India's tour of England

Ishant is out for next game so Shami will retain his place. Dhoni defended his 4 bowler strategy so don't expect both Jadeja and Ashwin to play next game.

Yup. Dhoni said so in post match presentation. Unless he is playing mind games like SAF

FFS.

Shami should be dropped but I don't rate Ishwar Pandey. Give Varun Aaron a chance.

Knowing Dhoni, it is out of question that he will drop Shami. He praised all 3 pacers for some reason.

Would be harsh to drop Pankaj, who looked good. I'm surprised Ghambir and Ashwin weren't playing in the first place.

For England Jordan will probably get the chop, for Plunkett/Stokes/Finn. He can be dangerous but needs a bit more time around the squad for me. I quite like Woakes and hope he keeps his place. I really hope Anderson doesn't get banned but it doesn't look promising, without him the bowling attack is really lacking. Finn is still only 25 and I still think he could become a top player but equally he can lose it a bit and take a hammering.

I'd probably go Anderson/Broad/Woakes/Plunkett and bring in Stokes if Anderson is banned. Keep them all in the squad though, including Finn.

Is Finn considered eligible for selection these days?

England are just going to get better. They'll drop Jordan for Plunkett and that's going to make their bowling significantly more effective.

What really pisses me off is the disrespectful way in which Indians play spinners without big reputations.

And they get egged on by the likes of Ganguly, "wonder where he's going to go.. I am guessing long on"

If you took 4 singles off the part timer every over, that is sufficient to put pressure.

both of these teams would get absolutely thrashed by Saffers or Aussies but still it's been a good test
England would have matched any team on that pitch based on team/individual contributions, perfect English conditions and the Duke ball. Athers described it as the perfect test. Might go tits up for the rest of the series, but it was a great performance and a fantastic team effort with all XI chipping in for the win. Butt hurt a touch dude? Threw your wickets away first innings and were just skittled 2nd time out. Outdone by a far better England unit this time.

India looked like they missed Ishant, yet Dhoni was keen to praise the Indian quickies in the post match chat. Weird.

Yes, clearly anyone doing anything other than hailing England is 'butt hurt'.

England wouldn't have had the same type of individual contributions had they been facing better bowler and batsmen.

Not even counting the fact that the pitch was mostly a road and was far from 'perfect English conditions'.

I'm not saying England are the #1 test playing side, just they would have given any other team a run for their money based on that performance. They've whipped India, who's to say they wouldn't have done the same against any of the other test playing nations? It was a great performance, a much needed one, with bat and ball. Cook got the runs he needed. Him being under pressure to score runs as captain was undoubtedly having an affect on the team and putting the ECB in a quandary over whether to continue his tenure as captain.

I'm hoping this win is the catalyst for England to start winning again. They really did seem to look like a team that were playing for each other and realised what was expected of them playing at home in an England shirt. They looked in the mood, and if it continues India will probably get flogged for the rest of the series. Such will be the confidence in that England dressing room. India were poor. It's they that have to pick themselves up and get their shit together. Based on this performance alone I sense a resurgence in English cricket. Bring on the next game.

And yes. I do think you Indians are butt hurt. Not surprised, flogged.

A road that England put 570 on and put you in. There were runs to be scored on that pitch when India were put in. Gave wickets away too cheaply. It wasn't even a bad track when you got skittled today.

You can't let us have 5 minutes of elation after a recent rough patch can you zing? Bastard

It was a very good toss for Cook to win tbf mate.

I don't think the pitch was a road.

I think there was a bit in it for the bowlers, if you bowled well, which the Indian bowlers failed to do. Broad, and to a greater extent, Anderson found that the pitch offered them assistance.

Well seeing as you lot got thrashed by Australia 5-0 with Swann and KP included, I don't see how that's me being butthurt.

I don't think any Indian test cricket fan gets hurt by losses anymore.

Before Lord's, I've almost forgotten the last away test we won.

Durban 2010?

That's like saying scousers don't get hurt by not winning the league anymore. As you well know, cricket is massive in India where they turn their star players into demigods. Subjectively, you might not be hurt by the loss...but hundreds of million other Indians will be. Looked some good bowlers playing in the IPL, makes me wonder why some of them haven't come on the tour (I know that's 20/20...but surely some can play the longer formats). Take Ishant out, and it looks a pretty lightweight bowling attack.

I agree with TMH, could all be SAF style headology, I expect Sharma to miraculously be fit for the OT test. OT is a quick pitch, which gets trickier as the days go by. Might be something in it for your spinner/s. Another pitch where winning the toss could have a massive influence on the game. Beware! Anderson is lethal with the new ball up there (bah! Forgot he'll prob be suspended ggrrrrr).

When kholi scores runs India always seem to do well. You guys need him to start scoring big. Since ST stood down Kholi has been my fave Indian batsman. Can he bat higher up the order?

