It’s not ability it’s mentality. He plays like a youth player still.

Terrible. I'm shocked at how bad he has been on average. He can't seem to beat a man and makes too many bad decisions. Some of his passing was awful today. I thought he was going to be a safe bet, and he's been failing massively. We've spent a lot of money on him and getting little to nothing back. This is a huge worry. Rashford was actually better than him today.

He got the benefit of the doubt last season. He must start to show something.

They know when the player isn't worth the value asked for him. They know Sanchez and Maguire weren't worth the price tag for them. They weren't willing to spend such sum of money on them. They were right. What you're talking about is different.
On those two it does seem they missed a bullet, but they might have bought them if not for us, as well.

He's one of the dross.

He's shown absolutely nothing to be absolved of being grouped with the other dross in the team.

Unlike the other dross he has had amazing seasons. Can't say the same for the rest.

I refuse to believe this is the same Sancho from Dortmund. I don't get what happened.

Is he truly just a "system player" that excelled in Dortmund's system? Is the Bundesliga even worse than I thought?

Hard to disagree with that sentence.

All I know is that Dortmund seem to score a huge number of goals of a type that you very rarely see in the PL. We've bought Kagawa, Mkhitaryan and now Sancho; all on the assumption that they can get those goals + assists in the PL. The first two didn't work.

It seems like a fundamental misunderstanding of where the space is in different leagues and the impact this has on the skill-set required to hurt defences.
Yep, just don’t see many goals scored similar to the ones Sancho used to be involved in in the Bundesliga.

I’m beginning to wonder if getting Dembele as the alternative in 2020 would not have been a bad idea? I was one of the ones who was disgusted at the thought. :nervous:

He doesn’t look fit enough and doesn’t seem to have any idea what to do when he gets the ball. Im so disappointed in him. He contributes next to nothing.

Will have left United in a season or two I imagine.

Never got a great vibe from him, just another lad who was born with the good fortunate of being talented at football but without any clear passion for the game, much like Shaw, Martial or Pogba.

Very impressive how consistently we’ve had highly rated talents look absolute shit for us.

Complete nothing of a player. Forgot he was on the pitch until I noticed him in the second half.

He's not going to make it in the PL. Way too slow and soft

Greenwood shits all over Sancho in footballing ability

*sigh*

I don't know how often I have to repeat this, but Dortmund had a lot of issues in recent years and was far from continuously having a great system that makes players look better than they are. On the contrary he dragged a tumbling side to a cup win in his last season and stood out during this run.

Calling Sancho a system player is just a lazy excuse for deeper individual reasons that surely have to exist, otherwise his performances for United just don't make sense, I agree that he doesn't look the same as in Dortmund.

Reminds me so much of Memphis. Technically sound, shows flashes of talent, excelled in a weaker league…comes to the PL and just can’t hack it. He seriously can’t beat a defender for love nor money. Just doesn’t have the pace, power or acceleration. His only move is to face up the defender, try a few skills, realise he can’t get past him, pass backwards and start again. Rinse and repeat every single time. He clearly doesn’t have the skill set to play as a traditional winger who’s going to be regularly beating fullbacks. Only way he’s going to be successful is if he’s played as a roaming playmaker ala Silva/Foden etc He’s going to have to rely on clever movement and passing to get in behind. Neither of which he’s shown much of himself. One fantastic pass last weekend aside. Basically what anyone who watched him regularly in the Bundesliga said, he’s a system player who needs a good set up to thrive. Would probably be quite good at City.

He’s clearly got ability it’s mentality. He’s not got it in him to win matches on his own.

If he’d went somewhere like City or Liverpool where they were flying, he’d look class.

There were 2 English wingers signed from Bundesliga to Premier League last season.

1st winger costed 72M and is on 350k/week. Since joining he has played 31 Premier League matches and scored 3 goals and provided 3 assists.
2nd winger costed 1.7M and is on 45k/week. Since joining he has played 34 Premier League matches and scored 5 goals and provided 4 assists.

It's not terrible but Dortmund score an unnatural amount. In 18/19 or 19/18 (forget which) for example Villa scored 50 PL goals, and Dortmund scored 90 goals, in four fewer games.

If you watch Sancho's Bundesliga goals in his final season, a lot of them he was free in space with no one near him. It's easy to see that that wouldn't translate to the PL.

I'm not surprised in the slightest with what we're seeing. I watched him more than most and what he had was good passing, a good touch, decent finish. But he never had pace and his dribbling struggled to beat a man.

