Jan Vertonghen

Tottenham or Arsenal will get him. Exactly what they don't need to be spending money on. So they will. Arsenal only buy wingers and center backs and Tottenaham buys a player so long as he isn't a winger, full back or a good striker.
Tottenham will need a new center-back in the summer because i think Gallas, Bassong & Nelsen will leave the club.
Caulker (King's replacement over the next years) should come back next season.

King, Vertonghen, Kaboul, Dawson and Caulker would be very good center-back options for next season.

I personally think 4 center backs is a fine number. No way they'll be playing all 5 of them. They rather need a right winger or a striker, definitely one or two strikers, than they need a center back. With the way Caulker has been playing they need to keep him and give him some game time.
Verthongen wouldn't be an improvement on Kaboul or Dawson imo.

They're needing 5 center-backs with an injury-prone King and young player Caulker.

I think too that Vertonghen would be an improvement.

Walker --- King --- Vertonghen --- Assou-Ekotto would be the 3rd best defence in the league next season imo.

Kabouls better than King now I think, he's been immense this year. Only going to get better as well considering his age.

Any team including United could do with a player of Vertonghen's versatility

Don't Man utd have Ferdinand, Vidic, Smalling, Jones and Evans?

Next season, I would be happy with King, Caulker, Dawson, Kaboul and Vertonghen (I've only seen him a few times, this is based on all the positive reports). King is still liable to pull out a 4/5 game season. Caulker, for all his obvious talent, is still very young. And for the first time, King's knee has become obvious. He's put in an outstanding season but he's had to change the way he defends having lost his physical attributes and, without the midfield protection, he got exposed by Arsenal. Which was sad to see.

I do agree with you that we also need a right winger (someone to challenge Lennon/usurp him, rather than a backup, possibly Townsend will come back as backup for both sides next season) and one or preferably two strikers. It shouldn't be an either/or situation, we should be doing all.

Yes but Smalling and Jones are both English, big talents and they're also used as full back cover because we only have 3 of those. You never know as well with Rio and his back problems if he'll stay good or not.
My point was that he isn't better than what you've got and he wouldn't join to be 3rd or 4th choice.

Jan Vertonghen's agent has reiterated that the defender would love to play in the Premier League and says Tottenham have already made an approach.

Vertonghen's performances for Ajax this season have seem him emerge as one of the most coveted players in European football, with a number of clubs keeping tabs on his progress.

He recently admitted that he had a 'dozen' options and has made no secret of his admiration for Arsenal, where Belgian compatriot Thomas Vermaelen is firmly established as a key man at centre-back.

Newcastle, Manchester City and Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Vertonghen and the 25-year-old's representative, Mustapha Nakhli, says playing in England would be a dream come true.

But it appears Tottenham are among the frontrunners after Nakhli claimed that talks had taken place with the White Hart Lane outfit.

"There is enormous interest. A number of clubs have made concrete approaches, with Tottenham among them," Nakhli said.

"Jan has a few dream clubs. Playing at the top of the Premier League is something he has worked really hard for."

Vertonghen has a year left to run on his Ajax contract and boss Frank de Boer has admitted he is now ready for a move elsewhere after taking his game to a higher level this season.

"Jan has seen the light," said De Boer. "Not only on the pitch, but away from it.

"I have been very critical of him and, at some point, he must have become fond of me.

"His development is wonderful to see. If he leaves, I think it is right.

"Earlier, I thought it would have been unwise.

"It will not be easy to replace him."

Admittedly I haven't seen much of this guy but looks like he'll definitely be leaving Ajax this summer.

Is he someone we should be looking at?

I like him. TYpical Ajax defender, can defend and is good on the ball.

Quite impressed with him when we met Ajax in the EL. Commanding, defends well, very comfortable on the ball for a defender and occasionally gets you a goal, abit like Vermaelen or Ledley King for me if you like. And he'll be available on a cheap, why not get him?

I bet he'll sign for Spurs for like 10M, be a big hit for them and then move on to a bigger club for 25M in 1 or 2 seasons. I really wish we were in for him now when he can be bought relatively cheap. He plays CB for Ajax, but he used to play in CM and I'm sure he'd do a great job for us in either of those positions. Someone mentioned in the matchday thread 'when was the last time we scored from a corner'. Well, with Vertonghen you can expect him to score a few from a corner every season.

Tottenham desperately need a defender like him but I thought Arsenal were interested and they had made an approach as well. Him, Koscielncy, Mertesacker and Vermaelen would be very good options to have.

VoetbalNieuws - 'The future of Jan Vertonghen is still unclear. The Ajax player wouldn't be drawn on his supposed upcoming transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, after the away game against Vitesse (1-3)'.

A lot of clubs should buy him.

He's a perfect player for Barca too.

We shoudl get him. Can never have too many CB. They seem to be the most injury prone of all the positions. Maybe it is their size and last ditch awkward tackling attempts.

Yes, he's on the speculated shortlist for CB for Barça
Because of De Boer's comments :)

IMO Barca should really buy him.

If Fergie thinks Jones' positions are RB and CM then we should buy Vertonghen.

On SSN they're saying that Vertonghen wants to leave Ajax and want them to make a deal with Spurs.

Quotes from Vertonghen (lifted directly from SSN, don't know if they're online anywhere yet):

"The board is asking a fair amount for a player who is only contracted for another year.

"I owe a lot to Ajax but I've always given my heart and soul. My appreciation for the club and fans is great. It would be terrible if my farewell was marred by Ajax sticking to a great price. Of course I want Ajax to gain financially but the amount Tottenham are willing to pay perhaps with a little extra is very reasonable.

"Tottenham is a fantastic football club. Ajax was the perfect club for me but Spurs will be very close in nearing that already. They buy young, eager and offensive minded players."

Belgium have some tremendous footballers. Why aren't they in the Euros i do not know

Curtois, Vermaelen, Verthongen, Kompany, Defour, Witsel, Fellaini, Hazard, Dembele and Lukaku... That's probably a stronger squad than England.

“More and more clubs in England seem to realise that you can go a long way with ‘good football’.

"Arsenal started with it, and teams like Newcastle, Tottenham and Manchester City are playing good football as well now.”

From that Mirror article, apparently we play shit football.
