ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

No!

Irfan had a mental collapse and I doubt he'll ever recover, but at his best he was an outstanding young player. Truly special player he was. Great lower order batsman and such a fine young swing bowler.

I was speaking in present terms Amol. I agree Irfan was very good when he first burst onto the scene.

Oh alright. Yeah he's become a bit crap now.

I think it's one of the biggest to Indian cricket for a long time what happened with Pathan. Could have been one of the best all rounders in the game for years and year to come. It's hard to not blame him, but it can't be a coincidence that all our pacers fall away after the early promise. Either in form or in pace.

The Zimmers are putting on a clinic in defensive ODI cricket. They've been giving good sides problems for a while, and they're well-equipped to make the most of these conditions with their line-up of disciplined slow bowlers.

If I didn't fear the wrath of Allah* I'd be throwing a tenner at Zimbabwe here

*That and if I could remember my betfair login

Very impressive performance from Zimbabwe so far, good bowling and some excellent fielding.

The Zimmers have enough batting to chase down 250 but I can see Tait and Lee giving them all sorts of problems if they're on song.

Shame Hamilton Masakadza's not in there.. I think he's a good bat.

Some decent batsmen there still. 262 should prove too much, though

Just looking at this Zimbabwe line-up, they've got Brandon Taylor who's always been a talented player who may have done far better as an international cricketer had been born in a less manic country.

They've also got Coventry who was briefly the world record holder for highest ODI score, Taibu who's a very steady hand with bags of experience and a couple of test match hundreds under his belt, and Chigumbura who's an absolute brute in the lower order. Not sure what's happened to Matsikenyeri and Masakadza though. They could use both.

feck me what an astonishing shot. He's just driven it over point for six.

I want to go to this bloke's optometrist and get a prescription for these specs.

Nowt flat about that pull shot though. Coventry could be from Chennai or Dhaka with his technique against the short ball.

These two need to apply themselves and whittle some runs off this target, I'm not sure how much I trust the rest of this Zimbabwe batting to deal with the Australian bowlers.

Aussie bowling looks pretty rapid on this track, I have to say.

Aussies bowling well. Johnson bowling well, surprisingly.

Raina's finally got someone worse than him at playing the short ball, how shit was that from Coventry?

Brendan Taylor's shot off Lee was absolute class.

The Indian quarter-final's in this venue -- assuming we'll qualify, pretty sure we'll do now that we've beaten Bangladesh. Just a matter of beating Ireland and Netherlands..

 Just looked at the fixtures, the first actual game that matters is more than a month away!

what's the point of the cricket worldcup
wouldn't it be better served with a 'cricket 8s' or something where they just get the competitive nations together?

having a team of 'canadians' (really Ausssie/english players with a tenuous tie to Canada who can't make their national squads) play in the world cup and getting trounced for 3 games does nothing for their development

Same for rugby
do we need to see NZ smash Japan 100+ - 0?

It's a tedious, dumb format, but there are a string of good fixtures in patches. From this thursday to Sunday, all good matches.

I'm looking forward to Bangladesh vs Ireland on Friday.

It's a bloody farce. You have rubbish teams pummeled on a daily basis and 8 teams that are pretty much guaranteed to make it to the quarters. So what's the point of the group stages? After the joke that was the 2007 world cup they should have got the hint. I think this was an attempt to make sure a team with India s popularity doesn't go out early leading to a decline in interest.

the abandoning of super-six format was good imo. It included a needless set of rules.
I would be in favour of increasing teams to 16 and then being divided into 4 groups. Two from each group make up the quarters.

Totally agree.

The super sixes were pointless. I didnt like the idea of points carrying over and all that. Needless over complication.

And this time they've made the groups too big, another mistake. It's fairly obvious which 8 teams will make it no matter what happens when the big teams play in the group stages. You're essentially playing for an easier quarterfinal game. So that's a hell of a long time for a tournament to be predictable.

Would go for either 4 groups of 4 with quarters after or even 4 groups of 3 with quarters after because the 4th team is going to be cannon fodder and nothing else.

Netherlands have been excellent so far, this Doeschate looks like a quality batsman.

Come on Netherlands!!

I hope they can get 280. We may just have the first proper competitive game of this world cup.

England have been very poor, the had better bat better then they bowl !! Anderson is so wayward at the end of his spell !!!

That's because he is a quality batsman.

I knew about him before Sultan, but didn't think he was THAT good a batsman, maybe I'm over-reacting but based on today's innings and some of the shots he has played, he will not look out of place in any test playing countries batting lineup. Cracking Innings.

Oh and shouldn't Anderson been taken out of attack since he has bowled two above waist height no balls, this match should be a cracker btw.

He plays for Essex, and has always excelled in all forms of Cricket.

He's now out for 119.

Wondered the same.

Worked out well for the Dutch, though. Took plenty of runs off his next over.

I'm with KM on that one. I knew ten Doeschate was Netherlands' outstanding player but I had no idea he was that fecking good. His Cricinfo stats are ludicrous as well. He's a bit Bradmanesque at associate level, and his List A and First Class numbers are amazing considering he's played for Essex, Tasmania and some good South African teams.
