James McCarthy

feck, I read the tweet from SkySports and read Manchester City, thinking why the hell do they want him?

From Kroos and Fabregase to James McCarthy, it's just a little underwhelming.

I'd put McCarthey in the same level as Kroos and Fabregas.. He has managed to out perform most of the midfielders in the premiership this season in a team half as good as the top teams. If he were playing for Barca people would hail him as one of the best box to box midfielders on the planet.

underwhelmed by this news if its true!!

Decent player and hard worker, but come on we've plenty of those already!! If we're going for any Everton Midfielder it should be Barkely!!

One day Kroos the next McCarthy!!

People have been sectioned for less than that!

Not sure if this is a serious post?

If you're expecting Fabregas/Kroos/Xavi this window then there's a good chance you're going to be let down.

How many of the current world's best midfielders moved from one big club to another? Fabregas and that's it? And it was under differing circumstances. It's about buying talented midfielders from other clubs and them establishing themselves like Vidal/Gundogan/Martinez/Modric were. I don't think James McCarthy is ideal but people are really going to be disappointed this window and it probably won't even be justified

I doubt we're the ones who said no.
I'm sure if we wanted him we could've easily have got him. I'm not buying into this £200m transfer kitty anyway. We've gone for LVG as he'll get more out of the current players and will promote a few youth players and it's made known he doesn't like buying players, ideal man for the Glazers.

From Kroos and Fabregas yesterday, to McCarthy today...

He's probably a more realistic target than the other two, but so very underwhelming.

I would take McCarthy if I'm honest. I said we should have signed him last summer but we signed Fellaini.

McCarthy along would not be enough though. We would need to sign a top creative central midfielder to fit alongside him such as Fabregas or Rakitic. I'm not fixated on big names such as others but players I just believe will improve our squad. If we could get McCarthy + Fabregas for example. I would fancy our chances next season.

McCarthy would more than likely be replacing Carrick not replacing Kroos or Fabregas as transfer targets in my opinion.

Well, you know more than the rest of us then. We've no idea about Kroos, although he did just say he wasn't interested in coming here which is more concrete than anything else we've seen.

I don't believe a single thing that has been written in the papers. I highly doubt LVG has much of a clue who McCarthy is anyway. Plus Everton will charge huge money.

I think he's great. I thought he should have been a United target back at Wigan. But then he had a very underwhelming game against United for Wigan and I was not so sure.
But he's done well at Everton.

I'd be in favour of United getting him, but the thought of how much Everton would drag out of us for him puts me off a bit.

LvG: 'I don't want Kroos, Fabregas, Vidal. I want...Mccarthy. Or i don't sign contract Mr Wood. It's ok if i call you Wood from now on jaaaa'.

Seems legit.

Eh? Where are your reports exactly? You really believe he'd pick Roma over us if we were in for him last summer?

Regarding Strootman, I wasn't even talking about Fergie, clearly.

Apparently we were after him pre euro 2012

There are loads of other places where the reports were being touted at the time.. You are probably one of those United fans that finds it hard to believe that some players didn't want to work with Ferguson / play for United, but it happens from time to time..

Yeah but he could be just saying that to save face because we've all of a sudden cooled our interest. It happened with Fabregas last summer, everyone was tweeting saying he was interested in a move, then when it didn't materialise he was all happy as Larry at Barca and didn't wanna move to United. I blame Twitter, it allows anyone to make a rumour and people will believe it.

Surprised the reactions aren't more negative. I think he's a decent player but do people really think this is the kind of signing that will take us back to the top? It's very Liverpool esque. Let's not forget Fellaini looked very good at Everton.

We need 2 or 3 midfielders. Are you really expecting Fabregas/Kroos?

As a replacement for someone like Cleverley or Fellaini he'd be excellent. He can certainly end up being as good as Carrick was at his best, for example.

He's not going to make much difference to us on his own though, plus I hate to think how much he gonna cost us. This is particularly irritating as so many of us were pointing out what a bargain he'd be last year.

A lot of posters on the forum are talking about the three or four signings that'll get us winning the league again next season. McCarthy isn't one of them. He's a signing that would compliment whoever else we have in midfield but we really couldn't depend on him to be the main man.

He's looked good at Everton, Wigan and Hamilton. Supposedly Barca were sniffing around when he was playing in Scotland. He's very talented.

