Saved Ten Hags bacon tonight.

Our defence looks better with Harry in it and it's scandalous he isn't getting more game time. Martinez needs a break on the bench after these last few games.

Maguire has featured in 6 games for us this season and we've only conceded one goal while he has been on the pitch.

I've a soft spot for Maguire and think he's got excellent character and is very resilient. If I was the manager I'd be starting him at the weekend. Well done Harry.

Deserves a start against Villa.

Deserves a well done for scoring a goal.

Doesn't mean he should start the next game.

De Ligt has had a couple of bad games and all of a sudden Maguire should be starting.

He should be starting ahead of Martinez.

Slab Head to the rescue, great header.

Him trying to play an offside trap at one point when Mazraoui was oblivious was awful mind.

Excellent header but he didn’t play very well and was fortunate his stupid mistake wasn’t punished.

Excellent interview afterwards. Much more honest and professional than ETH, who’s just talked a load of shit

His attempt to step up for offside for their 1v1 epitomises why we should never have signed him. A slow centre back with no agility who can't run and makes horrendous decisions because he knows himself how painfully slow he is.

Good goal though.

Good goal. Defensively he was average but I would still start him against Villa.

Hats off to this lad right here. If there is ever to be made a shounen anime about a football player, then Harry needs to be the main protagonist.

Get's signed for a world record fee for a CB. Is made captain instantly. After a good first season, his form dips and he becomes an international laughing stock. His name is literally mocked in the parliaments of some countries. Get's dropped to the bench and stripped of his captaincy by new manager.

Despite all of this, refuses to give up. Puts his head down and works his ass off. Despite being marginalized by the manager, he still refuses to down tools and gives his all to keep him in his job.

What a lad our Harry is. Take a bow

Quite comfortably our 3rd best CB of the last 15-20 years behind Rio and Vidic.

Ten Hag not making use of him and benching him for someone like Varane is one of the biggest mistakes he's made at United, and there's plenty of them. Obviously, though, the football expert United fans championed him for it, and then we went on to play the 5th deepest line in the whole league with him and Martínez throughout the next 2 seasons. Oh, and he also played Martínez ahead of him, another comical decision.

The only argument for buying de Ligt as well at this point is that he's 6 years younger and he was a good value buy in the market that we didn't want to miss out on. If you compare them as footballers, there's really not much of a difference between them.

In return, though, with the decision being not to buy Branthwaite as a result, our only centre half who's good at dealing with pacey attackers and eating up large spaces quickly is an 18 year old kid who we shouldn't be heavily dependent on in his very first season.

Still think when he plays, he’s our best cb (on form I mean, not on paper). Seems to be the only one with any level of consistency. I know he’s rubbish really but the way the others are playing at the moment, they’re no better.

That period of time contains at least Brown, Silvestre, Evans, Smalling, Varane, Martinez.
I don't see how anyone has Maguire as comfortably better than any of those.

I'd say he's clearly the best of that lot, but that's a good group of CBs nevertheless. Varane's time at United and Martínez at CB are horribly overrated, though.

Has shown his worth time and time again, even when the narrative from opposing fans and fans of United has been to paint him as some clown.
Very glad he stayed and hope he starts ahead of De Ligt/Martinez who have both shown fallibilities.

Another very exclusive take. Desperate times I guess.

Scored a free header.. any competent player would do the same. A barnacle of the reckless spending and mismanagement at Manchester United. Changes nothing. Granted the other defenders have been poor but If he starts at Villa, he will be run ragged by Duran and Watkins. Last season for him before heading off to Everton, where he truly belongs.

The free header is only free if you place yourself the correct place. Hater’s gonna hate.

Martinez wouldn't have won it

our most expensive CB in our history bare in mind, as far as im concerned our worst signing.

Bought to be our Van Dijk pretty much.. transfer fee was an absolute joke and the lad is a pudding, one of the worst defenders ive ever seen at the club.

Slow, Clumsy, for a lad of his stature hes not as dominant in the air as expected, poor with the ball at his feet just genuinely no real great attribute what so ever.

The revisionism is ridiculous.

People have already forgotten his woeful piece of defending that gifted them a 1v1.

And his atrocious attempt to win the ball before the goal in the last game.

Scores his goal and fair play to him, he's had many worse games than what De Ligt and Martinez had last night. No way should he still be in contention as a starter.

Should start against Villa.
He should be Captain for the game as well because giving it to Bruno has been an absolute disaster...fecking loose cannon!

And this is why we are struggling for top 4 every year.

It wasn't a free header, he literally bullied his marker out of the way.

Think it was actually a 2v1, extremely lucky it wasn't 4-2.

I think Martinez' poor form should get him an opportunity, but imagine de ligt and Maguire at the back!

I guess the hope with De Ligt is that some of his poor form is temporary and that he will do better if he keeps playing. Not sure though. I wonder if he is really as good overall as Maguire.

Martinez will be fine, just a couple of dodgy games.

Ridiculous statement, It wouldn't even make a top 10.

Sanchez
Sancho
Antony
Mount
VDB
Casemiro
Di Maria
Schneiderlin
Depay
Lukaku
Lindelof
Rojo
Bailey
Darmian

Have all been worse signings (so far for some), and thats just post Fergie.

Gets knocked regularly, but one of the few players at the club with the right mentality.

He's not rubbish though is he
Well, rubbish comparatively to the quality needed to be competing for the league again. If he had pace then that would solve pretty much all of his issues. But lack of pace is basically everyone in the team excluding wingers and hojlund.

Like Fellaini, he's strong mentally. Neither were/are United quality if we're being honest.

He wasn't even playing well before the goal. He tried to play them offside and failed. Plus, he almost dribbled the ball out of play before sending a difficult back pass to Onana.

Interestingly enough, we got top 4 in both of the seasons where Maguire was the first name on the team sheet.
Boy... it feels like we are running in circles forever. Apparently Maguire is a different player even though we went through 3 celebration periods when we got different CBs in Varane first, Martinez second and De Ligt in third. Those Ole years will haunt us forever I feel.

He's defo good enough for a top 4-6 club, nothing more than that. But considering where we are as a club right now, even that's probably too good for us.

So yeah, stick him in the team.

Saved us with the header and played alright I thought. Super slow, but we know that. I've got a lot of respect for Harry to be honest, he has displayed his mentality time and time again which has to be worth something.

Was it his fault or Mazza's? I guess Mazza was slow a couple of times with the offside trap.

Maguire deserves a bit of praise showing strong mentality the last couple of years. He's not worlds greatest football player, but he shows professionality and he is ready when the team needs him. Was important multiple times already since he's been benched.

Enough players at the club could learn from his professionality and mentality.

Would be the most Harry Maguire thing ever if that goal saved ETH for another few months. Even when he does something good, it's bad.

In truth though, he's a good CB and if he'd been paired next to Rio back in the day with the rest of that team, we would talk about him in glowing terms. Yet another player that just isn't used correctly and hasn't been given the correct partner.

Looking forward to seeing Yoro, hoping he's as quick as I imagine. Hopefully we see a Yoro/Martinez and a Yoro/Maguire partnership before too long.
