go from being first choice for club and country to sitting on the bench here whereby Valdes has become accustom to it now
