You skip Season 2??

The Gang goes Jihad and the Welfare episodes are two of my favourites. In fact, there's not a bad episode in that season. The show definitely gets better, but S2 is certainly when it starts to click.

Yeah I skip past it, its a completely different tone in the show and although those two especially the latter are decent episodes I wouldn't regard them as classics. They haven't given the characters much of their character yet, and up until season three they are all pretty similar to each other just being put in funny situations. It becomes a lot funnier when the characters take the focus instead.

In which season was the "wildcard" episode?
That along with the 2 night man episodes are definitely my favourite episodes

There's technically two "wildcard" episodes: The Gang Solves the Gas Crisis (season 4, episode 2) and The Gang Recycles Their Trash (season 8, episode 2). The two Nightman episodes are Sweet Dee's Dating a Retarded Person (season 3, episode 9) and The Nightman Cometh (season 4, episode 13).

The gas crisis one is the one I'm talking about. Brilliant episode

I'm watching the show again for the 3rd time and am currently on the 2nd season. They are definitely developing upon Charlie's illiterate, dumb, rat bashing persona. Also Mac's body obsession is beginning to get touched on. The episode where they try to cash out on the Jesus looking stain in the office has Dennis fasting purely because Dee said his face looks fat, which is really emphasising his vanity. So there's quite a few episodes that contributes to the development of their personalities.

Yeah I think the show becomes best when Charlie starts becoming Charlie. I enjoyed series 1 and how themed each episode was around a big issue, but it really kicks on a lot with Charlie becoming hilarious and Frank becoming part of the show.

Yeah as I said in a previous post you have to watch the first two seasons to get the characters although as I've watched it all through about 6 times I skip the first two seasons now and also some later seasons. The reason you need to watch those is so that the jump to the characters from say the pilot to season 3 isn't ridiculous and makes sense, the episodes you are referring to are the reason it works, they develop the characters well and actually pretty quickly.

Mid way through season 4 now and I'm still yet to be convinced. There are some good episodes, but some equally terrible ones. Just finished the one where they find a poo in Charlie and Frank's bed, and it was terrible. The last 5 or 10 minutes were enough to put me off watching another episode for a while.

And I can't stand Dee.

Honestly in that case, just don't watch it mate. If it's not for you, then it's not for you.

You're what, 40 odd episodes in. Call it a day.

I'll probably come back to it at some stage cause there are some very good episodes, but I find it very hit and miss. Just different tastes I suppose.

That poop episode was great, the way frank pipes up at the end was epic

That being said I haven't got into the latest season at all, do not rate it.

Also Dennis' reaction in the scene always kills me, so good

Dennis' reactions to things are one of the best bits of the show

In the most recent season when Charlie talks about how he stepped in poo to cover up the cigarette smell and goes "Happy?" "LESS HAPPY!"

Just started watching this a couple of weeks ago and I've been playing the Kitten Mittons advert in my head over and over for the last three days. Absolutely positively superb comedy.

That is a classic. As are pretty much all their home videos.

I loved the first few episodes and then Danny DeVito appears and ruins it. Completely unfunny and not needed.

Characters got annoying very quickly too. It's a shame as it had loads of potential but I realise many people love this.

I thought Danny DeVito vastly improved it to be honest, he's great in it.

Hmm, wondering whether the series is that good and funny enough?

Is it similar to Community? Better?

:annoyed:Can't find any other good sitcom comedy series after Community ended. :DLiterally every 5 mins of episodes each in Community is so funny.

:lol:Ok, I deserved that.

My questions are more rhetorical actually.

Seems there is mixed review, mostly positive though I think.

I'm still not convinced, but I will give the series a try soon.

:smirk:Hope it goes well.

Every show will have mixed reviews, moreso in comedy I feel, as it is so subjective. Someone above stated that Danny DeVito ruins it, but to me and many other fans of the show, he's one of the very best things about it.

It's very different to Community, but I do know a lot of people who love both - me included - but they're not really alike.

It's worth a go, but unlike Community, it's not golden from the start. I always skip the first season, as it's not quite there yet in terms of direction and character development. Some even skip Season 2, but I really like it. I think you can start at S2 without knowing anything about S1 and get in to it. (That's how I started on it). There's not much you need to know about the premise other than it's 5 horrible people who run a dive bar.

