I've not watched any of that show, but I heard they were doing a crossover. Is it worth a watch in general?

I'm a fan of both shows, but I didn't love the crossover. Didn't hate it, it was just alright. Then again, I don't think there has ever been a good sitcom crossover episodes besides The Simpsons & The Critic.

Abbott Elementary is worth a watch if you like that easy-going mockumentary sitcom a la Modern Family, Parks and Recreation. Nothing groundbreaking, but it's good stuff.

I've not seen much of AE, but I assume they toned down the Sunny characters at least a bit for the crossover?

Certainly with the language, yes it's quite toned down. It's a two part crossover, the other part - which will be the gang's side of the story - will be in the upcoming Sunny season.
