James Garner (out)

I feel he's a better prospect than neco Williams who went for more, and I know how much he's adored by forest fans and their manager. I guess we'll never know now.
It does say around £15-20m so no reason it couldn’t match or slightly exceed that fee (although I would agree he’s shown more than Williams)

£15m for Garner is about right I feel in the grand scheme of current transfers. He's not Premier League proven, he's a young talent who has shown in bits what he can do with Forest.

I'd rather let them have a lower fee but with a buy back or % sell on clause

I'll be very annoyed if we do not include buy back option or something in this deal, if we do that it makes sense as he can adjust to Premier League and we can see if he kicks on from a good championship season

otherwise I'd rather he stay here, can't be much worse than Mctominay for example and if Casemiro get's injured (god forbid) we have the same midfield as last season which is obviously not good enough

Should have given him a new contract on 75k a week and kept him on the bench for another 4 years to make absolutely sure he's not good enough to stay and then let him go on a free transfer.

Yeah, thats the only one right?

So this will be our second... which is mad considering how many players we've actually got rid of already, and how many players we still need to get rid of... though at the same time, it's also not overly surprising with how we opearte.
Reflection of how we give/renew contracts and holding on to too many players for too long.

Hopefully starting to change and while annoying some of the released players didn’t get sold earlier for a fee, saves a lot in wages and thins the squad… long overdue

Levitt too but that was for pretty much feck all

I can’t say I’m not disappointed that he hasn’t been given the same opportunity and patience as is McT has been afforded.

However, Garner will never be good enough to be first choice under ETH anyway. We have some younger midfielders coming through who seem to have higher ceilings than Garner, too.

I wish him all the best, and hope he does well at Everton.

Finally, McT shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same breath as Fletcher.

Seems desperately stupid to flog Garner for £15m when McTominay might fetch double that.

One has had too many chances, the other no chances. One has potential, the other has none. Both count as home grown.

McTominay gets four seasons to prove over and over he’s not up to it and Garner gets not one minute. A bit of a cliche but it must be true in this case that he’s shit in training.

 no chance.

That’s the thing we’d be keeping him to possibly play some cup games.

It’s not fair on him to loan him out again and he’s definitely not starting over Casemiro anytime soon so he would inevitably stagnate and lower his fee.

While it’s bitter sweet it’s the best outcome for all involved to get a good sum for an academy player who I have no doubts will be a good PL player but in all likelihood isn’t going to be a starter for us.
His challenge would’ve been to take Eriksen, McTominay or Fred’s spot next to or in front of Casemiro and be used as the deeper ball receiver and distributor. He doesn’t have the prerequisite athleticism, which means he’d have to be absolutely outstanding and better than Eriksen outright to take over his role, or a better haranguer of the opposition to take over from Mc or Fred. You’re right, though; all those avenues lead to stagnation and a serious lack of playing time, so he had to leave for his own good.

I don’t like the idea of him going to a Lampard-managed team, but hopefully Everton as a club want him so he’s not cast aside when Lampard is invariably sacked in a few weeks.

Will be interesting to see how he copes with the PL.

Very good, so we offset 15m of gross spent while keeping a buy back option, should Garner develop into Ruud Gullit in the future.

Have we only sold one player for cash so far?
Pereria £10m
Bailly - loan (loan fee) with buy obligation £5m
Chong - Birmingham (not finalised yet, negotiations ongoing for sale)
Garner - £15m

That would be it for transfers, we also have Henderson, Pellistri and Amad out on loan or going, which we received a fee for.

They're not the same player and McTomminay won't fetch anywhere near £30m

It’s a shame. We should have loaned him to Everton for a season. The 8m rising to 15m doesn’t do much for us. We may need to buy backup midfields at some point who will cost 40-50m in today’s market

Our loans rarely do well, just look at van de beek and williams. It's a fair fee for a player unproven in the PL, and we cover ourselves with the buy back.

I wouldn't be surprised if the buy back clause is just there to appease fans.

It seems they're letting (fear of) fans dictate their actions a lot more these days and they have their finger on the pulse ever since the super league fiasco.

So we’ve lost Matic, Mata, Cavani, Lingard and Garner for a total incoming of £15 million.
Yes and we're led to believe we had a clear out and got rid of "toxic" elements All we're highly convenient/easy to let go.

Good sale, nice to have a buy back. I only have faith in Hansen, Mainoo or Gore making it here though. Don't think the other midfielders are good enough.

No shame in that.

It's there because Everton are getting him for a good price. Everyone is happy.

Hannibal has been loaned to Birmingham as well.

Levitt went for a fee too, albeit a small one. Probably not much less than what Chong will go for mind.

A bit harsh - I think everyone is broadly in agreement that a buy-back would be a good fail-safe to put into this transfer, so no reason why the club wouldn't share that opinion - especially as this isn't the type of transfer we usually do.
