ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Why would they change their stance? Their entire stance is that Pakistan is not safe for their cricketers - I don't understand how not participating would change their stance on a safety issue.

At the same time, there was a risk for the ICC that India could instead play a random bilateral series that would draw more eyes than a flagship tournament.
My point basically is that I don't think governments should get involved in sport. Leave it up to the players. If the players say they don't want to go because of safety concerns, I would have no problem with that.

Wouldn't a simpler solution be to just disqualify India since they are essentially refusing to play at the chosen venue for the tournament but instead are being catered to by moving their games to another country?

From the article you mention, it appears the decision to not allow India to play in Pakistan was a political one. Politics should have no influence in sport and unfortunately if the Indian government want to take that stance their cricket team should have to suffer the consequences.
This is the fiar solution for all.

New Zealand have a massive leg up from this whole situation as well. Whoever they play will have had to have travelled to Dubai and then back to Lahore again before facing them

If India win the semi final, then the final will be played in Dubai. So they need to travel from Dubai (last game) and then play semi in Lahore and then go back to Dubai to play india in the final.

The whole schedule is messed up.

This whole schedule fiasco was bound to happen. ICC had only two choices, either disqualify India for not playing in Pakistan or just move the tournament to a different country. They wanted to appease both and this is what you get.

Having said that travel should not be an issue at all. It is at max a 2 hour journey from Lahore to Dubai. India traveled more within India in 2023 WC.

Overall a very poorly organized tournament. The bad weather and pathetic drainage system made it even worse.

All over the internet people are whining about India only playing in Dubai.

Instead, they should be contemplating why India wasn't disqualified. India were happy to not play this tournament. the ICC needs us unfortunately, as the game hasn't grown.

We need to grow the game so that it isn't so reliant on India, and none of this would be a problem.

That being said:
1. Dubai isn't a good pitch for India. We prefer flatter pitches here, and struggle on low , slow tracks as our own batsmen aren't great against spin anymore
2. England played their first two in Lahore, and lost before they even got a chance to travel.. No unfair advantage to have two games in a row there, or are they just so shit (in ODIs only) it doesn't matter? Not a hit at England. Just that because of the common India hatred in the cricket world, other stuff is ignored.
3. This tournament is a total waste of time. Bring back tours that mean things (ODI, Test, T20s) and aggregate cricket to give opportunities to more smaller teams. The next Afghanistan is out there somewhere

shame. england tried to save one day cricket, but the rest of the world just wouldn’t let them do it.

There's no new Afghanistan out there. Afghanistan doing well shouldn't be that surprising because most of their players grew up playing the game in Pakistan.

It's a shame Varun has been kept out for so long. Admittedly he hasn't bowled this well before this for India, but he has always been very good

A T20 bowling attack with Varun and Bumrah bowling 8 overs is just a huge advantage for India

Spinners usually peak later , and his fielding was worst before

Varun’ a story is completely random. I haven’t seen cricinfo cover it. He is an architect who was obsessed with cricket, but couldn’t make it as a fast bowler. Every year he changed careers - architect, movie actor, writer and a couple more. About 9 years ago we had massive floods in the city and it damaged all the inventory he had bought for some construction he was architect of and he lost all his money. Came back to cricket and same year married a girl who said if he can earn 100 dollars a month, that’s good enough.

comes across as a lovely guy in the Tamil interviews - still rides a scooter, lives in a small house.

It's a 2-2.5hr flight.. Its like flying from Mumbai to Delhi.. Not ideal, but its not the biggest issue.

I remember before the 2021 t20 world cup in Dubai there was a lot of hype about him before the first match against us. He was the type of bowler (mystery spinners, like Ashwin) who could trouble our batsman and was worried when he came into the attack. Was surprised that Babar and Rizwan played him relatively well but didn't think he would be completely off the team from then.

Didn't read that India offered to not play the tournament but interesting that they did and ICC still refused.

Agree on the other points, I've said for a while that ODI cricket is dead but it's been dragged on because of the World Cup.

The cricket boards, and the ICC, need to realize that the future of cricket is in franchise cricket and try to create a compromise with it rather than antagonizing, which will drive more players away from international cricket.

Only thing that sucks is that franchise cricket will also be dominated by India, with IPL owners already owning t20 teams from other leagues, so it might further India's dominance and completely relegate Pakistani players to only playing in the PSL or league IPL don't seem financially viable.

have not been watching.. at work.. is this not a great score by Australia?

Not a simple chase in a semi final - but with the Aussie bowling options you'd have to fancy India to knock it off.

Poor spin options outside Zampa too.

I think this game is far from over

Big wicket now. Shreyas has been very good for us for 2+ years now.

Yes true, Cricket is a funny game - shouldn't second guess it. Tricky pitch to start on.

Its still a balanced game. Jadeja usually cant hit straightaway.
Good game actually, fitting semi.

would now say Aus fav. hard to get going on this pitch. its a good pitch though once you are settled.
Edit: as I typed, Pandya squeezes 8 runs.
