Television It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

I've enjoyed the meta comedy, but I can understand why it can be grating. Overall I think the season has been very good. Not the strongest, but still very strong. Some episodes have had a very different feel about them, whilst not straying from the style of the show or compromising characters or jokes.

I haven't seen any significant change in Charlie personally. He's always been stupid and illiterate, like the campaign speech he wrote for Dennis which made no sense, or the Nightman lyrics he wrote, which were just nonsensical pictures. I think he's definitely been stupider than this season. There's always been reference and visuals of solvent abuse as well. Instead of spraypaint or bleach, it's paint this time.

Has Dennis been toned down? In the episode where they moved to the suburbs, he got naked and tried to fight the neighbour. He looks as close to a mental breakdown as ever. The bit in Wednesday's episode before he gets thrown in 'boat jail' was amongst the most sinister he has been.

I agree that Dennis hasn't been toned down, in fact quite the opposite, that's one thing I like less about the show. Wondering whether or not Dennis was a psychopath was more funny than knowing he is, same for Mac's gayness. Although if I recall, wasn't that incident with Dennis stripping nude in front of the neighbor just in his head?

How could you watch yesterdays episode and conclude Dennis has been toned down? It was the most creepy and uncomfortable he's ever been. He literally almost full on raped a girl on camera (also am I the only one that thinks Glenn ageing very well and it doesn't make sense to have women throwing themselves at him)

Mac's almost certainly going to backtrack next week when they meet 'God' as well.

I think they're building up to a series finale next season, so it makes sense that they're starting to resolve these long running themes.

Ah yes, you're right about the nude scene.

But I agree with your point as well. Not knowing was funnier than knowing. I think it has to end next season if they are concluding long-running jokes. Unless they do a Simpsons-esque "Let's just never speak of it again, it never happened, back to normal next week" backtrack.

I'll be sad when it does end, but 12 seasons is definitely enough, and they've never really let the quality slip IMO, though the newest season is getting very mixed reviews.

I had hoped that the show would end with Dennis just being completely dismantled in the breakdown of all breakdowns. It still might.

Yep, Dennis' impressions were absolutely hilarious. Dee's Obama was also great cringe comedy, even though you see it coming.

The slow-mo montage of them all doing engine noises was just stupid, but brilliant.

A great finale, where you are expecting some sort of twist outwith the usual direction of the show, but in usual fashion, the ending is blunt and underwhelming, but in a good way. Reminded me of the "who pooped the bed" episode, with the episode-long investigation, then it just ends with "Nah... I did 'em. Poop is funny", roll credits.

Glad they got MAc to deny his sexuality again at the end, would have lost a lot of comedy moments in the future. I did like when they are trying to build a pyramid:

Dennis: Me and Mac will be at the bottom....
Mac: Why because I'm gay?

Gutted that this season is over :(

How long are the breaks being seasons usually? First time watching this up-to-date rather than binge watching on Netflix.

Wha.... The season is only over now? I'm waiting for it to be in Netflix and was sure it was soon

Looked like next season was going to be the last but it's been renewed until season 14.

Just caught up with this. Perfect show to stick on while eating or in the background, partly because there's almost zero running story lines so it doesn't matter if you aren't always paying attention. Sometimes I wish there would be a bit more continuation though.

Hate waiting for more episodes of shows to come out once caught up.

Heh, this show as well as other dark humor like Curb has basically ruined most comedies for me. Personally I loved the earlier seasons of Always Sunny, i re-watch them every now and then and still get a good laugh.

I think we need to start posting funny scenes in here I'll kick it off.

I just watched almost all of season 11 yesterday hungover and it killed me

One of those shows I could watch forever and ever, it's just so funny.

It's brilliant. Still so good after 11 years, amazing longevity.

Mac and Dennis move to the Suburbs is a top 5 episode.

Dennis losing his mind is hilarious...

Probably my favourite comedy of all time. It's amazing.

What I like is the characters are genuinely odd, and all have flaws. It's much closer to real life than some shows showing a perfect reality. I think that's why you can attach to the characters more

What's even funnier are the outtakes, when Charlie and Glen can't stop laughing at the "pirate" line.

Two of my favourite scenes. When Charlie says Ghouls are a like and Mac calls him a SOB . Almost like that's too ridiculous for even you charlie. Also the sound Dennis makes when Charlie sys Milk steak at the restaurant and how he cracks up when he says jelly beans raw, those were genuine laughs. The little things they do in the background during scenes are so funny too.

You can tell the scenes where they were laughing because in the actual episode they are just about holding it in. In that scene Glen almost laughs when he repeats what Charlie says back to him.

'You gotta make it sexy, hips and nips, otherwise I'm not eatin':lol:

That was a quality return for the show. I'm usually quite resistant to musicals but this one was brilliant. I really thought it was going to end with Frank using the N word.

