Night and day compared to Sancho’s mentality.
Having him in the team with De Ligt will definitely help us on set pieces in both boxes.

Played well, but he will leave at the end of the season and that means Yoro needs bedded in. Cant have this guy continue to collect 200k a week.
They can just extend on reduced terms with loads of kickers to make it up if he hits them. He’s not getting £200k elsewhere realistically and whether he’s starting or squad is reliable, rarely injured and causes no issues.

That's what you get out of a manager who's not a nutter. Oh they have a strong striker that relies on long balls as well? play Maguire, he can match him 1v1.

Should not be sold like so many want.

He's a very good player. Incredibly underrated. Not only that, he doesn't make a fuss about being dropped/rotated, and has proved he has an elite mentality to come back from all the disgusting hate he was getting.

Took a lot of abuse that could have broken a lesser man, can't imagine how other mentality midgets would react to the blows he has taken but he put his head down and recovered his career admirably. His performances over the last few years have earned him a deserved extension, which I am sure he will get.

Agree with giving him credit for his performances where he has had to carry the defence (i.e whilst being paired with your Lindelofs) and calling out the unwarranted abuse he got but ultimately this is another AWB situation. It would make for a good story if he can contribute here for some more years in what will be his peak years but it would be correct and smart thing to sell for some good money in the summer. He'll be in the last year of his contract and we should bring in another more dynamic profile of a defender namely someone with speed, physical and aerial presence whilst also being good on the ball.

Solid as tonight. This lads mentality from his last season with the armband, where he was literally booed by his own fans, to this. That’s Manchester United mentality he’s shown. I can see that he’ll be a big part of Amorim’s squad.
I assume you're referring to England fans? United fans have never booed him. There were some weirdos on preseason in Australia who booed him but the less said about the preseason crowds the better.

He's been tried in a high line as a part of a pressing team time and again with no success to put it mildly. The fact that he has performed admirably in a low block, which is the only scenario that he's properly comfortable in, doesn't magically erase that and neither is that an untested hypothetical. When Maguire has to cover a lot of space in front of him, he doesn't really know what to do and often misjudges the situation (either not trusting himself enough and dropping deeper, allowing the attacker free space or trusting himself too much and flying in aggressively before getting outplayed), which is what lead to all that Maguire memes.
In a back four, yes he would be a disaster, in a back 3 maybe not

He's never going to be worth anything like the money spent on him but he's been a terrific professional for us who has taken a lot of criticism that has been way over-the-top and mostly done a good job and showed again yesterday what he can do by being part of a defence that gave up very little to Haaland and the rest of the City attack.

Good performance yesterday. On a side note, it was wonderful to see him go charging at Walker when Walker went down holding his face.

The first time I felt he could have a future / part to play in this rebuild.

He is demonstrating to rashford and garnacho how a professional shall deal with mockeries and difficulties.

I wouldn't be against that but the fact is that a player who meets those specifications will set us back at least £50m. In normal times that wouldn't be a problem but with our attack, wings and midfield we need our resources to be directed t there in the next few windows and keeping a solid professional like him is what we need to do right now.

He honestly deserves a lot of credit for the way he's conducted himself these last couple of years. Another one like Bruno who has actually shown to have the right mindset and mentality, regardless of what goes on. Fair play Harry.

Nothing but respect to him, he was ridiculed by the majority of football fans including our own fan base, stripped out the captaincy, dropped to the bench and still never made a fuss, a total professional, never complains always gives his best.

He's not an elite player but he's definitely got an elite mentality, I don't think many players can who through what's he's went and handled it.

I for one would like to keep him for a role in the squad.

Of course it depends on finances but that's the whole point. Maguire is one of our most sellable asset and now at an age where he will be looking for a long and big contract. Do we commit him to another 4-5 years or cash in for £20-40m, use that money on a younger prospect and lower wages? I'm not sure how it'll work for FFP but I'm assuming he's probably good value for the accounting/amortisation. I like the guy for his professionalism and his performances over the years but I believe it's quite a straightforward decision. However, who knows, maybe he plays a blinder of a season and massively suits Amorin's system.

Not true though, right? Let’s just say we trigger his one-year extension option before next summer, he’s still going to be 33 by the time he’s “free” to look for a new club. What club would realistically give someone that age a long and big contract anymore? If anything, he should expect a big drop off in pay and prestige for his next (aka last) comtract.

