Well underrating, overrating, its just a difference of opinion. Some of us think he would improve our squad some of us dont, we'll never know unless it happens. Personally i dont think he would significantly improve our squad but its not up to me!

Fair enough.. but some on here claim he couldn't hack Champions League football.. which for me is just a poor opinion.

He's matured and is ready for that level of football.. whether its with us, well we'll just have to see.

I think he'll be the surprise package at the World Cup.

Unproven...

He;s done very well for England whenever he has featured whereas someone like Ashley Young has looked out of his depth.

But I agree.. on the whole my hypothesis is unproven..which is why we should wait and see whether he makes a big impact at the World Cup.

Again who knows until hes thrown in. Personally I dont doubt he wouldn't be out of his league in that competion but i would expect any player we buy to be able to play in the CL otherwise whats the point? I just dont think he superior enough to what we have to justify paying probably a good chunk of cash for him.

Yep it will be interesting to see how much and how well he plays then.

It's not about merely be able to play in the champions league, it's his pedigree or lack there of against the top teams. He's yet another good English player who's been ridiculously overhyped and has a stupid price tag to go with it. How could a club who's "broke" even think about making a signing like that, especially given that we're full of "good", grafting midfielders already.

I disagree. We may have grafters but we dont have a physical presence in the midfield. We cant overpower opposition midfields which is where I think Milner can do well besides his other skills.

The thing is, where would he play for City? He's been a better player in the middle, but City play Barry and De Jong, defensive players in the middle. You might say thats why they'd be after Milner but if they want to go more offensive they have Ireland.

Bellamy's position has some doubts with his bust ups with Mancini, so perhaps he'd go play left wing or play on the right with Johnson left wing. But left wing isnt his best position (milner) and they are looking at Di Maria for that spot. Most likely Milner is hardly the best option.

You have to have genuine class with presence to overpower the opposition, liek Essien. Milner just doesn't have the class to go with the presence. Fletcher's done a very good job of keeping the oppostion quiet over the last few years.

He's no more powerful than Anderson and Fletcher.

People said the same thing about Fletcher. Infact one look at him some years ago and the majority of the people couldnt have fathomed fletcher bullying opposition midfielders. But he does now, so much so that he's come to be our most important central midfielder for the last couple of seasons.
Thats where milner's versatility kicks in. He can play across the midfield and depending upon the tactics we can use him anywhere.

But then his price could easily double, hence the early move for the Mexican dude.

Just a above average player.

We should be looking at World class players now.

We already have players like Milner.

Second time I say it, if we sign this guy, it will be Valencia all over again. "No United quality, overrated, what's he doing here?" one day, and "Oh god he's da real deal! Always trust SAF!" the next.

To be honest you NEVER know how the transfer will pan out. Nothing wrong with having low expectations , even better when it clicks.

Lampard was already a very good player at 24 and has improved season on season, arguably more than any player, I doubt Milner can match that.

I believe Milner can be turned into a player as effective as Lampard. Under the right manager.

You think Milner honestly will score 20 goals every season and be one of the first names on the team sheet at a top club, I seriously doubt that will ever happen even if he improves a lot. Lampard is criminally underrated on here, he has I think since 2000 the most assists in EPL, third most goals, and most games played; there is no way in feck that Milner will put those stats up in a ten year period, save for maybe and maybe the games things, but I can guarantee he won't do that if he comes to United.

I really don't think he's worth £20-25m, and I don't see him as the kind of player who can have a big influence and dominate big games for us. Which is what we lack in midfield.

I think one of the main reasons many are disappointed in the idea of Milner coming in is because he adds to a list of "Puts a good shift in" style midfielders we already have, most were hoping for some flair and charisma to be added to our solid midfield.

Did you think that Antonio Valencia was worth £17-£18 million last summer? Milner is a far far better player than the Valencia that was playing for Wigan last season so £20 million(ish) sounds about right to me.

Valencia has stepped up and surprised a lot of people this year (me included), who's to say that Milner won't have the same affect if he does join us?

Before Ranieri arrived at Chelsea, Lampard was pretty much the same type of player Milner is as a CM with better goal returns. A few years with Claudio then Jose took him up several levels.

Milner has both the engine, posses a good football brain, the shooting ability and he can pass a ball well. I see no reason why in a better team, and under a better manager, he can't be turned into a Lampard like player. Let's not forget this season was his first ever in central midfield. He is young enough to step up some levels.

Lampard is criminally underrated on here,
Not by me,. I'm one of Lampard's biggest fans. I also remember what he was like before Ranieri and then Jose turned him into a superb player. I also know that unlike Milner, Lampard has been a central midfielder all his life. So Milner is unlikely to ever match his EPL record. Unless he morphed into Bobby Charlton over night.

But on thing he can do is emulate it, if given the right plat form. He is a better player than most people on here realise.

I don't think Milner is a bad player, I actually like him and think he's a very useful player. But for £20-25m, don't you think we should be going for a higher class of player? Someone who is an international starter, has Champions League experience and has the potential of being world class (if not there already)? I don't think Milner would be enough of an improvement on what we already have for that sort of money, if we didn't have Park, Valencia, or maybe one or two of our central midfielders - then he would be a very useful player to have and I'd be glad to have him.

However, looking at our squad, we need less of a good, utility man type of midfielder who can play a few attacking-ish positions in midfield and more of a specialist central attacking/creative midfielder in my opinion. I'd rather not spend that sort of money on Milner just for the sake of it. Again though, I do think he's a good player and can still get better.

Well I'm not entirely convinced he is worth £18m now.

My point mate was that if Wigan valued a virtually unknown Valencia in that bracket then paying £20 million for Milner (a player extreemly highly rated within the England camp) is surely not that unreasonable.

I'd personally rather see us targeting and aquiring world class players this summer. 2 top quality central midfielders (1 holding 1 creative/attacking) and a goalscoring centre forward is what we need IMO. It won't happen though. SAF seems obsessed with buying young up and coming talent only.

Milner is definately one to watch though and has the potential to add the goals that our midfield Currently lacks.

Our midfield lacks creativity more than it lack goals.

I'm going to make a prediction and say that this thread will be over 100 pages long before the end of August.

I'm going to make the prediction that we will sign Milner

I'm going to make another prediction:

He will be prove to be an excellent signing and a fans favourite for the next five years!

If you can't see Milner is the sort of player United will always want you are a muppet.

He will be a servant of the club for years, but then games like yesterday and today will pop up, and people will question why did we not go for Sneijder or Robben....It is fair to ask that we go for another player now, why not Milner is not a world beater at the moment, and as someone said earlier he will be a Lampardeque player, I really doubt it. With all that said, I wont be too disappointed if United, and I think that he will prove himself to be a pretty good signing, however there are better players out there and that is evident to me and many others.

if we're gonna spend 30 million quid on the yorkshire bastard, why didn't we get him for peanuts when he was at leeds? did we not rate him then?

You could say the same about Carrick, Ferdinand, Berbatov... More or less, every player we have signed over the age of 22

We did go for Robben and he chose the Renties

Probably the same reason we didn't go for Rio and Carrick when they were signed by Leeds and Spurs for considerably less than what we paid.
