Burnt out? Has to be something in the fact that they both players played the euros and hardly had a break. Yet people want to add more football

That was Shaw's first international tournament though and he's 26. Over his career he's had plenty of rest so burnout shouldn't be an issue for him.

I've always been a fan of Maguire but he's probably in the worst form of his career. I would stick with him though, he'll play through it.

Shaw on the other hand, it's time for another kick up the backside. He keeps making the exact same mistake(being too central) over and over and that's a player whose stopped being a team player.

Yep, his confidence looks shot and he needs a break- flipside, is that is going to mean a Bailly/Lindelof central defence with Varane out a few weeks. I guess we'd struggle to look any shitter at the back than we did yesterday though.
Yeah this is the problem. I cannot see Ole dropping him for those two, usually I'd agree but Maguire looks shot for confidence entirely.

Agree, this is ridiculous. Physically can't fit more football in that they have already.

It's a mix of being burnt-out somewhat and his confidence being shot. I think that performance in front of his old fans at Leicester was a really bad one for Harry, they were jeering him and taking the mick, would have stung him because he wasn't fit and was totally off it and making laughably bad errors.

Definitely needs a few games out in my opinion but I can't see Ole dropping him for Bailly and Lindelof in these high pressured upcoming games.

I have never been a fan and did not want us to sign him, let alone at the cost he was bought for, but this season has been an atrocity. He is a good player, but not great and the fact he was made captain really irked me as he had only just arrived, is not anything special and does not demonstrate any clear leadership or command respect. It is so horrible to watch him play with his ugly, awkward movements and lack of agility coupled with the inability to organise the defence.

Players like Rio and Vidic immediately made our defence much better and more organised than whenver they were not playing, but Harry does not do that. Any good he does do gets overstated for some reason, including his supposed comfort on the ball - he never looks physically comfortable and his passing tends to be smashing it wide left, or nowadays, passing it off the pitch. He charges up the pitch well with it but then just stops and passes 5 yards to his side or something rather than doing anything incisive. It doesn't even feel as though his teammates see him as a leader, as evidenced by Rashford having no qualms about calling him a nob head and Luke not even mentioning him amongst the leaders of the team where he listed Bruno, Pogba, etc. He, like Ole, never fill me with inspiration as a fan and that seems to be translating on the pitch too.

The saga continues...

disgraceful this year....

Jones and Smalling got dogs abuse but they never had a season like Maguire's currently having

Needs dropped for a couple of games. Those City attackers are going to have a field day against Maguire given his current lumbering slow defensive work

Yeah his confidence must be shot to pieces. I query why we’d rather play him unfit and lacking match sharpness than play Bailly?why give a contract to him if he’s not trusted to be an active member of the squad

Has he looked as clueless for Leicester as he has been for us this season so far though? How often was he making those types of mistakes?
No, but Leicester had a better defensive system & usually played on the counter which suited him. He still had those mistakes in him, but he wasn't forced into those situations quite as often as he is now.

Very clearly. His central nervous system will be fried. It's bad management that he played a record-breaking run of 72 consecutive games before the Euros, played a full summer tournament, and was then thrown back into action from the start of this season. He's not really had a chance to mentally reset and rebuild again.

He also got injured again and played right away. This was one of the few good things about LVG, he never played anyone immediately after recovering from injury.

I'm not a big fan of Maguire but feel sorry for him all the same.

Fair point. We’re probably being a bit harsh but he was atrocious. His bosses though should see that he’s not fit, not match sharp and knackered from lack of proper break. Clearly there’s a trust issue with Bailly so we have to play with someone who’s shot of all confidence and unfit

Are players still drug tested or at least breathalyse them. That performance from Maguire did not look right at all.
Just when he is won me over, he went on with a performance like that.
As much as we were overawed in midfield he did not have to be running around drunk driving.

Yeah valid point. I think he has to trust them and hope they turn up.

In his position with his job very much on the line he will probably bank on Harry, that just what I think he will do, being he’s his captain and all.

When is Varane expected back, do we know?

Probably before he’s ready too

What are you insinuating here?

Haha. like he was playing with a hang over. It was just a bad performance I'm struggling to understand.
I think there’s nothing complicated about it, he’s been shit since coming back. He’s not fully fit and lacks match sharpness and now he’s had his confidence fooked up too. This is on the coaches and manager

Aye, there's two mistakes. One is playing him when he needed more rest before returning for the season. And the second is persisting with him despite the very obvious evidence before our eyes that he is miles off it.

Unfortunately many players are in that situation. Maguire played 4245 minutes for club and national team last season, Lindelof 3950 min ( 3 matches less). This season Lindelof has played more than Maguire (club + NT). That means the player who should replace him has been playing a lot as well.

Then of course it can be big mental stress (and not mental recovery) to be out for injuries as Maguire was at the end of last season and now at the beginning of this.

