James Garner (out)

I wanted him to at least be given an actual chance considering he's impressed out on loan and we have our midfield shortcomings

surely he must be better than VDB, who is quite possibly one of the worst midfielders we have ever had, get rid of him first.

According to Luckhurst it's £8m potentially rising to £15m with a sell on clause, no mention of a buy back clause.

They're not the same player and McTomminay won't fetch anywhere near £30m

True but if Liverpool were selling him he would be.

I think if the interest from Newcastle was genuine we could have got more than £20m for McT

But we didn't because we're obsessed about home grown academy players even when they're proven failures. I'd rather sell a player who hasn't made the grade for £15m than one who has barely even had a sub appearance.

I wouldn't be surprised if the buy back clause is just there to appease fans.

It seems they're letting (fear of) fans dictate their actions a lot more these days and they have their finger on the pulse ever since the super league fiasco.

What?

Amazingly poor if true. 15+ addons sounds more like a fair valuation to me.

Perhaps it's payback for them taking Sneiderlein (my brain has erased any possibility of spelling that right) off us for that daft fee.

Pereria £10m
Bailly - loan (loan fee) with buy obligation £5m
Chong - Birmingham (not finalised yet, negotiations ongoing for sale)
Garner - £15m

That would be it for transfers, we also have Henderson, Pellistri and Amad out on loan or going, which we received a fee for.
We sold Dylan Levitt for between £300-500k as well.

Selling him for only 8m initially would be bad business when he still has 3 years on his contract.

Never really rated him tbh, does seem surprising that he has never really been given a proper shot at making it as a squaddie but if ETH doesn't rate him based on what he has seen in training (and I never thought much of him anyway) there must be some genuine limitations in his game which prevent him from being an elite mid.

We also used to be able to sell talents / deadweight above market value when we were doing well as a club back in the day. When your club is doing well it's easier to give the impression that your second rate players are still great.

How buy-back clause exactly works, we can buy him back only if they decide to sell or we can repurchase whenever we want?

Garner was injured and missed some of the tour. Im wondering if he has still not been able to show ETH his best.

It is a real shame that he has not been given a shot in the league. It is not like we are flush with talent in midfield.

Or maybe Garner just wanted a guarantee at starting each week.

He may well end up being another Zaha, Pique or Memphis. Either way, i hope he does well.

Disgusting. We have one other CDM in casemiro who is 30. Insane

Garner is not a CDM, although it's a shame not to have seen him have a run out after the last couple of seasons at Forest.

That said, this wouldn't be happening without ETH's blessing so happy to back it especially if there's a reasonable buy-back option included.

This is normal business. Youth players at utd almost never make it to the first team. So interested clubs see Garner as a failed player and thus don't go over the odds for buying him. Utd on the other hand wants to get rid because they just bought an 80 million midfielder so they take whatever they can get.
I wouldn't bother about a buy back clause, garner is most likely just not good enough.
The youth setup for Man Utd or other huge teams is a bit redundant and unnecessary imo.

Decent deal for all involved. Maybe could've pushed the fee slightly higher but with a sell-on/buy-back it's not too much of a problem.

Garner £15, AWB £15 and all of a sudden there's a bit more freed up in the economic equation that leads to FDJ, lever-free.

We can sell McTomminay whenever, he’s proven he can play in the PL, maybe not at this level but he can do it. He’s only in our team because he’s over 6ft and is willing to scrap, people don’t like it but we’re soft in the middle and short on corners without him. He’ll get less game time now Casemiro is here anyway but he can still play a part.

Garner is behind too many players to get a game and it’s too big of a risk to throw him in and see how it goes.

We're actually improving in the market for the last two summers. Might have had a few hiccups this summer, but in the end we got most of our targets.

Buy back clause and all. Look at us. Being all savvy and the like.

Good deal, considering how late in the transfer window it is, we probably could and should, have got more, but the manager has seen him and doesn't seem to rate him at this point. Buy back clause is smart. good luck to the lad

Depends what the sell on clause is. He's decent, but people are kidding themselves if they thought we were getting 25m considering the options on the market.

It would have to be 50% for it to be any sort of value for us.

Everton got a great deal.

Might as well have kept him if we're only getting 8m guaranteed.

I understand he’s been more of a box to box but surely he has played there - hasn’t he?

the buyback makes me happy but in reality Everton is a sinking ship at the moment, no real promise and it’s not a project like Southampton where we figure Garner could do well. Or honestly a west ham where he could play next to Rice albeit a small role. I’m more concerned about him although our lack of defensive midfielders is an issue. Fred and McTominay have been proven to not have those attributes