The songs themselves weren't on the level of The Nightman Cometh but the added social commentary gives it that extra kick. The show's always been very good at showing us the worst of ourselves and this episode's no exception really. I was worried about this season being worse than season 11, which was still good but not quite as consistent in terms of laughs - and I'm still concerned that when this season's over it won't be one of the best - but to start off on a classic episode is a great sign.

I can't remember a single drop in quality with this show. Been great the whole way through. I think there is only one episode that I'm not overly fond of and that's the one where they're trying to find out who shit the bed.

I quite like that episode, to be honest. It's not a classic but it's pretty good. But the ending with Artemis' sleuth work gets out of hand. The length of the scene just makes the gags fall flat and the plot becomes too complicated to solve, which I think the writers just knew themselves, hence the entire episode ending on Frank just going "Nah, I did all the poops because poop is funny."

Wasn't a fan of the musical episode, but I never am with musical episodes.

There were several times in the new episode where you had to question what show you were watching; it just didn't feel like the natural style of the show which was probably intentional. I loved the Nightman Cometh but this one certainly had a different style; like a traditional musical.

Sunny is my favourite comedy TV series of all time, but I wasn't totally convinced by that musical. Seemed forced at times. Probably the episode with the least laugh out loud moments for me. I have no doubt though that the rest of the season will be amazing.

I thought that new episode was awful to be honest. It made me sad.

I kinda liked the story, but it wasn't funny, and the songs weren't very good, Bakula solo aside. Poor start to the season.

Really? That's one of my favourites. I love the typical anti-climatic ending.

The Liberty Bell episode is probably the only one I skip when binge watching it all from beginning to end.

Funnily, that's one I quite like. Mac and his whisting, wooden teeth, "Flourish the pinky" and Charlie asking to check the pulse of Cricket's headless corpse always make me laugh.

Another good episode. Seems to have started this season stronger than last. The latest episode really reminded me of the Jersey Shore episode, although maybe with less iconic scenes. Did get some grade A Dennis moments though. "I'm done with you. Keep up."

It ended a little abruptly (only 18 minutes, man!), and I would have liked to have seen Mac, Dee and the kids get free of their waterslide predicament before they hit the blood-filled water if only just to see Sherman gnawing his way through Mac's "triple-laminated" wristband, but that was a solid episode.

It went for a similar deal as the Slopes episode from last season, where the gang head to some kind of tourist resort and we watch the various scenes play out - only this episode worked far better than the Slopes one did. The problem with the Slopes episode is that it didn't do what the show does best when the gang leaves the bar, which is to throw them into a calm setting and watch them wreak havoc long enough for everything to go into meltdown. In Slopes, everybody on the mountain was weirder and creepier than the gang themselves, and the show doesn't quite know how to process that information. In the end it was a cop out that ended with an anti-climactic ski race, because why not?

But as I said, this one worked well because it threw the gang into a natural environment and watched them disrupt it. Mac and Dee completely feck up what is clearly one of the most popular rides in the park (nice to see David Benioff and DB Weiss featuring as Lifeguards 1 & 2); Charlie and Frank push to the front of every queue in the park; Dennis finds a protege, which is an interesting storyline to begin with, and essentially pick-pockets the entire park with her help. But as with every episode of this type that works, their plans work for long enough for it to descend into chaos very quickly. Frank's offensive plan to use AIDS as a cheap way to get to the front of every line backfires horribly when he goes just another step too far; Dennis has the locker key stolen from him, along with his illegally obtained haul, just when he thinks he's found a true partner in crime; Dee and Mac finally break free but land in a pool of Frank's "AIDS blood" while also drenched in pee.

It's also worth mentioning that Mac's attempt to scam his way into the water park, the "triple-laminated" wristband, is what gets him and Dee trapped in the first place.

That's what I like to see from Sunny. Separate plotlines combining in a sea of destruction while the regular people around them, who could easily be you and I, suffer as consequence of their actions; the gang not knowing when to quit while they're ahead and ultimately firing off the catalyst for their major downfall; the strings of Werner Trautz's "Grand Central" skipping away in the background while crying children are exposed to the horror the gang have inflicted upon their environment. It's everything we watch the show for. The jokes might not be as razor sharp as they once were, but after 12 seasons it's good that we can still rely on Sunny to bring out and episode like that.

Woah, how come my post was deleted? I spent about 20 minutes typing that out.

I didn't think any of the arcs really worked apart from Dennis'. Charlie and Frank was just them shouting AIDS and Mac and Dee felt a bit undercooked (unlike Dee's face which was a nice visual gag). The payoff to both arcs was funny but the setup was disappointing.

The show has changed, it's still funny but not as consistently great as it was, not surprising after 10+ years of the quality they've pumped out.

I thought the episode was great. Not prime IASIP by any means, but definitely better than the average episode.

I don't think the show has gotten worse over the years either. The quality has actually been pretty consistent since season 2 or 3.
