ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

Shewag gone
This is the first match i've sat down to watch in years.. Enjoyed it so far, but i'm done with cricket.. Not as much fun as it was in the 90s

Brilliant from Sehwag, India throwing down the gauntlet in the first match.

This sure wasn't the start I wanted, but the important thing now is to do a reasonable job with the bat and make sure that our NRR doesn't get too fecked up for us to progress to the final 8. I would like us to get within 120 runs of this total, although I can see a disaster coming.

Shafiul and Razzak were awful today but they've both been in good form lately and will bounce back. Frankly there's nothing anyone can do when Sehwag is seeing them that well.

Most heartening thing about this match is the state of the Mirpur pitch. An absolute 1960d style slow-low dustbowl of a subcontinent pitch and I think we'll give the other quality teams in our group a lot of troible.

Munaf wicket to wicket as always, some sense of normalcy restored. Zaheer's bowling well. Hope Nehra finds his form and comes back in.. wouldn't mind Chawla coming in, either.

What's with the rotating commentators thing?

Can the Indian players stop smiling and be a little ruthless?

I still maintain on these pitches two pacers are enough. Ashwin or Chawla would be fine. Pathan, Sehwag and Singh can also bowl a few overs.

I can't really see anyone but India winning this tournament.

Should be favourites. However, the weight of expectation will be a great burden. Watch out for Sri Lanka. Pakistan and Bangladesh will also surprise a few teams in these conditions.

a great innings by shewag, also kohli looks likes a quality player. just hope we aint peaking too early. It was a real bad move by Shakib to bat first, i know history etc... says that chasing teams have done better but still thought should of bat first.

Concern i have with India is the bowling attack, at times it looks really weak.

Good to see Bangladesh doing well and giving it a go.

All test sides should qualify with ease. I would've thought a top two qualifying for the semis would've made it more exciting...but there you go. And I quite like the Mirpur stadium...shame there's a lack of cantilever stands in the sub-continent though.

Slow bowlers should be fine on these pitches. However, the weak link is a quality pacer to partner Pathan.

I got the feeling Bangladesh were playing more for the NRR than the win.. which, if they were, is the right decision in my opinion.

Tamim dismissal is a minor tragedy. He was finding some touch and looked like he wanted to bring up his ton in quick time

We're well on track to haul in 300 at this stge. If we can get 315, we might well have saved our world cup. One more wicket and Raqibul Hassans arrival at the crease could change all that though.

There he goes, Shakib out and Raqib in. Oh dear.

On another note, Bhajji is a fecking cockhead.

Naeem's a good striker of the ball. He's just developed that exasperating habit of Bangladeshi lower order batsmen of taking two steps outside leg stump and swiping at everything, ultimately missing almost all of them and trudging off for a single digit score at a strike rate of 12

He and Riad never ever score runs when it is necessary...I feel no confidence at all when they come into bat.

We were dead set for 300, which would have been an excellent total after getting manhandled by India...instead they've undone some of the good work, and we'll finish with a whimper.

Our NRR is so freaking screwed. We need to beat Ireland, Netherlands and the West Indies, and hope the Windies don't upset any one of India, South Africa, England.

I think it's fairl imperative that Naeem is dropped and Shuvo's brought back. Utterly hare-brained decision to include him at Shuvo's expense.

That was always the equation, but we now need to hammer one of Ireland or Netherlands more comprehensively than we previously needed to.

It's fairly safe to say that India and the Saffers will beat the Windies. Let's just hope that the Poms turn up when they face them.

India 370/4
Bangladesh 283/9

Not a complete disaster, and the batting did restore a bit of pride, but we simply never recovered from that decision to put India into bat after winning the toss....

Bodes well for the rest of the tournament with regards to the batting, but the bowling...wow, some major concerns.

Well I've been having this conversation all night but I fully back the decision to bowl first. We have a bowling attack that includes four spinners and two seamers. To have to bowl in the evening with the dew coming down would be suicidal.

He's gash with the ball. Club standard. Shuvo needs to be brought back asap.

They're showing replay from the 83 world cup on TV. feck me Holding and Garner had lovely actions didn't they?

