Well that’s your opinion, of course you are entitled to that. I’m not sure what you mean about over that period though? This season I’d have Casemiro, Martinez and Rashford as a clear top three and suggest the most impressive thing about Bruno has been availability and endurance, his performances have been inconsistent. Last season Bruno was terrible and cost us in many big games and moments. The season before that Bruno’s form and output fell off a cliff from January to May.

On the basis of this, then even if you can claim… but nobody had been better who has been here as long, it’s more of an indictment of the football club than anything else and certainly isn’t impressive.

This season is the first season since SAF retired that we have had consistently good performance levels from 3/4 players.

His form, without question, has been up and down - particularly last season when the entire team lost its way. But the failings of the team as a whole over the past several years make Bruno's overall good performance levels even more impressive, for me. It's clear that we see him differently, that's fair enough.

I don't know if the past week has persuaded anyone who voted for Casemiro, Varane or Martinez for Captain to change their mind. While I love all those players, the past 3 games have only reinforced my view that Bruno is absolutely the right player for the Captaincy. From his comments this week it also seems pretty clear, to me at least, that ETH thinks so too and will make him the Captain if/once Harry leaves town.

What’s become evident since we lost Varane and Martinez is that they were responsible for general team spirit that we’ve lost.

I think Martinez is an even bigger loss than Varane as Martinez leads by example and almost sets the tempo of our play, even Casemiro looks a different player with Martinez behind him which says a lot seeing the experience Casemiro has at the very highest level.

I’ve never been a fan of forwards being a captain with Cantona and Maradona being the exceptions and I just don’t see Fernandes as captain being a good thing as he’s too individualistic, we’ve seen players recently telling Fernandes to stop complaining and shut up which shows his team mates don’t see him as authoritive enough as I don’t remember anyone telling Keane or Bruce or Robson or even Giggs and Neville as such.

I tend to agree, their partnership makes us a different team but also Martinez’s composure on the ball is a huge loss. However the difference in the team spirit is stark….it’s not long ago our entire back four were giving each other high fives for every defensive action. Now everyone just seems to be moaning at each other.

I like Fernandes as captain precisely because he is fiery. He's passionate.

If I had to pick an alternative it would Martinez. He has the hunger, passion and can set the tempo and shows composure.

Casemiro or Martinez, for me.
They have Bruno's passion, but don't sulk and moan. Casemiro also has enormous pedigree in terms of achievements and experience. The only negative might be his inability to effectively communicate in English.

Varane is also a very good shout. Mr. Calm and Collected, but with passion. Not to mention the experience. But he might not play as much if we bring in someone like Kim Min-jae, plus he is injury prone.

So, for those reasons, I'd have to go:

1. Casemiro
2. Martinez
3. Varane

That being said, it's evidently clear that Bruno is Ten Hag's preferred choice.

Bruno. I think he is the heartbeat of the team and being captain should I hope help him cut out the histrionics over time.

Maybe his son is a future United captain?

you can joke but it’s clear ten hag has no summer budget to work with, so he’s forced to make do with what he has. and further to that, he’s decided the way to play out from the back is to put one of our least press resistant players in goal, one who clearly can’t even shot stop that well. fred is a joke. ten hag is a joke. the club is a joke.

I like the idea of making Lisandro Martinez captain personally. I don't think Bruno should be captain, too much whining and acting like a bellend imo. Martinez, Casemiro or Shaw maybe?

He's a committed player, never gives up, always keeps trying to make something happen, is demanding of other players. Don't think his attitude will be a problem if he won't be surrounded by players who can't control a ball, turn and make a pass, let alone all 3 at the same time.

I would go with Varane and hope he stays fit for most of the season. Would be Casemiro but understand he isn't fluent in English. Think it will remain with Bruno though and I am fine with that too.

This is why it can’t be Varane. We all know the likelihood is he will miss games through fitness issues.

He is also one of the most cringeworthy players in the league and already has the reputations of a cheat. I love him for his commitment but some of his antics are embarrassing. Personally I think Martinez can be a good captain.

Casemiro supposedly isn't fluent, no point in suggesting him. Varane would be my preferred choice, if fit (I don't know his English proficiency, but I assume it's good enough by now, he's been here for two years). But it's going to be Bruno.

waiting for the if not bruno or casemiro, who would you have as captain thread

I think Casemiro is the natural captain out there, but I have no problem with Bruno getting the gig. Or Varane.

you know what, i'd give it to Rashford i genuinely think it would bring him on more.
