I'd certainly question that after his performances this season.

He started very well for Spurs at CB. Their fans think he's brilliant. In general he's played well this season at LB as well, but in the last couple of games he's struggled there. But LB isn't his preferred position.

He's someone we should have definitely looked to sign.

Santi Cazorla is the gettable player that we have no excuse for not signing.

So with Van Gaal appointed as our new manager, we have a coach who really likes defenders who are very comfortable on the ball. He stated on Dutch tv. last night that he already discussed transfers with the club/Woodward. Looking back, the defender Louis Van Gaal used mostly during his managerial career would be Frank de Boer if I'm not mistaken. I think he has played under Van Gaal for more than 10 years.

Vertonghen is pretty much a modern day version of Frank de Boer. Was voted best player of the Dutch league at Ajax so Van Gaal knows him, he has Champions League and Premier League experience and has the right age. Might play for Belgium next to Kompany instead of left back and really excel in Brazil. Has 55 caps for Belgium.

With Van Gaal preferring one right footed and one left footed centre back in most of the defenses he has used if he had the players for it, would Vertonghen be an option for us? Are we even doing business with Spurs ever again, I believe Levy doesn't like us that much, especially with Van Gaal chose us over Spurs.

All in all, he might be a 'surprising' target for us, and I'm curious how likely people think this will be.

Wonder how much Levy would be able to screw us for on this deal?

He's looking for Champions League football apparently.

City might come for him if he plays well next to Kompany at the World Cup? Don't know how likely that is, he played a lot of left back too, but with Vermaelen not in the greatest form and all...

Him not being good enough?

Could be, but in a Van Gaal system he probably would perform really well. Think he would make an excellent pair with every one of Smalling, Jones or Evans.

Was really fcuked off in the first place when Spurs relatively stole him for like 10 million quid, Eriksen too.

Hate those cnuts!

He's a strange one, good on the ball and better in the opposition box than his own, which is odd for a defender.

The tools are there to be a top, top player but he's no Vidic or even Rio when it comes to brave defending.

He 's one of those players who should have been converted. I just dont trust him as a defender.

A player who's not that great, that Levy would make us grossly overpay for, in a market that values David effin Luiz at £50m.

No thanks.

I would of honestly thought that Barca would be in for him or am i overrating Vertonghen?
I think you're overrating Barcas ability to buy a suitable defender to actually play in defence instead of constantly trying to play midfielders there.

Spurs only payed 10 million for him though, so I agree with you, but what if we could sign him for 25 million?

I'm almost sure Van Gaal would really like to have a left footed central defender who suits his philosophy of play. But aside from Bruno Martins Indi and Vertonghen I'm not too sure who that would or could be, and BMI is not ready to come in and immediately dominate the league. A Belgian paper also wrote about us being interested in Vermaelen, he's got the same agent as Van Persie I believe. Would not make me happy, but perhaps he would be cheaper than Vertonghen and more experienced that BMI.

Really wonder what we have got in mind for the centre half position this summer, don't have the faintest clue of what will happen.

I think he'd be a waste of £25m and would rather play Evans as the left sided centre back. I think he would actually be one of our current players LVG will take a shine to.

Agreed. Evans will be a mainstay when fit this season under LVG.

But I also would be quite happy to sign Vertonghen for 25m. Very good defender still not at his peak.

Isn't he quite injury prone? As if we don't have enough injury prone defenders already. Ability wise I wouldn't mind him here, he is very good at playing the ball out from back, but we already have that with Evans for the left sided defensive role.

Had an injury plagued season but on his day is absolutely top drawer IMO. Would love him at OT

Decent player. Certainly someone Van Gaal would like, but I feel Evans is better. Personally, I feel we need a back up centre back who is similar to Evans - a ball playing defender. In Smalling and Jones, we've already got our no nonsense defenders, in my opinion.

Continuously linked with Barcelona, I would be gutted, if they got him for less than 25M.

Would be much better for us than Vermaelen IMO.

my second choice after hummels. never watched the likes of benatia or mangala so cannot comment much on them.

Would definitely take him for upto 20 - 25 million.

Is at Spurs so Levy would be a nuisance again though.
