Future captain

Back to the Future 2 Captain.

He had a good game by his standards yesterday. Fair play to him. But, not a chance he should be kept beyond the summer window, especially if there are willing buyers available. Recoup a decent fee and move on.

Great to see Harry is back in favour again.
Any future contract should be no more than 2 years as it should with any player of his age at a top club.
I think he just loves being at Utd and would probably take terms that would suit both parties anyway.

Fantastic performance! The way City played suited him perfectly and he had Haaland in his pocket the whole match. He's made for matches like this where there's 0% chance of fast counters from the oppo.

He's actually been consistently good for about two years. Hope we extend his contract.

Tbh he has been our best defender since the start of last season and it may not even be close. Still not sure if we should give him a new contract.

He's always did a job for us except he went tits up the year after his whole Greece arrest thing. The fans just never give him credit because they judge him by his 80 mill fee and think he should be Van Dijk levels. If he was signed for 50 everyone would say he was a great signing. I remember arguing with people on here saying he was Championship level at best. What a fkn joke. And it's not just his performances. It's his character and leadership. Everyone's keep saying he's too slow then we get De Ligt and everyone is fine with that. Apparently its OK he's not fast.
Just give him a new contract. We need players like him in the team.
He started the season after his Greece issue very poorly for the first two months or so, but it ended up being easily the best season of his career. The second half of that season he truly looked like one of the best defenders in the league, and we were all hopeful that that was the level that he'd continue with from then on. Unfortunately that ended up being the exception and the only time that he was consistently at that level.

It was the following season (his third) where he just randomly went to complete shit. His fourth was largely poor as well when he played, but not the unbelievably bad levels that he'd been the previous one. Then last season (his fifth) he turned it back around and was largely quite good, and that's continued this season.

I think he deserves praise after being slammed for 3-4 years. Amorim’s new system will benefit him as there are 2 speedier centre backs who can cover him when balls are played behind the backline.

Talks on a new deal now? A wise move, back three suits him, plenty of experience. Plenty of room in the squad for him, British and doesn't cause a stir in the squad. When he was in woeful form his behaviour was impeccable (bar Greece).

He's suited to a three at the back formation and it's hard not to think we'd be better at defending corners with him in the team. I thought he was done here and wanted him gone but will put my hands up and say I can see him being a positive contributor for us in the next couple years. I'd extend him for 2 years with a team option for year 3 .

I think we should keep - the pressure (or lack of) of only being a squad player has done wonders for him, and he also seems more suited to the back three.

Really good game from him. He has been here since what, 2019 so his transfer is off the books now right. I do think we can still sell him for decent money and invest in a younger slightly more mobile version of him.

Ironically, we conceded from another corner with him in the team yesterday. And he was also playing against Arsenal when we conceded there twice. I think this (the corner vulnerability) needs more collective teamwork and training. While having a 5'9" centre back in Lisandro and a GK in Onana who stays rooted in corners, certainly doesn't help either. But he can certainly be a net-positive and I'm glad he's getting some form with the new manager and formation.

Definitely an exemplar for younger players on how to handle consistent criticism and bullying - the ruthless mocking he received in the Ghanaian parliament comes to mind

All signs pointing to a new deal and he’s earned it. He was written off abused by some of our own supporters but his comeback arc has been great to see and is a sign of his leadership and character.

Agree with giving him credit for his performances where he has had to carry the defence (i.e whilst being paired with your Lindelofs) and calling out the unwarranted abuse he got but ultimately this is another AWB situation. It would make for a good story if he can contribute here for some more years in what will be his peak years but it would be correct and smart thing to sell for some good money in the summer. He'll be in the last year of his contract and we should bring in another more dynamic profile of a defender namely someone with speed, physical and aerial presence whilst also being good on the ball.
I get those who want to cash in now. Not for me, though.

He's good on the ball, is an asset in terms of the physicality of the league, is fine with being a squad option, and his mentality is incredible.

As a squad option, we can't ask for more. There are soooooo many players who need to leave before him as he can still positively contribute here.