I think Dembele would've been a great pick up. Fast, excellent with both feet, can pick a pass and finish. He has that explosiveness that Sancho does not. I wanted Mahrez at United for the RW but I think Dembele could be even better for us.

We probably could've got him this season too on a free if we offered a larger wage than Barca did. SAF would've been all over him, exactly the type of wise player he loved. It's funny we've gone from fast Nani type players to slow Mikhi style playmakers out wide since SAF left.

He just isn’t fast enough. That’s the killer.

Flat track bully, fair weather player, tomato can crusher, whatever other sporting cliche you can consider. Not just at Utd either, the guy has been an also ran at international level as well, blame it on Southgate but when the high point of your England career is getting some some 43 yo Faroe Islands semi-pro to do his hamstring in a second string run out there are issues.

I want to see some fight, drive and personality from him, a bit of spite in his game as well, at the moment his head seems to go down with all the rest.

Showed fight and grit at Dortmund. Haven't seen too much of it here as yet.

Yup, I reckon Giggs in his last seasons was quicker.
All the people saying it’s mentality etc are just kidding themselves, he’s never going to be great in this league unfortunately.

That's a problem, but he doesn't even have the ability to get past a man. You don't need blistering pace to dribble past people. He can't do it consistently(or at all) vs packed defenses.

He's been a complete bust so far.

I wouldn’t say I witnessed him show “fight” at Dortmund in the sense that he had the level of aggression and intensity that’s required in the premier league. There’s a few moments today where he either lost the ball or was trying to “press” a defender with absolutely no intensity. If it was Salah, Diaz, Foden, Bernardo they would have been all over the player like a rash. Really in their face and force an error out of them.

It gets unnoticed how very little our forwards win the ball back for the team. We are terrible at winning the ball high up and forcing a turnover. This naturally leads to our defence and midfield constantly being exposed. We saw how City went through a period where the forward line pressing had dropped off and they were getting punished by counter attacks regularly.

He hasn't been anywhere near good enough. I hope he improves but in the back of my mind I feel we should've bought someone like Kamaldeen Sulemana who's a young explosive winger that is comfortable on either foot and would've cost us a very reasonable price. And funnily enough, our lead scout in Scandanavia (Tommy Møller Nielsen) recommended young Sulemana and went on to say he was the biggest talent playing in Scandanavia at the time.

I do hope Sancho comes good but I do feel we should try signing Antony from Ajax next summer. Antony is quick and the biggest difference between Sancho and Antony is that Antony plays with a high intensity both with and without the ball and is a dynamic player with quick lateral movement with the ball.

Federico Chiesa was another player that was discussed on the forum when he was at Fiorentina, and imo at the time, I felt he could go on to have a better career than Sancho due to his warrior like mentality and his general intensity on the pitch. I feel we get too hung up on goals and assists and have a blind spot towards build up play and transitions and the total composition of what makes the collective tick.

I’m not sure winger is going to be his best position. He lacks pace.
Unfortunately he won’t be useful in any other position. He would struggle badly in a central position as he just hasn’t got any physicality to be able to play in the middle. The same issues we used to have with Mata whenever he played centrally. He constantly got bullied.

There are so many people in here who are convinced that there is a top player in there because watching highlights from the German League.

He is no different to Timo Werner (apart from being slower). He was being made to look good by poor opposition.

He isn’t fast. He isn’t strong. He tends to overplay it. He gives the ball away cheaply.

There is a reason Southgate was picking a 17 yr old Saka in front of him even in his Dortmund days. It’s because he is significantly better than him.

He's nothing like Werner. Werner looked really good and he does almost everything right, but the guy can't score. If he could finish, he would've been great.

Sancho when he gets in goal scoring positions is fairly reliable - but just doesn't add any threat the rest of the time.

sorry…I probably didn’t make the point particularly well…

i know he is nothing like Werner in terms of playing style.

what I meant is, he is a similar example of a player UK fans were convinced was going to tear up the PL following success in Germany…

but in a better league, just isn’t at the level required to be effective as an attacker in a top team.

I wish Sancho could be as much of a threat as Werner was for Chelsea... At least he was making the runs/getting in positions to comically miss.

Spot on
And now people think Bellingham is a 100mil player for what he does at the same club
The difference between a player with good technique and a very good player with good technique is the ability to be able to perform at high intensity and in pressure situations and Sancho is not up to it.
