Jan Vertonghen

My guess is Spurs will renew the loan deal for Adebayor. City would prefer to sell him, but they'd find it difficult to give him away on £220k per week. And why should he accept less?

That would of course allow him to play against us and Chelsea in the league, but of course not City themselves - you might be on to something there.

Should be announced officially very soon now ... this weekend by all accounts.

Spurs aren't hanging around this summer. Who is next? Adebayor on a permanent is my guess.

Aren't hanging around? You've been very close to Vertonghen for about three weeks now. Just get it done!

True, but there was some dispute between the player and Ajax over a 15% cut of the transfer fee ... nothing to do with Spurs really.

But what I meant was that Levy usually plays the "lets see who blinks first" game when negotiating fees and the deals only get done at the 11th hour on the last day of the window.

.... not this summer though.

"We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Jan Vertonghen, subject to a medical."

Excellent. A first XI CB pairing of Kaboul and Vertonghen, with Dawson and Caulker as backup.

What kind of fee are we talking about? And has King been offered a new deal yet?
It's reported to be 9m euros + 3m euros potenial add-ons, which in total is around £9.6m.

However, Dutch Ceefax says around 8m euros, so does Dutch media NOS (the equivalent of the BBC), though this probably doesn't include add-ons.

King I think is retiring (though not officially confirmed), but will be offered a role within the club - perhaps coaching, perhaps ambassadorial, perhaps a combination of the two.

Be interesting to see if Vertonghen's able to lead a defence in a new team right from the off, because Kaboul certainly isn't going to do that.

Bit harsh, Kaboul was probably our best defender last season.

Kaboul was an absolute beast last year, particularly first half of the season.

Nah, Kaboul was good last season. He has come on leaps and bounds. Strange criticism and rather unfounded.

Indeed. And actually, usually all of the centrebacks at the club recently have needed King or Gallas holding their hands. Last season, Kaboul played well next to anyone put alongside him and even helped Gallas and King after he jarred his knee.

I think (and hope) Vertonghen and Kaboul will make a good partnership actually and it will mean that we have two defenders (along with BAE) who are good at bringing the ball out.

Very happy with this signing and with the Un-spurs like getting the business done early.

-Very well run club
-Levy is very good at squeezing every last penny out of sales of both big players and squad players.
-London, high prices
-Smallest wage bill by tens of millions when compared to the two Manchesters, Liverpool and the other two London clubs
-We've actually only spent about 3.5 million net per transfer window since Redknapp's arrival, most of that in one big splurge in his first January
-Vertonghen is in the last year of his contract and is therefore actually quite cheap

Didn't realize he was in the last year of his contract, explains that price. Peanuts for a guy who will be one of the best defenders in Europe imo.

Great deal for Spurs.

Excellent signing for Spurs. Need a good replacement for Modric if he leaves like expected, but otherwise they are very well stocked in pretty much every department. Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghen and BAE is a very good back line.

I would imagine Dawson and Vertonghen will be the first choice central defence. Kaboul can deputise and play on the right as well i think for Walker

Kaboul started most for them at CB last season, earning those starts too and he'll be deputising? :wenger:

I'd say Dawson will be backup for Kaboul, rather than the other way around.

Dawson was out but when fit Kaboul played alongside him and was preferred other times leaving Dawson on the bench to my knowledge.

Something happened to King halfway through last season, he jarred his knee or something Redknapp said and had bits of it floating around in the knee cavity. Once this happened, his mobility overnight, already compromised because of his lack of cartilage, became non-existent.

At this point, and arguably even before this, Kaboul became our number one centreback.

Dawson will be back-up for Kaboul imo, it had become that way with Redknapp last season and I suspect AVB will continue this.

I don't disagree but then many have said the same about Evans for us last season, but no-one would claim he's the leader of the backline. I think the same point applies here with Kaboul as even if he was much the more dominant defender alongside both Gallas and King, he still benefited from having their experience alongside him. Just my opinion but Kaboul's still a bit rash and lacks composure so I'd be surprised to see him lead a relatively young back-line. And I think it's asking a lot of Vertonghen, so we could see some fairly calamitous moments there if neither are up to it...I could be very wrong, but if anyone's to lead that defence I'd back the Belgian over the Frenchman, personally.

He and Kaboul would suit AVB's high pressing, run-around-like-a-mentalist-on-fire backline perfectly.