My questions are more rhetorical actually.

To elaborate: it's comedic masterpiece. The humor is actually very intelligent in the sense that it contains subtle(and sometimes not so subtle) social commentary, without necessarily taking a clear stance. It's a bit like South Park, now that I think about it.

But the real genius, in my opinion, comes from the way the episodes are constructed. Once you get used to the pacing you'll start to get excited when the episode is approaching the end, simply because you're dying to know how they are going to feck things up this time. My favorite episode(The Gang Gives Frank an Intervention) is a perfect example of this. There's a clear storyline, followed in two seperate groups. The setup is simple but funny. The jokes in the beginning/middle are both funny and serve as build-up for the end. The last 6 minutes of the episode are pure gold. Pretty much every line is a joke, one greater than the other, and it's all because of great writing and build-up.

Other elements that generally make for great comedy:

- Despicable characters that get progressively worse each season.
- Random, absurd and disgusting humor to balance out the social commentary. It makes for a great combo.
- Hilarious side-characters that often return in later seasons.
- Great running jokes.
- All the main characters are funny. Most people have a favorite, myself included, but I can honestly say that they all make me laugh consistently.

Oh, seems promising, and very creatively done. Sounds like my favourite kind of show :smirk: thanks.

Feeling the hype now.

Appreciate all the inputs, fellow posters~

I love Frank.

"All right, all of you-- I'm gonna give you all 24 hours to do whatever you have to do, but, tomorrow night, I am proposing to that dirty whore."

I also get so many laughs from the stuff they say when they're yelling at each other that goes unnoticed, like things certain people say when they're not in the forefront of the scene. Charlie is great for this. Dennis' reactions to things also. Mac's facial expressions. All gold.

I can't stop thinking about that scene where Charlie describes how he huffs glue and eats the cat food to get to bed and then after he does it and Dee is in disbelief, Frank bursts in, does the same and curls up next to Charlie.

That scene is so great

The part with frank just caps it off perfectly.

"I'm not an idiot there's a reason I do the things I do"

I love Dee arriving at the Thundergun film talking to Charlie about taking her clothes off in the sewer too.

Just after that, no matter how many times I see it, I always burst out laughing...

Ocupadooo.

Wow, you guys are right, the show is very funny in a loose, sick and perverted kind of way. Still not one of my favorites but tbh I find the show to be well designed creatively with good pace each episode. Many episodes are golden. Seen it up to its Season 7 so far and not regretting it. True, the show is improving season after season in many aspects like character's persona, actings, jokes and camera, yet it still retain that funniness in all, although I think S7 is quite weaker.

The Group is hilarious mostly  when they're ruining the lives of people around them without remorse nor guilt and especially ruining their own lives too by others, so good. Mac, Dennis and Charlie are so funny especially their antics, jokes and reactions. And I find it very interesting the three of them are the ones who produced and write for the show, wow good multi-talents there.

Other than the original three, I find many side characters to be very funny too, their story is well written and progressive, especially the Waitress and the hilarious Priest-turned-worse. I didn't find Dee funny though but her character is necessary plot-wise and complement the three thus completing the group, but she's so funny in those singing episodes tbf. I couldn't find Frank played by Danny DeVito funny though, but many fans seem does.

Season 7 has a a couple of weaker episodes - Franks Brother, Dee Gets Audited - but the strong episodes in that season are probably some of the very best.

The Gang Goes to the Jersey Shore, Chardee Macdennis, The Gang Gets Trapped, Thundergun Express, and the High School Reunion double episode would probably all make my top 20. The Gang Gets Trapped is Top 3. That anti climatic ending just gets me every time, and Frank's "Shit!".

"I'm gonna whip this little bitch in the face if she makes a peep" might be my favourite line of the whole show.

It's weird that Frank/DeVito is so polarising. I fecking love him and I can't imagine the show without him. When the show really hits its stride around S4, I find myself just watching Frank whenever he is in the frame. His facial expressions and zoning in and out is hilarious. He has scenes where he doesn't even have lines, but his reactions are priceless.

Ah man Thundergun Express is epic, the bit in the cinema at the end just caps the whole episode off

Ah yeah the ending of the gang gets trapped is so great. Man so good.

"Charlie doesn't know what a diversion is apparently, he just ran directly into the house!"

Delivery of that line is so good