If Sehwag takes care to not throw his wicket away like usual, I can see him absolutely piling on the runs. More often than not, he gets himself out.

Holding's action is probably the most beautiful thing I've seen in cricket.

Apart from a nice pair of melons a woman in Safrica flashed on international tv once.

Expect that New Zealand and Sri Lanka will win tomorrow.

Slow bowlers should be fine on these pitches. However, the weak link is a quality pacer to partner Pathan.

Do you mean a quality pacer to Munaf Patel or are you talking about Irfan Pathan, who sadly due to injury has not been looked at it. i think we might play 2 spinners and 2 pace bowlers in some of the biggeer game.

Never seen Tamim Iqbal play such an innings.

Same here normally its just all out attack but today he looked intent on playing a long innings.

Both Munaf and Irfan are very ordinary cricketers.

Nice pics. What did you think of the match?

SL team looks very strong on paper.

I thought it was a stupidly arrogant decision from Shakib to put India in at the at the toss and from Sehwags first ball, it was all over. The only way Bangladesh stood any chance to win such a game was to bat first and to their capability (like they did) and score 275+, then get two early Indian wickets and then let the spinners apply pressure, Even then, Bangladesh's early bowling was third class, just not good enough for a team of Bangladesh's stature - they are not a 'minnow' any more and should stop behaving as such.

Thankfully for them, Bangladesh's batsmen showed up and performed to their capability. Tamim played a very elegant innings and I hope he retains this more restrained approach. And so they can take some confidence from this game ... But we all know Bangladesh's 'cup final' is vs West Indies - win that and the expected wins vs Ireland and Canada and it's into the 1/4 finals and then its a knock out! I'd like to see Ashraful back in the side; he may be an inconsistent enigma but he still has the class to play a match winning innings, something his replacement cannot.

Having said that, the India batting line!!!! .... India murdered Bangladesh yesterday and all that without deploying their nuclear middle order of Dhoni, Yuvraj and Pathan! I thought Kohli's innings was even better than Sehwags! India have developed a near perfect batting line up to play the 50 over game and at some point I think they will break the ODI world record of 434 during this tournament. They are without doubt the team to beat in this tournament, made even stronger with the memory of their shameful exit from 2007. I cant see beyond them.

Our bowling attack upfont can cost us IMO. If teams target our pacers we'll be in trouble. We should possibly go in with Munaf, Zaheer and two spinners.

I was thinking this leggie bowling is good -- turns out he used to play in the Ranji trophy for Tamil Nadu.. played for India u-19.

I didn't like Sehwag's innings either. Nothing in it for the bowlers, and the bowling was really bad. I think Sehwag's had many other innings better than this.

Kohli's was OK, nothing special in that either.

the way the results went today i expect australia will win with ease

Both Munaf and Irfan are very ordinary cricketers.

When Munaf started he looked really good but thats like a lot of indian bowlers. Irfan again started really well but did he really focus too much on his batting which could of been his downfall.

I know that IPL is just a domestic t20 league, but am really looking to see how Irfan does as he does well am sure an indian call up for the england tour should be on cards

Kenya match over before I could wake up..

Woke up here and was shocked to see match over, Canada started well bowling but once again it was another easy win.

Same i think two pacers and two spinners might be our best option, dont know if we will do that but i would try it out.

No!

Irfan had a mental collapse and I doubt he'll ever recover, but at his best he was an outstanding young player. Truly special player he was. Great lower order batsman and such a fine young swing bowler.

It simply cannot be a coincidence that so many young Indian talented pace bowlers fall apart completely after a great youthful burst.

Munaf's debut (I think it was his debut) in test cricket was against England and he was magnificent. We finally had someone bowling consistently around the 145 mark and moving the ball as well. Now he's nowhere near that pace albiet hits a decent line and length.

Irfan as I mentioned above was brilliant when he broke into the team for a few years. He had everything and I mean that. I had never been as excited about a player since Sachin.

Sreesanth has always had very good tools to work with. His seam position is excellent. But he still hasn't properly grasped line and length. His bowling the other day was rubbish.

There are so many more and it's always the same story.
