I think there is far too much importance attached to being club captain. I think it barely matters. Other than leading the team out of the tunnel, the handshake before kickoff, they don't do much. I'd rather all the players collectively gee each other up. Because when you give someone the armband, someone like say Maguire, it can get in their heads in a bad way. And if people don't want to listen to someone who himself is flailing, it creates a vacuum of leadership. Maybe the armband can just rotate through the players. I don't want someone's playing style to suddenly change because the armband has given them some new responsibilities or is making them think about anything other than their particular job at any particular moment.

This also sums up Bruno to a tea. Instead of taking the criticism from a serial winner he whinges and seems to justify what he did.

Bruno makes it really hard to like him.

If he was playing for any other team I don't support, I have no doubt in my mind, I would have hated his guts.

Casemiro. I don’t care that he’s only been here for less than a season. I fear Bruno is a flakey character, when things are going well he’s fine but he does too much moaning and not enough actual constructive actions. I think referees think he has reputation so they instinctively go against him. We need someone new as our voice for the team and you can’t ask for a better leader than Casemiro.

Except he didn't, but whatever..
I’ve never seen a United player act like Bruno did on Sunday to my memory. Only Neil Webb comes close. Maybe Di Maria one game I think. He literally didn’t bother on at least six occasions. I know you have a blind spot for him but to suggest him stopping in the opponents half, jogging to moan to Rashford, walking towards the bench, watching Trent run off hi. Twice and doing nothing then running to the ref, getting skinned by a kid and walking off in a huff….constitutes trying is laughable. Not to mention we were playing Liverpool and he was the captain.

I think we have too many flaky players. It's all well and good pumping up the crowd and rallying the boys when you go 2-0 up against Leeds. But where was the leadership against Liverpool? I know what Keane would have done, but I didn't see anybody try to steady the ship or put a rocket up the backside of players that were half asleep.

So right now, I don't see a very good captain in our club. But, I'd choose Casemiro just because he at least leads by example, even if he's not vocal or able to set the tone for the team.

I know you have a blind spot for him

I'm not the one with a weird agenda. My assessment of Bruno was more or less perfectly in line with that of most United supporters before Sunday. It's just that people are reactionary as feck, which benefits posters like you.

If you look at his performance thread this season you will see the majority have him performing poorly on many occasions.

You do know that an agenda can be for somebody?

perhaps people’s assessments on Sunday were based on his behaviour? Something that you are very keen not to address.

You have a weird boner for him.

If that's true then it's because there's a weird cult who are highly active in there. I've yet to hear a single negative word about Bruno from United fans offline.

I have criticized Bruno's performance and antics multiple times now. Maybe not in this thread, but definitely in the other. I consider his antics in the Liverpool game(when he stopped running that one time and pushed the linesman) to be an ugly stain on his resume and I don't want to see it again. But I also believe in second chances.

My attitude is i mostly dont give a feck. But being the one who can communicate with the ref makes it important and i want whoever it is to be in their ear non stop, constantly moaning. Ideally a likable english player because it matters sadly. Being available every week would help too just so we can go back to ignoring the question which seems weirdly relevant to us but no one else for some reason. Who the feck is City / Arsenal / Tottenhams captain?
Varane, Casemiro dont really fit the requirements. Not having an armband wont stop them leading the team though so it doesn't matter but they just wouldn't be in contention for me. Martinez could but i dont see other people liking him any more than Bruno. Bruno fits the bill quite well really.
We dont want a respectable, reasonable captain. We want someone completely unreasonable demanding cards and free kicks and moaning about time wasting and diving and professional fouls constantly. Its part of the game and i'm sick of it costing us against more cynical teams

So is this how it works, we have a new captain until the next time we get spanked, and then we’ll give it to someone else.

The importance of an armband is ridiculously exaggerated. If you haven't got leadership qualities sprinkled throughout a side you're fecked, it doesn't really matter which individual is tasked with taking the armband. You need someone organising the defence, you need someone sensing the flow of the game in midfield and communicating to those around him. Absolutely none of this depends on an armband wearer. It's not like they get super powers by wearing it. You can do everything a captain can do as a strong character.

