I think Utd should walk away and stop trying to buy players from Dortmund. I think they will, however, persist and this will probably drag on again.

What if the negotiations are around the structure of the deal rather than the final value and deferring a portion of it this summer is the difference between getting Varane and a CM or just getting Sancho?
Yes, and aren't we also due a large sum from Inter from their Lukaku purchase? Inter may or may not pay that up on time, depending upon their own plans for him, which will in turn impact our transfer plans.

It may be different sitting in a boardroom with them negotiating, but they actually seem quite straightforward to do business with

Last Summer Dortmund gave a clear price and a clear deadline and said it was that or nothing and it was non-negotiable. It seems it was United who didn't take that seriously and made things much more complicated than they were.

I just hope United learn from it and this summer they can decide internally if the price is acceptable or not. If yes, pay it. If no, move on.

But i agree that it will probably drag on again, but i dare say that will be more a mix of United not learning from their mistakes and the Euros.

Chances of fee being agreed 10 minutes before the fans forum with Joel Glazer to try throw the fans off? He's might be a parasite but he's a clever parasite.

tbf as well we may have said ok we can't afford your price this summer and ended negotiations early. It was really newspapers and skysports pushing the narrative with nothing official ever leaking. By all accounts we never even submitted a bid so maybe we just accepted it early that it wasn't happening.

Dortmund might be straight forward to deal, however, they are greedy. Utd certainly have a problem reading the room in negotiations. It is clear that Dortmund do not negotiate and simply stick to their own inflated valuation.

This ilustrates perfectly the amount of confidence I have in this club with this owner and this board ability to get things done.

Ahh, yes. Sancho Day - the greatest three months of the year.

We absolutely must recruit players, he is a fabulous player, he is a future crack! I hope the boss will do what is necessary.

So we buy players for 90 million and they run down their contracts and might leave on a free.

Dortmund get players on frees and flog them for 80 million plus.

God we are mugs.

It is 'the United way'.

To be fair, if we get this over the line during a global pandemic, the club will deserve credit. We desperately need some creativity in our front three and he's pretty much the best around in that regard.

Today is Friday the 4th of June and that means it's Sancho day....Friday the 4th of June.

Just saw on Twitter that this brief around Dortmund wanting more in add ons is similar to stories breaking out about inflated transfer fees for Wan Bissaka, Maguire and Van De Beek before we inevitably signed them for 'lower'

Happy Sancho Day Everyone! :D

I don't think we have even entertained a single discussion about Sancho this year. As the Dortmund CEO mentioned, he goes for 100 mil. What would the discussions be other than pay the 100 mil and get it over with?
It will be the same drama in the media as last year, but we won't do a fecking thing again as I don't think the Glazers will back Ole again with an 80-100 mil player.

It should be also taken into consideration that paying 100mil during a pandemic will feck up the market again. Everyone and their dog will bump their prices on players after we spend 100mil on Sancho. Considering this, Sancho should be the last one of our transfers to come in, so don't expect anything big soon, other than the usual bullshit from Romano and the usual failed-life UK journos.

Thanks for pointing it out.
Actually the article says that you wanted 120m Euros last summer, United are ready to spend 80m pounds and Dortmund want 20m more in addons. I wrote the first point wrong, apart from that it's all correct.
All in all, it doesn't sound like insurmountable obstacles. That's why everyone is indeed expecting this to happen sooner rather than later.
We know that Woodward for inexplicable reasons has a fetish for doing deals late, preferably on deadline day (which of course really is bad for everyone involved), but by all accounts he might not even be in charge anymore?

So you think all the credible stories that have been coming out from every credible paper in England and GERMANY regarding Sancho of late has been a desperate and extremely over stretched attempt at PR after interested that dates back to 2017? With us offering £80m last year and reportedly offering a similar amount again this time? Even for the very biggest skeptic that exists it's too cynical to think nothing has been happening behind the scenes. The story that's come out today clearly highlights that this time BOTH CLUBS are keen to get a deal done for a fee both clubs feel is fair. Unlike last year there's no "€120m or nothing" BS and this time the clubs are negotiating DIRECTLY not through intermediaries and agents like how the arrogant German team insisted on last year. This time the signals are a lot more positive
His age, marketability and performances at BVB warrant a fee of at least £80m even in a normal market so the dynamics don't get affected as much and if you think he should be one of our last transfers I'll point to Eden Hazard 2012 and the fact that Rashford will need surgery on his shoulder and Greenwood eventually transitioning into a No9

This transfer is actually going into its 3rd summer. We aren’t very good at the old expensive transfers to put it mildly. When we stump up fast the players don’t even want to be here  And when the players want to come we leave them sitting for at least year, maybe two. It’s mad enough!

Harry Maguire, Paul Pogba, to and extent Aaron Wan Bissaka. All expensive transfers in recent years.

I'm camping here until we get him over the line ... refreshing mad skills will be put to use once more.

Happy Sancho Day!

I just posted some of this in the Joel fan forum thread I think it applies here too.

I think it’s fair to assume we over negotiate and that is even less likely to get the price down in any given window. It galvanises clubs who don’t need to sell. Given the amounts we will have saved on players after the marathon sagas - Sancho- 10/20 million? Maguire- nothing pretty much, his price went up if anything, Bruno- about 5 million? For those figures wouldn’t we have just been better off to pay up and have a season extra from a great player and a much more stable club in general? If we’d got Sancho last summer we wouldn’t have to bow out of the race for Kane this summer. Our bargaining tactics set us behind and slow the rebuild down to a walking pace and save us about the same amount of money we pay numerous deadwood players each year to not play for us

Who knows how long we were working on Pogba plus the fact he was here before and wanted to come back must have helped. also the fact real didn’t bid is a big one.