I think his best bet is to using the rest of this season to prove he fits Amorim’s system in every way he can, so that he can get some sort of extension beyond his current contract with us, likely at somewhat lower wage (who knows how it works). If he performs well, I think this is a good option for us in the short term, too, as we may need to reinforce elsewhere in the squad.

All that said, I think the most likely scenario here is for him to stay on the current contract until end of 2025/2026 season and leave for free then.

Maguire would be 32 before end of the season no club would offer him a long contract and if we have any sense we wouldn't either .

And I don't think we are getting any fee for him either as he is out of contract in summer and if we take the year extension then chances are he stays and leave as free agent in 2026-27 .

For all the hate the guy gets and isn’t the right choice for the team going forward he’s always available and mostly reliable. Played very well yesterday and nullified Haaland and the city attack, kept it very simple and calm. His mentality is amazing considering the abuse he’s received over the years from fans, pundits and media and still turns up and performs is incredible, guy should write a self help book. Still prone to the occasional Harry Maguire moment, almost everyone in life is.

With McTominay and AWB leaving last season, and likely Evans (contract expire) and Sancho (loan obligation) going out at the end of this season, we are in desperate need for more homegrown players.

I'd say offer him a new 2+1 contract on significantly lowered wages (like 80k/w). It wouldn't be the end of the world if he doesn't take it, and it'll help with our squad depth if he does

Other than the performance, I like how he rushed to defend his teammates and call out City's playacting during the game.

What a turnaround he's made in his career, elite mentality, really good to see. Would defo sell if we can make decent money out of him but wouldn't be upset if he stayed either. So so good in the air when defending against a physical striker, Haaland didn't get a sniff. Could really play a role in the future especially given how much Amorim rotates.

He's always did a job for us except he went tits up the year after his whole Greece arrest thing. The fans just never give him credit because they judge him by his 80 mill fee and think he should be Van Dijk levels. If he was signed for 50 everyone would say he was a great signing. I remember arguing with people on here saying he was Championship level at best. What a fkn joke. And it's not just his performances. It's his character and leadership. Everyone's keep saying he's too slow then we get De Ligt and everyone is fine with that. Apparently its OK he's not fast.
Just give him a new contract. We need players like him in the team.

If the game ended 0-0, he would’ve been my MOTM. Kept Haaland quiet and loved his productiveness to come out for the ball. That habit of his cost us playing a back 4 but is a strength in our current set up when we have 2cb and Ugarte mopping up if he screws it up. I want him to stay as a squad option. Mentality monster !

He's gonna get plenty of game time especially considering how short the rest of our team are. How much longer does he have on his contract?

If he’s alright rotating I’d definitely keep him. A team with him and De Ligt in is very capable in the air and they’re both physical. In the middle of a back three his major flaw is covered. So many of our defensive players suit this system much more than a four, so much so k don’t know why ETH didn’t try it.

In a low block yes. But we won’t be playing a low block all the time - so there will be fixtures were Maguire could be not the best fit

He might have never been/never be good enough for us as a starter, but I will always remember him for his mental strength alone. Being ridiculed by every man and his dog for his performances, hung out to dry in the media without any filter, and yet he managed to take up his new role as a brilliant squad player without ever make as much a small moan in public.

Genuinely never thought I would be in this position but if he lowered his wages, I'd have no issues with signing him up for another year or two.

Top performance and if he continues I have no doubt he stays at the club. We need mentality like this in our team during tough times. With him, Yoro, De Ligt, Shaw, Martinez we have strong options in CB and can work on buying forward players next season.

The perfect defender? Does he exist? It’s hilarious how some think people think players like this are easy to acquire and at will. Delusional mate, never any guarantees.

Nonsense. He played in a high line for 2 full seasons under Ole when he was the first name on the team sheet. He was very good in those two seasons. Was awful in the Rangnick season and lost his place in the team under ten Hag but we played a higher defensive line in Ole's two full seasons compared to Rangnick or ten Hag.

Many slow players have excelled in high defensive lines at other clubs too. This is just a made up myth that Maguire isn't good in a high line. He's actually one of those players that enable you to play a high line.