What that game showed is that under the pump we don't have someone to get a grip of things and make a common sense decision to dig in and just take our medicine. It didn't have to be the captain. Could have been anyone, especially those with experience - I'm looking at Varane and Casemiro down the spine of the pitch that could have communicated this idea. They didn't seem to do it so why we think flipping the armband around would make much difference I'm unsure. I suppose we have to hope it was just a really fecking bad day for these boys.

ETH has not got much wrong with us but for me this is a major mistake. I agree with him, we all make mistakes and Bruno is a winner but he is NOT and has NEVER been a Captain of Manchester United in my eyes and he never will be. He is too petulant and selfish. ETH has basically all but confirmed that he wont be dropped for his behaviour as well which is weak. We all know if say McT or Martial or even Fred behaved this way they would be dropped and we all know this. Very poor

Jude Bellingham - very young, only 20, lively, English-speaking

Addendum: Until the end of the season, Bruno

Based on literally nothing at all other than you inventing it inside your head.

EtH is right not to throw him under the bus, especially publicly. The consequences for Bruno might still be that he could lose his automatic place in the 11 this season or next. I imagine he'll get a chance to repay the manager and his teammates first though.
I expect the permanent captain will change in the summer and it won't be a promotion for Bruno.

Gundogan & De Bruyne when he isn't playing: De Bruyne captains his national team.
Odegaard & Xhaka when he isn't playing: both players captain their national teams.
Lloris & Kane when he isn't playing: both players captain their national teams.

So of the 3 captains and 3 vice captains of those teams, all bar one captain their national sides so lets stop this weird "who even is their captain" nonsense that crops up on here. They're all players used to leading and it's still important.

Tell me I am wrong though? Bruno gets off with Murder, he should be nowhere near the 11 tomorrow but Manager is blinded by him

Sorry, by saying that you'd invented it inside your head was I not clear enough that I was saying you were wrong? Yes, you're absolutely wrong.

Casemiro, Martinez or Varane. I don't care about whether the captain is fluent in English or not, that will come. I want the captian to be a leader on the pitch, show the right attitude and do his best for the team no matter what. I think Fernandes is a petulant little child who has been getting away with throwing his toys out of the pram too often. I would hate to play for a team captained by him personally. (I'm not saying he is not a good player)

Difficult one because obvious candidates are Casemiro and Martinez and I'm not sure how good their English is...!

I'm not suggesting he'd be my choice necessarily but Luke Shaw should be part of the conversation now

Its funny seeing Casemiro on there because he is flavour of the month at the moment.

Firstly, he cant speak English so that is difficult.

Secondly, I remember alot of fans were saying Maguire shouldn't be captain cause he just came to the club.. well Casemiro hasn't even been here a year.

Thirdly, Bruno isn't even captain full time, we want him removed as VC because of this one game, where we wanted our leader captain to show up...

Did Casemiro show up? 60% passing, no tackles won, nothing?

Did Varane or Martinez show up? They got put in a spliff by the Liverpool forwards 7 times! Martinez was running the opposite direction.

The discussion is not about Brunos performance, its about his attitude and actions unbecoming a captain of Manchester United in a historical loss.

Bruno very often does his "throwing arms out in frustration" thing when someone misplaces a pass, he makes a mistake, or the team at large is playing poorly.

His teammates have now come out and say that they are completely behind him and see him as a leader, so that puts the discussion to rest really.

Yes, I agree on that but its funny because when maguire was the captain the opposite was labelled at him, he does nothing on the pitch..

So what do fans want? players that will show emotion, or players that wont?

I have only one thing to Bruno. Don't use the energy on the negative things. He is using the a lot of his energy on negative things on the pitch. And be a bit calmer in the head. Save the energy and focus on scoring and creating chances.

Nothing wrong about his top winning mentality. But it is how he is using his energy on the pitches. Complaining with referee is just wasteless

The referees should told Bruno before the matchs : "Bruno, no discussion please". It so so hard and close to change a refereer decision on the pitch. Only Var will change his decision.

And the calmness and temper. We might can do something with it. Behaviour too.
So i am ok with Bruno as captain for the rest of the reason.

I think most fans would be content with a captain that leads by either example or someone who can get angry, not sulky. But again, the players themselves might see something entirely different in the dressingroom than select episodes on the pitch

That is your opinion. But I maintain what I said, if the players I quoted behaved like Bruno did they would jettisoned. There is one rule for some and another for others
