This reminds me of England pre Morgan. Just aimlessly wandering towards defeat. It is an upset but you suspect if they win here they’ll just get smashed in the next one making this game look irrelevant.

The worrying thing is that major changes have already been made and its only gotten worse. Roy, Bairstow, Malan, Vince, Billings, Ali, Dawson, Woakes and Willey have all moved on in the last couple years (plus Hales a while before that) Curran out of favour, and not quite sure if Topley is injured or not selected. Plus Stokes, Archer and Root have often been unavailable so loads of new players have been tried out. Salt, Livingstone, Carse, Overton, Atkinson and Brook have all been brought in or given more prominent roles with mixed results. Others have been tried a bit too like Jacks, Ahmed, Hartley, Banton, Smith, Bethell, Potts, Atkinson etc

Well deserved for playing clowns like Overton

Actually one of our better performers this year. Its some of the more established/bigger names who have really flunked, like Salt, Brook, Livingstone, Smith, Buttler, Wood, Carse.

Only Root and Duckett have really performed, Rashid, Archer and Overton have done alright.

No support for Root, all it would have taken was one of Duckett, Buttler or Overton to convert to 50.

Afghanistan look a good team and Azmat bowled so well.

Even if England had managed to get over the line here, it's rather doubtful they would have beaten South Africa on Saturday. This side just isn't good enough.

The problem is that there's not much to replace them with. And that includes the captaincy. Brook will get it next but as someone who's yet to show they're capable of holding down a regular place long-term, it isn't ideal.

He won his first tournament but the 3 since then we've been appalling. We're also shite in bi-lateral series now too.

Re: captaincy, Crawley has been made captain a few times in ODIs so is another option. Which is weird considering he doesn't make the side right now, but I'd happily take him instead of Salt.

It's not a massive shock. England have not been great for a while and Afghanistan are not minnows. England were favourites but far from nailed on here.