This is why Virat is not scoring: http://www.fakingnews.firstpost.com...ike-rohit-despite-failing-in-as-many-innings/

Lot depends on whether Anderson gets ban for next game/s or not. If he is there, I fancy England to win. Apparently Ishant was seen playing football yesterday so not sure what the injury is. If not anything, United should bid for him. How worse can he be than Fellaini and he has hairs to match.

btw, brewlio, there are passionate Indian cricket fans on our forum but believe me, millions of Indians won't get butthurt by this loss. Primary reason is, the Indian fans who make news for burning effigy, stone pelting players' houses etc, do it for world cup or major one day tournament losses. They don't care that much about test cricket. Another reason is, what Zing said...those who are still passionate about this form of game, have forgotten about India winning away (tbf, we never won for long period away, ever). So bit like scousers you may say. Third is, Indian fans (not all) care more about individuals (as you said, making demiGods) and less about team. Sachin meant so much to them. New guys have not reached that level. So, fans kind of take a distant view of the performance and win/losses. Mind you, if they exit world cup early in Australia (won't happen as ICC have made sure top 8 reach next round by bringing back quarterfinals), you will see protests. Tests losses..meh.. Just after world cup win, within 8 months we had lost two series away 4-0 and very badly. General Indian public didn't bother. It was in fact opportunity for lot of social media and internet trolling :D

I agree on England performance being very good. I can't say if same level of performance would have been enough to win against SA or Australia, but this kind of spirited performance would have meant a close match against even the best team.

Botham called the whitewash before a ball had been bowled, even my brother did. I hate going down there. Look at all the English dick swinging after the 05 Ashes win at home, we went down there the next winter and got whitewashed again. The only time I can remember us doing well down there in modern times was the series Cook scored a glut of runs a few years back. Doubt The Aussies would beat us 5-0 in England...in fact I doubt they'd even win the series tbh. I don't see the relevance in your statement tbh.

When was the last time we won 2 tests away from the subcontinent in 1 series (excluding Zimbabwe)? Have we ever done it?

Winning 1 test is a prety good achievement in itself, relatively speaking.

Hard to say. Great with bat and ball on a decent looking track at home. We'll never know. It's defo an improvement from Trent Bridge though.

Reckon Ali will play at OT or will England go for a more specialist spinner? Personally I'd play the same XI, but it's a question of horses for courses. Saying that, with his 6for in the last innings of the previous test it'll be hard to leave him out anyway. There's better English spinners about, but Moeen is in for his batting as well as his bowling. I was surprised at him grabbing 6 there, but made up for him as well.

I'm sat here laughing about Butch hitting the winning runs in the pitch black all them years ago (was it India or Pakistan?) Umpires kept them on as they were pissed off with the slow play tactics, when they clearly should have been off the field half hour earlier. Yeah, we're shite away from home. A tour of Ireland or Holland would probably result in a series loss for England, or India for that matter

After this performance, no way England will go for more specialist spinner instead of Ali. Are there English spinners around who can bring something special to the team? Also as you said, Moeen is in for batting at no. 6 so it is huge bonus having him bowling well as a 5th bowler. Won't get 6 again in all probability but Indians will be more careful against him so he can at least contain runs when fast bowlers take rest and might sneak in couple of wickets.
I think they should bring Plunkett or Stokes in for Jordan. Jordan is too inconsistent and his bowling action somehow doesn't at all look comfortable for a test bowler. Great fielder though. Stokes is better batsman than his horror run with bat suggests. Plunkett too is decent with bat and can come handy at OT. Provided Anderson gets to play, only change I think should happen is Jordan out and Stokes/Plunkett in. Woakes deserves another go as he actually bowled well.

Was it in West Indies when we didn't go for 100 odd runs with 20 overs left and agreed for draw? It was 3rd test but not sure if we were 1-0 up or 2-0 up in series.

Most of the teams around at the moment, except South Africa, are terrible travelers.

What is annoying me is that there is no pressure on Dhoni at all. Cook has been under a shit load of pressure and he's not been nearly as bad Dhoni has been.

Any idea when Anderson's punishment will be announced? I assumed the hearing would be mid-morning?

he can bat at 3 but why drop pujara for him. pujara is a better test batsman and has a much much better defensive game.

Exactly.

Before lords our away record in the last 13 matches was 10 losses and 3 draws. No indian has forgotten the 8-0 trashing.

Fair point. But when you bat at 3 you've got to be putting runs on the board, not just defensively seeing the new ball off. Pujara is probably better at 3, but his lapses of concentration and shot selection must be a concern for the Indian selectors atm. Saying that, same applies to Kohli I suppose.

Gambhir/Rohit, Vijay, Pujara, Kohli, Rahane, Dhoni, Ashwin, Jadeja, Ishant(if fit)/Aaron, Pankaj and Bhuvi should be our team for next match. Anything else would be stupidity.

No way Dhoni will drop Shami. He even praised him for his efforts in last test! There are also reports of Bhuvi having swollen ankle or something but he should be OK by then. Dhoni uses Bhuvi as if he is spinner! 8-10 overs spells consistently in tests is too much and will have effects on the bowler. Very short term thinking from management.

Rohit as an opener would be a real disaster IMO, but we don't have many choices there. Between Dhawan, Rohit and Gautam I'd go with Gautam.

Anderson and Jadeja found not guilty. England will win the series now.
