ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Actually one of our better performers this year. Its some of the more established/bigger names who have really flunked, like Salt, Brook, Livingstone, Smith, Buttler, Wood, Carse.

Only Root and Duckett have really performed, Rashid, Archer and Overton have done alright.
He is playing in the game as a finisher and that shot he played was school boy level. This team has no discipline at all and just do what they like. I am all for creating an atmosphere of comfort in the team but this team has gone to an extreme now. It's fine for a player to be out of form but I just find from top to bottom there is a lack of accountability in the team. The press conferences are pretty much a sign of that

Really like Afghanistan cricket. They have grown more than Bangladesh. Bangladesh still play like underdogs that too a coward cricket. But Afghanistan play better and have more fun cricketers. Hope they get to play more matches against top sides. Would do them real good.

Seen the Afghanistan scorecard. Only 4 players made double figures!

Salt again with a stormer up top. He needs dropped and buttler has to open. That's an easy fix. Find a new finisher and then Get root in at 3 as well

Even if England had managed to get over the line here, it's rather doubtful they would have beaten South Africa on Saturday. This side just isn't good enough.

The problem is that there's not much to replace them with. And that includes the captaincy. Brook will get it next but as someone who's yet to show they're capable of holding down a regular place long-term, it isn't ideal.
I think there is enough talent to field a decent side however there was no balance to this team. Loading it with fast bowlers and no 5th bowler isn’t the answer. Move Buttler to open with Duckett and bring in someone like Curran as an all rounder. We probably need to develop another batsmen and try some new bowlers. I believe the talent is there, we just need a solid balance.

Totally correct about the balance. Not sure how they don't see it.

Jos opening was the most obvious move and it's hard to believe that they didn't do it. England have been playing with 4 bowlers and conceded 350 to which there response was to bring in Overton for Carse which just shows how non serious this management is. I also think when things go bad for you in the field you need a captain with the ability to change things around but Butler is just hopeless there

England coaching and tactics were absolutely abysmal in the last month

- Picking zero bowlers with defensive bowling skills
-No death bowlers
-Over reliance on express pace
-Picking one good spinner
-Salt as an ODI opener
- Too much slogging all around
- Too many right handers in the team
-Announcing team 2 days before white ball games

Just very casual attitude in general

would love India play against them home/neutral venues for 3+ test matches.

Yes, the team from top to bottom is poor. Just think it's weird to single out Overton, who has bowled pretty well and was batting at number 8, and outscored the majority of the top 7, who yet again completely failed. Brook, Salt and Livingstone are averaging under 15 in 5 ODIs this year, Smith similiar (in less innings), and Buttler not much better. He's a bowler who can slog it a bit, he's not an accomplished batsmen who should be expected to close out an innings with measured control, he should be expected to face 10-20 deliveries and try to hit a few boundaries. Ideally I think he should only play T20 but with Carse out he's an alright choice at #8. Also Mark Wood has seemingly escaped criticism despite failing to make much impact with the ball.

We've been in worse relations before and still toured each other, we started playing series a few years after a war in Kargil! So no, there is nothing special right now compared to before when we were travelling to each others country frequently in the 2000's, other than India currently being ruled buy a Hindu nationalist, which explains pretty much the whole reason why they aren't touring.

The geopolitical issue only goes one way since Pakistan went to India for World Cup in 2023, though I didn't agree with that given that India didn't travel for the Asia Cup a few months before and were certainly never going to travel for this Champions Trophy. The security angle is bad faith as well since India hasn't made any effort to try and assess what measures Pakistan is willing to take to protect the team when here. It's stupid to think that a terrorist organization that wants to commit an attack would only want to do it to India and not the 6 other touring nations. If their motivation is to just attack Indians, they've had plenty to opportunities before with teams for other sports travelling or with Indian journalists currently there.
India take decision not to play with Pakistan after Taj hotel terror attack in 2008, there was no BJP (Hindu nationalist) party in power at that time. BJP just continue that stand.
Why would India change their stand now? The relation between 2 countries are at their lowest point.
I also believe Indian government don't trust Pakistan securities.
And yes its not stupid to think there are some not-state actors in Pakistan who will target Indian team to get maximum attention of world.

Apart from the fact that India did play a series against Pakistan in 2012

Grim.

India likely to win it from a lovely hotel room and facilities in Dubai - Cricket

Only the Aussies can save cricket now, hopefully they turn on their usual tournament winning mode (feels odd saying that).

This Australia vs Afghanistan coverage on Willow is the worst I've ever seen. The game keeps switching to the WPL game from yesterday between the Gujarat Giants and RCB or going to commercial between balls being bowled. They don't even wait to the end of the over. In the space of 30 seconds, we've switched three times to Phoebe Litchfield giving an interview, 2 shots of the crowd and an attempted catch from a ball that somehow the coverage missed being bowled. I've never seen anything like it. Terrible.

Unfortunate that the Australia - Afghanistan match was called off due to rain; took away Australia's chance to top the group! Still have major question marks over the bowling that Australia's brought into the tournament, especially Spencer Johnson who seemed quite wayward in his early overs.

Was this horrible scheduling by the ICC or is the shite whether unexpected.

It's been a bit of a disaster. Must be close to half the games hit by rain edit it's 1/3.

For Afghanistan to make the last 4, they need England to win by 207 runs. One can safely assume that won't happen.

No idea why the bookies had this as close with South Africa only slight favourites. We all know how England just collapse at the end of these tournaments/tours that have gone badly.

Bizarre to think there's a good chance Brook is named the next ODI captain and yet he probably doesn't even merit a place in the side right now never mind the captaincy.

Easy solution would be to have India play their 3 game before the other teams so everyone knows exactly where they stand as early as they can but the ICC are idiots.
Wouldn't a simpler solution be to just disqualify India since they are essentially refusing to play at the chosen venue for the tournament but instead are being catered to by moving their games to another country?

From the article you mention, it appears the decision to not allow India to play in Pakistan was a political one. Politics should have no influence in sport and unfortunately if the Indian government want to take that stance their cricket team should have to suffer the consequences.

Sure and then run the tournament at a loss.

Sometimes things are not just entirely about money. As popular as cricket is in India, if the cricket authorities took that stance, hopefully the Indian government wouldn't be able to maintain their position for very long.

What's the old saying? "Why can't we all just get along?"

Why would they change their stance? Their entire stance is that Pakistan is not safe for their cricketers - I don't understand how not participating would change their stance on a safety issue.

At the same time, there was a risk for the ICC that India could instead play a random bilateral series that would draw more eyes than a flagship tournament.