So long as he's not our only signing I'd be delighted to get him.

Are you inept or something? How is saying "Fergie didn't bid for him" comparable to that exactly? I've seen plenty of cases where players haven't been interested in joining us under Fergie and I don't deny it in any way, don't put words into my mouth.

Also, mirror and some site called football.co.uk, irrefutable evidence if I've ever seen it isn't it? Two incredibly reliable sources there. Besides, it's last summer that he moved, so clearly I wasn't on about Fergie, I was on about Moyes.

Possibly, though again, the opposite could've happened, we said we were no longer interested to cover up the fact that the player didn't want to come here. We've no idea, really.

He's a very good midfielder. I wanted us to sign him last summer to be honest. But signing him alone wouldn't be enough, we would still need a top creative central midfielder.

Fellaini looked good for Everton in a very different role and I did not want Fellaini last summer as he wasn't good enough and it's proved true. McCarthy is very much a totally different footballer. Very good passer, tactically excellent. I would assume he would come in to replace Carrick while we go after a creative centre mid.

I know he isn't a big name but that doesn't matter to me. I see his qualities.

We won't get three. It's two at the most. I'm expecting us to go for players who belong at top clubs. It's May, after all, we could at least try. Why shouldn't we be able to sign Fabregas?

There's also the factor that his price will have doubled since last summer. I don't see us getting him for anything below 20 million. That's too much in my opinion. If we had signed him last summer for the price Everton paid, then fine. But as usual our scouts are a few years behind the rest of the world.

He's at his boyhood club currently - very good friends with Messi and co.
Arsenal would be massively attractive if he was to leave - people are underestimating them.
There will probably be a number of other clubs interested.

Yes it's a possibility but IMO very unlikely and a risk, something which we can't afford much more of.

How many top midfielders actually make the move from one big club to another? Very few. Other than the players who've been brought through an academy or signed as a youth product - nearly every top midfielder at a top club has been signed from another smaller club - Vidal/Gundogan/Martinez/Modric. Unfortunately Moyes' lack of belief in spotting talent has left us with a very restrictive view of who is deemed good enough.

Not saying we should sign him but if we were he would be a good addition. Also, it wouldn't be a scouting problem. It comes down to the manager. Don't think you need a scout to watch players already playing in the league.

It reminds of me a lot of the Carrick transfer, but McCarthy would cost a lot more. Not sure if he would be worth the fee we would pay for him.

Most people were underwhelmed by the Carrick transfer, and he turned out to be the catalyst.

LvG probably doesn't even know who McCarthy is, more chance of us signing Strootman than him

Oh lord. Decent player but not someone who will bring us forward much at all. Underwhelming news if true

Yes I must be inept because I cant see the post where you said that.. I am responding to exactly what you said, not putting words in your mouth, re read your posts

I could have guessed you'd say that.. something tells me the only thing that you'd count as evidence is a phone call from Ferguson himself telling you that he was interested in signing him.

I like James McCarthy. He's a good player. I cannot understand why we weren't in for him last Summer. He's Irish, well he plays for us, and us Irish don't have too many players to support.

However, if we were going to sign him, which I don't think we will, he would not be enough. He is better than anything we have, but at the type of money we would have to pay, that would have to be the case.

McCarthy + another could be good if we get the right player. McCarthy + Vidal or McCarthy + Fabregas would be excellent in my opinion. However I highly doubt we would get either of them two. I do think that LVG will move for Strootman though. He clearly loves him. Would McCarthy + Strootman be that good together? Both are good box to box players, but neither are that creative and neither score too many goals. We severely lack someone that can do that in midfield. What did our midfielders get in terms of goals and assists last season? I think Cleverley got one. None of Anderson, Fletcher, Carrick nor Fellaini scored to my recollection. Giggs didn't even score. Maybe Clev got two. Regardless, it was a shocking return. I don't know the assists but I'm pretty sure it is below double figures anyway.

Anyway, as I believe we will make a big play for Strootman, I don't think McCarthy would be the right partner. I don't think we'll go for him anyway. Although I think he is a good player who would certainly improve us.

Graham Hunter, one journalist who I actually like and respect, claims Schweinsteiger is available if we want him.

He could be a reliable midfield option for 7 years at least. He's only 23 and he continues to improve every year. We need more signings though, he won't be enough on his own that's for sure.