In the end, OGS needs to rotate more than he does.

Im a fan of Maguire, been a solid signing albeit overpriced.
However it is clear the guy isnt fit, neither is Shaw.
They been awful last 3 games.
Please stop with this not fit BS
Maguire has been terrible all season for fecks sake

I'm not sure how you go from last season into the Euro's form to the current mess we are seeing week in, week out?

It's like it's a different bloke. Should be nowhere near the side currently.

Agreed. There isn't one game I can say he played well this season. He's been making errors every game. He has definitely been even worse since he returned from injury, though. He needs some time out of the team. If Ole doesn't trust Bailly, it baffles me why he was given a new contract. If he can't play a few games as a backup, why is he even at the club?

Maguire was very good for us in the 2nd half of last season. Those games he got injured for, basically everybody said he was missed. He was also England's best defender at the Euros. I'm not going to pretend like he's always been shite. He hasn't.

When a English national team player of Manchester United (Maguire, Shaw), a youth player (McT) or a combo of both (Rashford) dont play well it is usually explained as 'they werent fit'. When a Lindelof, Fred or a Martial has a bad game it is because they are shit players...

Also England has three at the back, Maguire playing well in a three at the back doesnt automatically that he should reach that same level for Manchester United in two at the back system.

The sooner he is relieved of his captaincy duties, the better for him and the club. The insistence to play him when he's clearly been one of the worst players for 4-5 games running, is costing us dearly. Form matters.

Agreed! Look at some of the newspapers in Uk yesterday. They managed to blame Lindelof for alot of it! Absolutley criminal when Maguire and Shaw, to the rest of the world, were to blame.

I do agree with you that English players get less scrutiny from the media.

England played against Italy and Germany with a back three. The other games at the Euros were a 4-2-3-1. England play that in most of their matches. Maguire has played fine for us and England in a back four. He is just in terrible form right now.

Never rated him, never wanted us to sign him and never thought he was good enough to be a starter for United. That's been confirmed of late.

There are some here claiming he's a good player and some even claiming he was 'excellent' last season....what games have you been watching, seriously? Granted he wasn't as bad last season as he has been this season, but it's near impossible to recall him ever having a very good performance or being 'excellent'. For some reason, an average performance by Maguire, is classed as very good by the British media and many fans. In reality he almost never puts in good performances and makes mistakes in the majority of games. I'm fed up of him getting away with it at this point.

He plays every week because he's one of Ole's favorites. Any manager with their head screwed on would drop him. He makes our whole defence 100 times worse due to his awful reading of the game. He consistently gets caught out of position, meaning the likes of Lindelof and Shaw get pulled all over the place, and have to leave their own position to cover Maguires mistakes. It's embarrassing watching him come out of defence to close the opposition down and nearly always get skinned, leaving a gaping hole behind him. I now see why he always wants to be the second man standing off and let Lindelif of Varane be the one to press or win the ball.

Apologies for the slight rant but he's useless. The worst player in our team and our biggest problem besides the coaching.

Maguire must be dropped for at least 3-4 weeks. We van debate whether he’s barely championship level, but whatever the truth of it right now he’s incapable of performing at the level expected of a United central defender.

The only thing Maguire might benefit from is a 4 week holiday to sort his form out. Might take Shaw with him aswell because that was depressing to see these two getting caught time and time again on sunday.

I know they are good players but something is clearly not right.

He started pretty well for us despite his price tag and last season he was one of the best players in his position and peaked at the European cup where he was outstanding. Take into account he had to play 95% of his games for United with Lindelof who is just a passive defender and can't impose himself on the game so Maguire often was a one man defence.

Strangely the drop in performance since the season started is so huge I can't believe he lost the ability to play football again. We have seen that in many top performing players last season playing week in week out, in all cup games too, dropping a level like Bruno, Shaw, Fred, Souček - only the players I watch regularly, and Bruno was overplayed long before the Euros started. On one hand it's the inevitable fatigue and on the other absolute lack of tactical knowledge from Solskjaer, obviously it didn't help to play 36 year old Ronaldo at the top, to have 0 pressing for the team to be all over the place so easily and being dismantled as a united.

So yeah I am sure he's gonna get back to his best because for two season he's been very consistent performer. We just need to sort out our coach and he needs to get back to his fitness, no surprise he was also so badin the last two games, rushed into games with limited fitness. It really can be seen.

Lastly some players mentality can't be as rock solid as it may seem, they can start losing their confidence when they see things are not going their way, and the manager change needs to be done asap, before permanent damage is done to some of these player's head.

New manager comes in especially if it's Conte, Maguire should be really worried.

Maybe, in which case it would be good for United.
BUT it could unfortunately go the other way. Maguire gets a new chance under a new manager.
