the £20m quoted is just too much.

he is a good young player, and got all the potential to be a decent PL player, but for a player who is 21 in a few days time, that amount of money is just over the top.

13mil cash

+

N'Gog is worth around 0.5mil

13.5mil for a young player with some potential is not a bad deal for Liverpool at all.

If I were Sunderland, I would have gone for 17-18mil cash straight up, and left N'Gog the feck alone.

The thing is... Liverpool are stocked with CM's and if I'm not mistaken... Kenny has adopted a 4-4-2 as of course they will use Suarez/Carrol as the front line...

Gerrard fit means that Lucas/Spearing/Mereiles/Henderson will be fighting for one spot and apparently that means they'll have to bench their 20m signing for most of the season... Unless he makes a breakthrough that is.

Well, a good deal for Sunderland then, not that N'Gog is entirely shit, but he'll provide Campbell/Gyan good company and good options for S.Bruce...

( At least they won't have to play their CM's up front when all their striker are injured ).

Its like they got Henderson for the right price + a new player imo.

Liverpool's transfers have suddenly taken a sensible direction since Rafa left and new ownership came in.

Buy British, even if it means you're overpaying. Unload the likes of Ngog, the transfers of the past.

Better days ahead for Liverpool. I didn't think that Henderson offered much to United that we didn't already have, but for Liverpool he'll add some necessary solidity in midfield.

Might be a good signing for them.
I think he'll help with their usual beginning of season flutter and euphoria.

It really makes sense spending good money on British central midfielders considering how they are fairing both at club and international level.

If Dalglish believes that 352 they were playing was the way of the future than it'd be an interesting formation I suppose.

-----Suarez--Carroll
-----Gerrard
LWB Lucas Henderson RWB

Doubt it has the width to do it in the league for a whole season though.

Sunderland have agreed a fee with Liverpool for the transfer of Jordan Henderson.

Jordan Henderson will hold talks with Liverpool after the two clubs agreed a fee for the midfielder.
The 20-year-old, who played for England under-21s on Sunday, is set to discuss personal terms with the Anfield club.
A club spokesperson said: "A fee has been agreed with Liverpool for Jordan Henderson and he travels to Anfield today with the club's blessing.

Official from the Sunderland website.

Spot on.

All of the opinion on here seemed to be that Liverpool are paying over the odds.

In comparison - Liverpool will be getting a highly rated English player with plenty of PL experience and an England Cap (and shipping out a player they're probably desperate to get of the wage bill) for £5 million more than United paid for a second division portuguese striker who has made a handfull of first team appearances.

Seems like a decent deal to me.

Paying £18-20 million would be too much. £13 million and a average striker is actually a pretty good deal for them. It's funny how clubs around Europe operate differently, Barca and Real agree personal terms with players before they agree on a transfer fee and yet Liverpool agree personal terms after agreeing on a transfer fee. Guess Barca and Real got their own rules when it comes to tapping up;)

People here are so obsessed with Bebe that it's not even funny. Some real idiots around here. Why not compare Henderson's deal with Evra, Vidic, Hernandez?

Would it look a decent deal as compared to those?

Yeah, but no-one has ever claimed the Bebe deal was a good one, and thus using it as a yardstick to measure other transfers by is just retarded.

Also, people have been saying Liverpool are paying over the odds when figures of £18-20m are floated around. If they have got him for £13m and N'Gog then that's clearly a much better deal

Exactly.

Bebe's deal was one-off, but yeah let's compare other clubs transfer deals with it to make them look decent.

I would not be surprised if Sunderland put in a bid now for Welbeck

I would have thought they have asked for N'Gog because they have failed in their pursuit of Welbeck. I Think they'll sign an experienced striker like Crouch etc, it would be a big risk to go with Gyan and two unexperienced strikers in the season.

I'm not obsessed - just pointing out a fact given the seemingly unending criticism of Henderson as a potential United player.

To answer your question I think it still looks a decent deal given his age and the fact that you always pay more from a PL club and for a "homegrown" player.

Anyway, where is this £13m + N'Gog coming from? All the journos/articles I've seen are saying £20m which may or may not include N'Gog. I don't think anyone on here would value N'Gog at £7m, and there's nothing about N'Gog in Sunderland's statement.

So if the actual price is around £20m, then I'm back to saying "they've paid over the odds". I mean Mancienne is an English U21 International with PL experience, and he just went for around £2.5m - sure Henderson is promising, but £20m is a massive gamble

Why?

You might not know whether any player will be any good until you buy him - but the money is spent regardless.

As stated above I made the point purely because a lot of people on here were very critical of Henderson as a player and suggested Liverpool were mad to part with decent money for him.

Also simply stating my opinion that I think they've done a very good deal in the circumstances.

Because it's like measuring all transfers against an outlier, a freak transfer, when they should clearly be measured against some sort of market average. Everyone, and I mean everyone, accepts that the Bebe deal was well over the odds (and more than a bit dodgy), so there's absolutely no point comparing other transfers to it, unless your aim is to say "this is as dodgy as the Bebe transfer"

You used the Bebe transfer in comparison which was a moronic way of judging any transfer.

I can say that we signed a French and Serbian International for the same amount as Liverpool have signed a U21 player.

How does the Henderson deal looks in comparison now?

"meh" sums this one up. Henderson is a decent player and when in a good side he will look pretty good, but he is definitely not up on the same level as the likes of wilshere. Furthermore, it looks as though either he or meireles will have to play on the wing, unless they are going to ship out some of their CMs

If the rumours are to go by we could see a bid for Brown & Gibson coming our way. Would make sense for a Gibson bid from Sunderland now.

And for Brown. A fresh start might be best for the remaining years on his career given the fact he's 4th choice for the right back spot.

I've not seen any great talent in Henderson so didnt want us to sign him. For Liverpool though, he could be a decent signing.

Honestly I'm finding their recent spending a tad annoying. Was fun to see them languishing in the pitts but it seems they're now very willing to spend fairly large sums and on players who are improving them (Carroll, suarez, mereiles). So they're definitely moving in the right direction.

Be it Sunderland or elsewhere, I think we can safely say Wesley (Brown that is) will be having a fresh start at a different club come August :smirk:

Double-edged sword I guess. Yes, they're spending, but would it make you happy if we went and spent £50m on Rodwell and Jones? The money they are spending far outweighs the quality they have gotten for it... £75m-odd for Henderson, Carroll and Suarez? No thanks.

However, it does show that Liverpool will be competing at the top in 4/5 years and it is quite admirable how they've planned their recovery.

Leave RedRover alone, he has a friend who is a Sunderland fan, who is the final authority on youngsters' potential. His friend rates Henderson highly, so all arguments about the price are meaningless.

Oh and I forgot Welbeck is a decent player at Sunderland's level

According to Sky, it's 16.5Mil plus N'Gog which sounds about right tbh.

now the 24 million that City paid for Milner doesn't look all that bad.

actually Liverpool seem hell-bent on proving in their own way that they be big players in the transfer market by spending money more recklessly than City

Can't agree with this. While Henderson is overpriced, atleast he has some potential and is young enough to possibly grow.

Milner was just shit and four years older than henderson when he moved to city.

Rubbish Milner was brilliant in his last season at Villa in the center of the midfield role and plus had some good international performances. City paid 18Mil plus Stephen Ireland in return of Milner. He could still turn out to be a good signing for Citeh.
