James Milner

Why? We've Fletcher, Hargreaves, Carrick and Anderson who can all play that role. We'll be far too over-stocked in midfield if we buy a few midfielders this summer.

Carrick has been rubbish for near 12months.

Hargreaves has been injured and shown no real signs of getting over that for near 2 seasons.

Anderson was very poor for most of the games this season, and isn't a defensive midfielder.

Fletcher is the only player in the squad I would trust in that type of role to be selectable and consistent in performances.

can Carrick dictate play?

He can't dictate the tempo.

Scholes can but I never see that from Carrick. He can pass well, though not as good as scholes who has a much better range of passing and he can score now and then though even at 35 scholes can outscore him.

yes he can

Yes he can

I agree on that last bit, Carrick is basically Ray Wilkins in that regard

Hadn't seen this thread before now. Good to see these rumours.

I'd like us to sign Milner. He could play alongside any of our current mids in 442 or 451, or could do a shift on the left wing (more preferable than playing Giggs wide imo). Carrick is too willing to let his midfield partner dictate play. Even when Fletcher is bombing around the pitch Carrick still plays it five yards for Fletcher to spray it out to the winger or play it into the forwards. Milner, Fletcher and Anderson could all share attack and defensive duties. I have a suspicion that Milner would improve his passing game considerably at United - and I'm excited to see Anderson back in the mix. Plus we still have Scholes for next season so a deep playmaker isn't an immediate priority imo. And maybe someone from our youth setup will surprise everyone in the next couple years. There are a couple of candidate for sure.

Inter Milan away and Roma at home spring to mind straight away. It is a shame i can only think of two off the top of my head but still to claim he's never done it is a bit far fetched.

It's not a shame you can only think of two off the top of your head because realistically it probably is just those two games... Everyone remembers Roma but thats about it.

Anderson - Milner - Fletcher

With Hargo's strong presence felt from the bench and ready to be called upon to fill in to 'do a job'.

The more I think about it the less likely it seems we'd buy Milner. Fergie was talking about Gibson being a 12-15 goal a season man if he started more matches. So if anything our goals from midfield are likely going to come from the player the manager likes and already has at the club.

I wouldn't mind us signing him, but City signing him would hilarious. He's good and all but hardly the kind of player that you'd think the billionaire owners would be interested in.

good deal for villa
they can get in 2-3 decent players.. they need a bigger squad

He's very much cut from the same cloth as Barry, Bellamy, Lescott, Bridge etc

Type of signing you'd expect from Mark Hughes but doesn't fit with the Harlem Globe Trotter team they keep mouthing off about building.

Hes a good player but city have a squad full of good players, dont think hes gonna help them raise the bar and I for one am happy enough that we arent buying him if this is true.

It will be a great loss if Milner ends up at City - both for us and Milner

He'd probably improve us in the league but he isn't what we need in Europe. He isn't what City need either. I'd be ecstatic if they saved us from wasting a lot of money on him. In hindsight it's a shame they weren't successful in hijacking the Berbatov deal.

I don't get the hate for this guy. I think he could have a Lampard like influence in the coming decade. He is the sort of player title winning teams need.

I predict that several of those who want Milner nowhere near Old Trafford will eventually end up begging for us to sign him when we're approaching the middle of August having signed no one. This should be fun.

Panic buys are never the answer. I'd rather save the money than beg for us to sign someone who I don't think is good enough. Can't speak for everyone, mind.

I think he is a player who has come on massively this season and will improve any squad in the Premier League - he is also just getting used to a more central role and will only improve in that area

He was nowhere near the England squad a year ago but Capello has fast tracked him ahead of more established players as he can see the promise

He was very good for Villa in central midfield, especially productive in the final third making lots of goals for team mates.

However most of the time I watched Villa they didnt dominate posession in the middle third. And thats in part down to playing a wide midfielder in central midfield.

It may be good enough for Aston Villa, but not for us. Not as Scholes' successor. And we have our box to box midfielders and we have our goalscoring midfielder according to the manager in Gibson. Milner isnt good enough to be our main man in the middle. Good player though he is.

I don't see how he would improve the squad and coming at that fee his presence would probably take matches away from Anderson and Gibson, the former has the talent to be a true world class player. Milner is not needed on the wing either.

He's probably at his level right now - Villa. I agree with other sentiments - let City overpay for his services. United should be going for true quality in midfield. Hamsik for example.

Surely if SAF rated him he'd have bought him from Leeds years ago for a couple million quid.

Under a good manager he could be something special.. if he joins Citeh I fear he'll ruin himself and just end up being a run of the mill sort of player.

We tried to get him from Leeds if I recall. And he'd obviously improve the squad. Our midfield is weak enough right now that he would probably start immediately. He could play in a three or four man midfield, has impressive stamina, gets into the box but can also score from distance, is comfortable on either flank, has a better touch than Fletcher for example, and has most of the passes in his repertoire. He would not demand ludicrous wages, he would probably stay at United (assuming we maintain our competitiveness) for a long time, is unlikely to go on holiday to Brazil without leave or demand moves, and he has a good injury record.

£24m is stupid money for Milner. Good player but not at the price quoted.

I think it's perfectly reasonable in the current climate.

He's British, he's PL proven, his attitude is good and he'll have a good WC.

I'm not sure if I think we should sign him...but I think it's highly likely we will.

We should sign him but any bid we put in is going to be blown out of the water- and not just for him either. If he has a great W/C his price is going to go through the roof.