AWB was low hanging fruit unless another club came in. Palace were always going to sell and reinvest and develop cheaper players and continue the cycle.

the club and squad need to be streamlined and that includes improving how efficiently we do our transfer business.

Imagine being Sancho in all this.

Last year, sit down with Dortmund execs: you can totally leave like you want to, but only if a team meets our valuation.
Sancho: Okay that sounds fair, what's your valuation?
BVB: More than anyone has paid for anyone aside from PSG and Barca.
Sancho: Erm, ok I guess, what happens if Covid changed the market a bit?
BVB: It didn't.
Sancho: But aren't we running at a big loss cause of Covid?
BVB: No.
Sancho: But you gave a press con...
BVB: 120m.
Sancho: Maybe next year then?
BVB: 120m.

I know people dislike United so folks generally go against us, but this woudl be like saying how smart a storekeeper is because they're charging 100 quid for a can of beer that some clogger really seems to want. And they hold on to that price just long enough for the clogger to go elsewhere, even though that was really, really hte can of beer he wanted, and was willing to pay a reasonable price.

In my opinion we need to not cave. The only reason that BVB think we'll behave like idiots is beacuse of the Maguire signing when we behaved like idiots.

100m is not the market value of a wants to leave Jadon Sancho in a Covid world where no one is signing anyone.
BVB are welcome to hang on to him for another year and get 0 next summer. Well played geniuses.

We might be oversimplifying it, but from the reports that are released it seems fairly straightforward.

"Sancho is one of our best players. We would like to keep him for as long as possible as he is integral to our team. If you would like to sign him, then this is our price and these are our terms. You take it or leave it. If you choose to not meet our terms, then we are happy to have our player stay in our team."

Dortmund are under no obligation to sell Sancho to us. If we don't meet their valuation then we don't sign him. There's nothing unreasonable about wanting your asking price met for one of your top players.

Just because our club are terrible at getting good deals when selling players doesn't mean we have to be upset at other clubs for being more competent in that area.

He has a contract until 2023, so in next summer they can still sell him. Obviously for less than this summer, but as he is their best player that would still be worth it for Dortmund if no one wants to pay them enough.

Don't get this kind of attitude. It may come from misunderstanding that Dortmund isn't actively trying to sell Sancho, so the price they set is the one where it wouldn't be economically justifiable to keep him.

To give an analogy: Imagine me drinking from a bottle of water and you coming up to me offering to buy it. Now, there's not any real real reason why I would sell you my water, I'm thirsty and selling it would mean having to buy another one, but if you were to offer me something like 10 £, I might agree. Is that a ridiculous price for a bottle of water? Obviously. But from the position I'm in, you can either buy it or go off and get your own water. No reason to conform to the market value here.

His contract expires in 2023 though.

We probably have a manual at the club on how not to buy and sell. But someone must have deleted the “not”.
That’s why we take 2-3 years for incoming transfers and 4-5 years to get rid off players.

Sorry, by 0 next summer I meant he'll be going into the last year of his contract, so 0 in Jan or a much-reduced fee in the summer. His price should at worst halve with 1 year left knowing you can get him free in a few months, possibly even worse.

I think it's ego at this point. Dortmund rightly view United as a bunch of rich non-footballing idiots - a reputation we thoroughly deserve. So that rather mouthy Zorc fella has told everyone he's gonna get a British record for Sancho, and not a penny less, and watch as the smart man does one over on the silly buying Kagawa and Mhkitryan and look at how that worked out - HA - club.

If we want to stop being the laughing stock, you have to draw a line in the sand somewhere. For me, this is the line.

If we offer around 70m pounds that is the biggest post-Covid transfer, for a player that wants to leave, tried to leave last summer and will clearly try to leave again - that is a good deal for all involved. Including BVB.

As I posted last year, BVB were holding better cards last year, this year our hand has improved by BVB want to pretend otherwise. That's fine, I say we walk away. Sucks for the player himself, but if we want to stop being exploited we need to change our behaviour.

If it's worth it or not depends on circumstances. It's hardly as if anyone is trying to rip them off, where the sporting benefits of keeping him easily outweighs a small meaningless fee. We're still talking about record fees for an English player.

But hey, Dortmund are free to dictate the price, by all means.

Not entirely sure where the sympathy is coming from, though. They offer fairly high wages to youngsters and they're happy to feed the agent industry in order to secure highly rated talents that they aim to sell for insane fees where the agent gets a fat cut. It's hardly unacceptable or weird that clubs approaching to sign a player, given the situation everyone is in, wants a bit of flexibility in terms of money up front.

A bottle of water does not care who drinks it. A player cares about which club they plays for and how much they earn. If Dortmund are too greedy then it does effect Sancho. I agree that Dortmund can ask whatever price they want. I just feel that Utd shouldn't persist with Dortmund if the non-negotiable fee is too high. A few more points about the bottle of water analogy. Firstly you, as the seller, would be deciding the fixed selling price (same as Dortmund), therefor you would not be interested in any offer below your valuation. Secondly I would prefer to drink my own piss than give you £10 for a half- drunk bottle of water.
