James McCarthy

Some of you need to lighten up a bit. As others have said it's only May and there's ample time to make more signings along with McCarthy (if this story proves to be true). Why people are jumping to conclusions like McCarthy being our only signing is beyond me.

Anyway, even with the same squad we have now we should improve massively under Van Gaal's leadership rather than Moyes'. Not saying we shouldn't make any signings but last season was a once off experiment gone wrong as far as I'm concerned. Our squad is not that bad.

Yes, it is only May but I thought the general feeling was that the club wanted to have at least 2/3 players in before the start of the World Cup which is only 3 weeks away. IF we don't bring anyone in before then expect the same old "no value" rubbish after the WC when clubs add 10/15m on original price because of a half decent world cup.

That doesn't matter one bit, he's still shite and needs getting rid of.
what ever you think of him,(and i personly think he an okay squad player) you can't sell the only mobile center midfeilder we have and replace him with a none mobile one, mobility and pace where two of our biggest weakness last season, reducing that further would be folly!

I'm sure we will get someone in who's equally as mobile, and considerably better at football than him. He's nowhere near good enough to be near our first team.

People saying he's only alright and would be back up are talking nonsense. Compared to what we have he's a massive step up in quality. There's some of our fans stuck in a football manager game day dream that seem to feel a sense of entitlement to us having the best players in the world, get real, we're not Real Madrid signing Galacticos, a young, hungry player with great quality like McCarthy is exactly the type of player our success has always been based on.

I agree, but, we were promised huge signings by Woody himself. We are miles behind the top of the EPL and top teams in Europe, for that reason world class players are needed.

well he is currently the bes second midfeilder we have, iand the only CM we have with much moblity, so unless we buy two Cm's with mobility i wouldn't let him go any where.

if we do get that and we get a decent offer for him then fine, but in no way would i exchange McCarthy for cleverly, the upgrade is't massive an easliy off set by the further reduction of moblity in our CM.

The ironic thing being that iirc it was our signing Fellaini that triggered his move to Everton. So if we hadn't got Fellaini, we presumably could have signed McCarthy ourselves, for less than half the price!:wenger:

Would be all on for this signing, but Everton would probably want ridiculous money, egged on by our clowning about with the Fellaini fee last Summer.

What are you on about? McCarthy is just as mobile as Cleverley and has a far better engine on him.

A) McCarthy would have been a excellent signing last year when he was going for 15m. As it is we'd be getting him for a massive fee a year later, which does highlight the stupidity of our transfer policy somewhat.
B) Saying "we're not going to spend like Madrid" is fine, except that's exactly what the club have said we would be doing for the last six months. People will rightly be pissed off if we follow up all that talk with another underwhelming summer.
C) Bottom line: good player though he is, McCarthy won't make that much of a difference to us on his own. We need better than him too. Yet potential top class signings are looking thin on the ground atm so it's hard to see how we're going to strengthen in the way we need...

Sigh, it almost depresses me to see us linked with players like McCarthy and Strootman now, players who we could've easily obtained before for a fraction of the price. What the f*ck were our previous managers smoking when it comes to our midfield

Yup. It's so stupid.

Everton will fleece us.

Everton won't sell to us without us going to some stupid price. But he's an excellent player and one who would improve us massively. Different player to Carrick but I think he'd end up replacing him.

The problem with the whole 2/3 players before the world cup thing is that the world cup has already started for most players we are interested in. They are with their squads training now. They probably do training, have meetings until about 3pm then have winding down sessions until 6/7 by which a quick email or phone call by their agent will notify them of offers, most of their replies I imagine would be "Im pretty exhausted and busy, well discuss this after the world cup". The only way I could see it being any different is if we had deals agreed on a week or so earlier than now and its a matter of finishing up the contracts, even so, most players are away with national sides leaving it to their days off and whichever ones can catch a flight to Manchester over the weekend.

I believe we will only see major movements over the weekends leading up to the world cup of which there are three. Seriously, if I am honest, I only see Shaw being announced before the cup. I seriously doubt well sign anyone else before and well be rushing around like headless chickens and end up with some semi-decent squad players from Holland who will over-achieve but essentially be below the cut of player we need to compete again.

There is a common theme occuring here and is starts and ends with Woodward.

The annoying thing is that as the season went on I kept thinking I wish we'd sign McCarthy but the idea seemed too ridiculous. It'd be embarrassing for Woodward to go asking for McCarthy considering what happened with Fellaini, the extortionate price we paid for him and the fact they signed McCarthy for so little as his replacement.

But here we are, and all things considered I still want us to sign him. It's just that we'll have gone about doing it in such a ridiculous fashion.

Hes another tom cleverly/fellani. He can do it for everton, but the pressure and expectations of united would be too big for him

feck James McCarthy! One tiny goal in 34 games for Everton, a team that is supposedly playing attractive football, is not what I call United quality.

McCarthy would have been a good signing for us last season for the £13m Everton paid Wigan for his services. We would be looking at paying potentially double to get his services now and he isn't good enough to warrant that sort of fee.

It is similar with Strootman, £14m to Roma last season. Most likely double to sign him now.

If Kroos is available for £20m, it would be a no brainer.

Oh, and McCarthy is absolute quality and anyone who thinks otherwise is dumb. Our best player along with Coleman this year.

Ridiculous assessment of his season. McCarthy and Barry played a huge role in allowing Everton to play their attacking football and their work rate and covering allowed Baines, Barkley and in particular Coleman to take the plaudits. You can't have 2 full backs overlapping without disciplined centre mid players.

He bossed the games against us this season and even at Wigan he was very mature for his age.

This "Kroos was ours for the asking, and for just £20m" bullshit is going to kill the muppets this summer! Every transfer will be compared to this fantasy.

Hence why I said "IF" he was available for £20m. I genuinely expected him to remain with Bayern and sign a new deal when we first got linked in the press. It seems more unrealistic we will sign him now as he himself has said he will be at Bayern next season.

How many goals does Carrick score a year? Even at his peak 4 is the most he's ever managed in the league.

I guarantee you that he will not leave.
and that will be because United will not pay what Everton want. Not because of your fantasy that all Everton players love their club above all others.

We've gone from scouting Vidal, Carvalho, to Kroos and now we are definitely scrapping the barrel by going for McCarthy.

One of the best midfielder in the league last season and still only 23 years old. His red card arguably handed the title to City. Would take him in a heart-beat.
Funny how so many laughed at the Henderson deal at the time and bathed in the glory of Cleverley and our "greatest player ever" Jones.

At his peak, Kroos scored 9. Kevin Strootman scored 6 in 28 appearances for Roma and had a career-high (so far) with 8 goals the year before that.

Seriously, how long have we spent time saying that we need goals from midfield? Because you play deep in midfield, it doesn't mean you can't bag a good number in the process.

I never stated that anyway nor have that fantasy. The irony in that statement is that many United fans think everyone will and would join them. There are a few reasons that he wouldn't leave.

1. He and Martinez have a great relationship and he's believed in him throughout his career and brought him to England/Wigan and now has taken him to Everyon.
2) We have a great set-up and mix of Irish/English/Scottish players. I think that matters quite a bit to home grown players to have that bond through the side.
3) Barkley, Stones, and McCarthy are 3 fantastic young players that we can build our side around (so the club will be adamant not to sell unless it's big, and we don't let our best players go for little) and we will be offering bumper contracts throughout their careers so they're getting what they're worthy of.
4) We have European football to offer at the present time which he will relish at getting the opportunity to perform in, and as long as we can sustain or improve and stay in Europe he'll have reason to stay.
