Out of interest, could you add Sigurdsson to that comparison? He plays on the left as well and I think he would compare well with those two (and PL proven)

Seems almost guaranteed to happen - even the YouTube compilations make him look mediocre. Who knows, maybe they'll transform us but it seems to me that we could spend close to £200m on Persic, Dier and Lukaku (I see him as a straight swap for Zlatan's goals) and barely improve our first 11.

He looks like the exact type of player we need. Width and pace.

It's reassuring we're looking at that profile of player, just very odd we don't seem to have any decent plan B given the sums of money quoted.

You'll always get those crtitiques, even fecking Zlatan and Pogba get those so why shouldn't Perisic? The fact is though that the vast majority of the caf has been very supportive of Rojo this season. Fellaini generally hasn't been good enough so that's besides the point.
It's ok to critic when someone has a bad game, but criticizing just for the sake of it or cause some player isn't flashy enough is another thing.

One thing I've noticed about Perisic is he seems to play the ball very quickly. This will be a refreshing change, and hopefully prove effective.

Isnt just about who we buy though. Its about all the parts coming together and the players we have stepping up. Bailly was tremendous last year, but he's so young you have to think next year he'll be even better. Luke Shaw has the talent and Jose will give him a chance to show it if he's as good as we think he is. Pogba's got a few levels to go up, and he'll have a lot more help in the midfield than he had last year. And let's not forget Martial, who has so much upside its fecking depressing how he was last year. Mourinho's not just looking at what the players can do for themselves. The talent in this team is vast. This is far from a sixth place team.

Just watched Ausilio (inter director) on sky italy, he said they didn't considered nothing of United offer for Perisic.

Does it not ring alarm bells that a supposed £50m player is perfectly happy with receiving only £90k a week?

Not at all. How many clubs can afford to spend £68m on a winger in transfer fee and salary? None the aren't already stacked in that position.

If he demanded £175k a week and Inter demanded £50m the chances are we'd also be looking elsewhere. Because Inter hold the cards I imagine he realises it's either £90k or staying put on half that.

It's not about being flashy enough though is it, it's about being good enough at the role you're playing. Lingard is the prime example of this sort of discussion. Wingers are flashy by nature of the role, if they aren't then in most cases it just means that they're not very good at what they're supposed to be doing. You're making a mountain out of a molehill here, if Perisic has one bad game every 12 games then he'll be well liked on here assuming he does well in the other 11.

Because we wasted time signing flashy players like Di Maria, Memphis etc who didn't work out. Perisic (and this summer in general) is the first time we've shown a change in transfer strategy to actually sign players who fit the team rather than just get the exciting, flavour of the month players. So many signings on paper seemed great but didn't work out - Di Maria, Falcao, Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin, Memphis, Shaw to some extent. Glad to see we're finally moving away from that policy even if isn't as fun for transfer muppets
I would rather re-sign Di Maria than Perisic. Jose himself loves Di Maria. Van Gaal killed him. Pogba and Zlatan were both big players we signed just last year and were in our top 5 performers. The Van Gaal policy was to sign players who he thought would work in his system so I don't know what you are on about. He had worked with Bastian, Memphis and Blind. We needed steel in midfield and bought Schneiderlin. Don't see the problem with that. The only big name flops were Falcao and Di Maria. If Van Gaal signed Perisic, he would've flopped as well.

Well that's the hope but the 'vast talent' didn't prove they were better than 6th last year and we've either underachieved for 4 years or we aren't as good as we think we are. I know what you are saying and I've said the same thing to friends but it's pretty unlikely all of them things happen.

Bailly could do the exact same as Martial and go completely off the boil in his second year, Rashford could burn out, Lukaku could crumble under the pressure, Persic could fail to settle and do a Di Maria...basically we are at present relying on a lot of players stepping up, despite looking like we'll spend over £200m.

Of course we'll have to wait and see but in the interest of forum discussion...

£48m for Ivan Perišić is daylight robbery!

If we have any desires to stop our club being taken for mugs in the transfer market, we should abandon this deal immediately. All this says to other cubs, is that they can earn an extra 25% in revenue by dealing with us. Grow some balls, Ed.

Cuadrado, Salah, Schurrle, Quaresma weren't great (for him at least)

Good ones were probably Robben, Di Maria, Willian, Malouda

Decent ones Shaun Wright-Phillips, Kalou, Pedro, Callejon

All in all it's 50/50 i'd say
Damien Duff????

Don't understand the obsession with this player, there are many options in that role in the market

Forsberg is better, younger and cheaper fo example

What's Jose's record like with wingers? We know he usually gets it spot on with strikers and CBs...

Robben was signed by Ranieri.

Heres the list;
Wright Phillips, Malouda, Kalou, Ben Sahar, Quaresma, Mancini(was wanted by Moratti but not Jose), Pandev, Di Maria, Pedro Leon, Callejon, Willian, Cuadrado, Pedro, Schurrle, Baba, Salah, Nathan, Atsu, Mikhitaryan. of the 19 signings, only;
Willian, Di Maria have performed for a Jose team at a level acceptable for Man Utd starting line up. Kalou could be a good back up. Jose never got much chance to use Malouda although he was great for other coaches (laying those foundations)
If Perisic peforms like most of Jose's winger signings did for him, prepare to be very disappointed.