To be honest of he didn't have the turning speed of a tanker he'd be one of the undisputed top center backs.

CCB is a good fit for him. While our backline generally lacks pace, his strength in aerial defense fills a critical weakness of ours. He's also a natural leader at the back. I wouldn't be too disappointed if they trigger the one-year option, provided there's a plan in place to address the broader issues with the backline in the future.

Unironically, we did not concede from a corner.
Unironically, we did.

We conceded within 5 seconds from the corner being taken indirectly. KDB exchanged a quick pass with Gundo at the edge of our box and chipped a deflected cross into it, from which Gvardiol scored. That's conceding from a corner routine, ergo conceding from a corner. Statistical agencies and news outlets alike, reported it as a goal from a corner. It's not up for debate, really.

Bit different from the other corners we've conceded from as it relied on a huge slice of luck. .

He’s had a better year last year than Dalot, people just don’t want to admit it.

Yes he has but just so we don’t get carried away and lose context, Dalot has played (with Bruno) the most minutes for the past few years. Maguire is used much more sparingly. For whatever combination of reasons, we can’t seem to rest Dalot and when he’s clearly in bad form.

In a counterfactual where Maguire played week in week out, we might be here right now repeating some of the old complaints about him (slow on the turn, ambling too long on the ball, lacks incisive vertical balls like Martinez, being incapable of playing in a high line, etc..).

I’m happy to have him and renew his contract personally. We need many options at CB and he didn’t put a foot wrong yesterday and so far under Amorim he’s been great. Also very professional, which goes a long way.

He's out of contract, unless we take up the option we get zero from him and no one is [aying a decent fee to someone on his wages with a year on his contract left at the age he is

He's shown he is a useful asset to the squad so taking up the option allows us to concentrate on areas that we definitely need to address and let him leave the following summer when he's 33 I think it is

Well, luck always play some part. Arsenal's 2nd also required a huge slice of luck since it just ricocheted in off Saliba's back, really. But it's still a goal from corner that we should have done better to defend. As with everything in football, you also make your own luck to some extent.

I don't want to derail the thread too much. It's obvious to me Maguire has been better under Amorim's management and system. And I'm happy for us and for him too. But we have conceded more goals from corners than any other team in the league (8), with half of those (4) in the last 3 league games alone, under Amorim's 3 CB system. And Maguire was on the pitch for 2 of those (against Arsenal and City).

So clearly, luck aside, there's a wider systemic issue at play with defending crosses from set pieces. And no single player, Maguire included, is the answer to that. We can't put it all down to luck, if it just keeps happening.

Not sure what we should ultimately do with him honestly. Resigning him to a cut rate deal is probbaly the best option given his age and limitations.

He's the best fit currently for that CCB role. I'd still like to see us bring in a Diomande or another top CB prospect in the next few window but for now Maguire might be able to thrive there.

Just like with English Squad, he would excel in 3 CB setup with other two fast CBs. He is still a big liability in 2 CB setup.
Regarding contract, management should only extend if they think 3-man CB is our future if not I would not extend his contract (which is till 2026) unless it is on very very low wages. Other than Amorim, not many managers deploy 3 CB so if our management is smart they would wait till atleast end of 2025, to see if Amorim project is here for long-term, before offering a deal.

Didn’t realise he’s currently on £190k a week! He does have more of a future here now we are playing the 3-4-3.

Rather than triggering the extension, perhaps a new 2.5 year deal on £120k would suit all parties..

He's done fine but personally, I wouldn't be too bothered about giving him a new contract. We can extend it for a year and he's not in a position to hold us to ransom. Better teams won't be in for him and we can evaluate the situation properly next summer. We may be able to get a better younger CB in the summer and sell him then.

Sigh ... The corner was taken. It was a short corner. I'll agree with that. That's the corner done with. The next bit - the deflected cross, is, well, a cross from open play.

As you so rightly say, the corner was "taken indirectly" - we did not concede directly from a corner.

Saying "it's not up for debate, really" doesn't cut it.

Maguire had a very good game.
