Jan Vertonghen

He's too good for Spurs. He has far outgrown the Eredivisie, every match is just so easy for him, it's like watching a 16 year old play in an u13 match.

Ajax will be getting far too little for him (10-12 million euro) because, like with Stekelenburg, and some other players (Suarez) We only sell them when they have only one season left on their contract.

He is better on the ball than Vermaelen, and also physically more present.

Vertonghen would be a great signing for any team in Europe, especially at this price.

...

He was bigging us up a few weeks ago so surprising quotes, suppose unlike with us he will get more first team football at Spurs. Still wouldn't mind getting him in though.

He'd be mad to go to Spurs. They will probably get CL spot this season unless Chelsea win the trophy but Chelsea will be back in the league next year and Spurs have feck all chances to overlap any of the current top 3. Also, he won't ever be allowed to move to a better club if they indeed struggle to make CL because we all know Levy.

He'd be a regular starter at Arsenal.

I am surprised he does not want to go to Arsenal and play alongside his compatriot, Vermaelen. They would make a great center back pairing as well with Koscielny and Mertesacker forming the 2nd string defense pairing.

Doubt that. Unless you shift Vermaelen to the left, hard to see him displace his fellow countryman and Koscielny.

Probably wants to join Spurs because he knows he'll have better first team opportunities.

Didn't you say a while ago that Spurs had "no chance" of finishing above Chelsea this season?

And now you claim that next season Spurs will have "feck all chances to overlap any of the current top 3".

Your OTT and wild predictions lack credibility.

And while I'm at it, if Chelsea fail to qualify for next seasons CL why are they bound to be "back in the league next year"? In those circumstamces they'll struggle to attract any really top players - and they have a number of ageing but key players who are past their peak.

Vertonghen to Spurs would be wise move for him: regular football and the chance to play alongside some very good players.

They won't struggle to attract top players because of one failure. Milan and Bayern failed to qualify for CL a few years ago and came back stronger, signing a few top class players on the way.

Be realistic here, United and City are more than 20 points ahead with much better squads, and Arsenal have been better than Spurs and finished higher for each of the last what, 15 seasons?

I said Spurs wouldn't make top 4 this season and they tried their best to prove me right, letting a 10-point gap melt in no time. Thing is Chelsea concentrated on CL thus dropping a lot of points. Still if they win the final they'll take that CL spot away from you unless you can finish above Arsenal and for the first time in ages you actually have a chance of doing so.

Great news for Spurs if true.

Can buy him and another good prospect for the sale of Modric

Why would he move to a club not in the Champions League over one that is? I can only understand a Spurs move if Arsenal aren't actually in for him.

Seems a great move for Spurs with Gallas and King on their way out. Think he'll do brilliant there.

Players clearly don't decide where to move to solely on whether the team is in the Champions League. At Spurs he'll be first choice with Kaboul so will be guaranteed games, at Arsenal Vermaelen is ahead of him and Koscielny has had a brilliant season as well, so he won't break up that partnership. Spurs obviously might have offered him a higher wage, he might have bought into Harry's vision for the club, maybe he thinks Van Persie will leave and Arsenal won't get top 4 next season. There are plenty of reasons. Whether or not the team is in the Champions League is ridiculously simplistic.

It may be that Vertonghen doesn't want to come for whatever reason but he's exactly the kind of squad signing we need - versatile and would push hard for a place.

If he signs I think he'll definitely be one of the signings of the the transfer window.

That's less than what Ajax got for Vermaelen I think? Smart move by Levy and Spurs.

Him and Kaboul will perhaps be the first choice centre back pairing. With Huddlestone returning, they now have options in midfield so it isn't all too doom and gloom for 'Arry.

Yep, plus Dawson returning from injury and Caulker recalled from his successful loan spell at Swansea to both provide CB cover.

Bassong will be sold, and IF Vertonghen signs then I imagine the option to extend the contract with Gallas for an additional year will not be taken up ... partly because he is on top wages.

As for King I'd see him being given a coaching role, perhaps coupled with a pay-as-you-play deal.

Tottenham target Jan Vertonghen says he will sign for Arsenal if they don't hurry up and complete his move from Ajax.

The Belgium international is close to a £9million move to White Hart Lane following talks with chairman Daniel Levy on Monday, but is growing frustrated as the deal drags on.

'I’ve said repeatedly that Tottenham are my first choice, but the talks haven’t progressed,' said Vertonghen.

'They have shown me around, I have met all their key people and their chairman came to meet me on Monday. But Arsenal want me too. They remain a possibility if my Spurs move falls through, as Ajax are asking £12m for me.

'That is a lot of money for someone with just a year left on his contract.

'I’m sure Spurs won’t be able to pay that much after they missed out on the Champions League.

'Ajax want to get as much as they can for me, while Spurs want to pay as little as possible.

'I hope a deal can be done. But I won’t fight with Ajax – that is the last thing I’d want after so many good years with them.

'England is my preferred destination. But if needed I will see out my contract and leave on a free transfer next year.'

What a kick in the teeth that would be if he was to go to the arse.

Those quotes sound odd, not often you hear a player be that specific. It reads like something Neil Custis has written.

Good signing if true. Probably the area of the squad Tottenham could do with strengthening.

Looks like it's all done bar an official announcement.

There are tweets from the dutch GK Stekelenburg (and similar from Ajax fans) wishing him luck at Spurs.

The Belgian media, the Dutch "BBC" (NOS) and several other news sources are all reporting the deal has been done for 9.7m (12m euros)

Well, I'd rather Spurs than City or Liverpool.
Or Chelsea or Arse.

Spurs aren't going to realistically compete with us. And it'll ensure that yet another team stays camped above Liverpool.

Great signing for you. Next target Remy?

Adebayor on a permanent deal would be my guess (with the player accepting a huge cut in wages in return for a hefty signing-on fee).

There also growing rumours/stories that we are in for Sigurdsson, hi-jacking his supposed move to Liverpool ... but who knows.

Seems unlikely - if you offered him an £80K a week deal he'd need £10M to cover his two-year contract loss at City and he'd be tying himself into £80K for the two years after that.

It's not unrealistic to think that perhaps he'd prefer this an alternative to unhappily sitting on the sidelines at City.

If he wants to play football then Spurs would seem to be his only alternative - because no one else is going to pay him what City do.

City don't want him as a player and will want him off their wage bill - so IMO they'll sell him for much less than they paid for him. Spurs do want him and he appears to have been happy playing for us.

I'm not saying he will sign for us permanently, but I do now think it's more likely than not.

:lol: It's Adebayor we are talking about here. Of course it's unrealistic. He's in it for the money BE SURE ABOUT IT.

My guess is Spurs will renew the loan deal for Adebayor. City would prefer to sell him, but they'd find it difficult to give him away on £220k per week. And why should he accept less?