I think Ranieri signed him

Hmm, you seem to be underrating Pandev and Callejon, both would improve our team right now, and like you say Malouda was very good after Mou left.

Also that list is padded out heavily by second rate players who clearly weren't big money, first team signings. I think his record is very 50/50, it's unfair to name players like Ben Sahar, Atsu and Baba (not even a winger?) and then claim he has a poor record with wingers.

I tend to agree with you on most threads but on this Perisic case, you've been trying to play the victim on his behalf for yonks now. I don't want him but if he comes we should support on the mere fact that he plays for the club, that doesn't still means everyone has to like him. He will have to prove himself and convince someone like me. At the end of the day, the added pressure to deliver will be because of the desperation of José to sign him more than any other player and his experience of course.

There really is no need to try to stir up stuff. If he signs, I want him to do well because quite frankly I'm tired of the last few seasons.

It's like when the club were after berbatov, did not want him because of his movement and inflexibility in systems and inability to play on the counter, but have to support him. It's no so much the signing, it's the age and the lack of investment he will provide, and once again we be saying our certain positions have not been strengthened. The club needs to be in a position where we won't need to spend 200 million again, signings like perisic Jose will want more money again next season. To spend this much on a player where he will privide one year of his career at this club in his 20's is a farce, and he's already peaking where pace will be lost. But if we building something great, do we really want this player in 2 years time? when he's 30,31 years old esp for a winger, unless the player is special. Extending Rooney contract was poor decision, this could be worse

Still not really sure if those are his main targets. Knowing how poor Chelsea in transfer activity these days they probably are just 2nd and 3rd options.

I think most of the winger signings that he was planning for his starting XI (ignoring the backup) have turned out to be pretty good in all.

Let's even say that José is desperate for experience, why not throw in something at Sanchez? The lack of plan B on this guy is more intriguing than anything. This kind of desperation is what I expect to see for players of elite quality. All we can do is wait and see.

Not the details that matters, is it. The minutes he played!
Oh wow - I didn't read the full article. He had only been in the first team 10 days.... I feel better about Lukaku now, at least he has a decent record to fall back on

We'll see. He's already marked.

Schweinsteiger was very positively marked, I remember that clearly because I was critical of the signing from the first day on and got crushed for it. The people here turned quickly on him when he didn't perform. Fans are fickle, if Perisic joins and performs well, people will support him.

So what's your point then?
I'll tell you, if you don't mind. If Ivan plays 69 games as Messi and Ronaldo combining, and one game like Bebe, everybody will forget about those 69 games, and bitch and moan about that one! Whatever he does, it wont be enough for RC Managers, because he is old, too expensive, not flashy enough and not galactico. For example, Schweinsteiger was old enough, cheap, big name, and everybody here was so happy. (me too, tbh) When he left, they cried, because we lost a legend??? They would rather have Costa or James, because they are soooo much better, that is why they clubs wanted to get rid. Oh, no, they replied in anger, they wanted to get rid because they have wrong attitude, whiny little bitches they are. And remote control managers want those kind of players at ManUtd! Same people who, during match, bitch and moan about our players when they think they are not trying hard enough, and are fine with Januzaj leaving for the exact same reason, but as I said before cried when Bastian left. He was trying very hard, yes, to book flight to Miami. Same Einsteins who only remember Fellainis penalty (Everton) and red card (City), everything else, it does not matter, what he did, how he played, they cannot stand the guy from the start, he was marked.

We always hear the Real Madrid conprisment with galacticos, but that was an old 98-03 model, their 09-14 model or even going back to 2005 has been long term investment in outstanding quality, and look what it brought to them in the end? The thing is we not chasing a pogba, or a ronaldo 08 saga, we chasing a 28 year old who has not really made waves around Europe a great deal. But for me it's more worrying he's happy to be on 90K a week of that's true, now a top top player would be asking for how much his talent his worth. Now Jose mourinho's record with wingers is pretty underwhelming, and I agree the lack of plan B with this signing is truly what takes the cake, hell we had a backup plan to pogba, hopefully there is a plan B to perisic. But the galactico scanrio ppl always get mixed up on what everyone does want, positions better than what we got

Who was the backup plan to pogba?

One La Liga title in 5, is that what you mean?

One La Liga title in 5, is that what you mean?

Since 2005 they've won 4 leagues, 2 Copa Del Reys and 3 Champion's Leagues - all while domestically competing with arguably the greatest club side ever.

I don't know about you but I can't sit here and be snide about their success when in the same period we've won one more league, one less Main domestic cup and two less European Cups. We didn't have Barcelona or a resurgent Athletico domestically to compete with either.

Say what you want about the 'Galactico' policy but their second swing at it signed a lot of quality players who were the backbone to their success. Not to mention arguably the biggest Galactico becoming their all time highest goal scorer in what six years with half as many appearances as the next closest goal scorer.
