He's been doing similar mistakes at Leicester aswell

Has he looked as clueless for Leicester as he has been for us this season so far though? How often was he making those types of mistakes?

He needs to be dropped. I know Bailly and Lindelof are a terrible pairing, but Maguire has been atrocious since coming back from injury, and he was pretty poor before getting injured.

Thanks for the memories, but that is a great bit of business by the club.
Pays for other signings, and frankly, he's over rated, not anywhere near the same class is van dijk.
Time and again last season he was out of position or had no awareness of opposition players getting behind him in or around the box, and would put his hand up for an offside.
Being able to dribble forward with the ball was exciting to watch, but you still need to be able to do the basics of defending.
Sounds familiar

With the exception of 19/20 where our whole setup was to sit deep counter-attack, Maguire has always been a part of defenses that concede an alarming amount of goals.

People were saying he's in the top 10 defenders in the world, he's not even in the top 10 PL defenders.

Re-watched the highlights.

I don't even think it's hyperbole to claim that was the worst individual performance a player has ever had for us.

The amount of tiktok material he generated today might set a record for meme content.

Amazing how he's been absolutely dross since coming back, 3 games and 3 absolutely disgraceful performances. Yet he's still being picked up and if Ole stays you can bet your house he'll start again next week.

He is the Dwight Schrute to Ole's Michael Scott.

It makes complete sense that Ole would make someone like him captain.

He’s been off it this season, he’s not a terrible player like some will now claim, he’s also been a rock for us for long periods.

The same way Shaw has been poor this season, doesn’t mean he can’t recapture form.

But Maguire being so off it this season has really cost us in games. Looks half the player he was for large periods of last season.
Agreed, good balanced post.

We paid double what he was worth and he isn’t suited to playing in a high line, terrible acceleration and turns like an oil tanker.

When we signed him and AWB we bought two decent players but massively overpaid and both are suited to a team that sits deep.

He was good for us but I never thought of him as a world class defender. Too slow for a high line, always had that mistake in him and he was never commanding the backline. That you made him captain is insane.

Was pretty solid last season. Yes, there were few unforced errors but still he had very good season. What happened to him? Is he injured? If so, then don't play for club sake.

Was never my choice for captain but I don't know how important that is now and don't see the benefit in stripping him.

He does need to be dropped for a few games though to get his head right, too many players in the squad don't have to fight for their place, it shows.

I doubt that Ole will strip him of the captaincy. I'd be surprised if the next manager retains him as captain though. I'd imagine that Ronaldo will get it.

Our defense looking shambolic is no coincidence with Maguire looking like pub players. Him and Shaw were the better half of that 4 men defensive lines, now they are weak link and costing us goals on regular basis. Add on that his captain credentials and it is absolutely terrible to see.

He gets given too much leeway in the media considering he’s the marquee signing of what’s been a shambolic defence the last couple of seasons. If we get a new manager I hope he’s one of the first to be upgraded, sick of the excuses for him.

I don't think Ronnie should be captain as much as I love love him. He isn't going to be here long term.

For me, give it to De Gea, our longest serving player now and has regained his form whilst being a loyal servant to the club.

If he wasn't English she would be seen as the third choice CB

Maguire and Shaw stunk up the pitch almost every game this season, terrible season by both of them. Looks like pub players.

Im a fan of Maguire, been a solid signing albeit overpriced.
However it is clear the guy isnt fit, neither is Shaw.
They been awful last 3 games.

Maguire has been awful entire season. Injuries are just an excuse.

All these people bringing up his performances for England, I hope you do the same for Pogba when he plays badly for United.

1. England play with a back 3 and two competent defensive midfielders.
2. I am a Manchester United fan and could give a flying feck how our players do on international duty as long as they don't get injured.
3.Refer back to 2

Unfortunately he is a limited player. Ask him and the team to sit deep and sure, he is fine as he can use that forehead of his to clear 80% of everything that goes into the box. Ask him to do much else and he loses the plot.

I have a friend who has always called him 'the walking forehead', he says that he is essentially an overrated Gary Cahill in that he'll put his body on the line, look good in low block defences but fall apart whenever people run at him or is asked to start moving the ball out of defence. I thought it was a pretty harsh opinion but when you look at the evidence, it unfortunately seems to match.

Agree. He's been horrible so far and should be benched. However he was good for most parts last season. Last season started badly, but then we had a long stretch of 30+ matches where the defence was very solid and Maguire was one of the reasons.

He has a higher ceiling than Lindelof, but no player should be undroppable. Varane and Lindelof have looked the best pair so far and should continue when Varane is back. (We all know it will not happen)

Some players if they are not at the top of their game like VVD, fundamentally they are still good enough. Harry can't just stroll through games as any lack of form or fitness, he looks terrible. This impacts even greater if he's your leader and captain. On this note, it's like being a kid and being made captain cause your dad runs the team. He must look to the side of him, at Bruno and Ronaldo and realise that. He is not as bad as his performances at present but he needs to give the armband to Ronaldo who is use to carry the weight of it....

Yeah Ole has rushed him back in after the knock he had as well, I had a couple of chats about this at the time with other posters, the balance of whether to play Maguire or let him rest, he was NOWHERE near fit for the Leicester game and it was a bit of an embarrassment of a performance, looks like it's really knocked his confidence.

I'd go with Varane and Lindelof as well, give Harry a prolonged rest, ease him back in when he looks 100% ready in training.

He was shit alright, but lets not go overboard here

He was one of the best players at the Euros and was solid pretty much all of last season.
He was solid only in the second half of last season (same for the season before that). He was average at best the first half.

Granted, he was great in Euros.

Hes been terrible alright, but so have Shaw, and he was probably our best player last season.

These problems go well beyond any single individual player. If one player plays like shit, its a player issue, but when the whole defense looks like a bunch of mugs its something else

Yep, his confidence looks shot and he needs a break- flipside, is that is going to mean a Bailly/Lindelof central defence with Varane out a few weeks. I guess we'd struggle to look any shitter at the back than we did yesterday though.

Oh yeah, I totally agree that there is a deeper issue here. However, he has really been terrible besides that. Likely, the worst player in the league this season.

Obviously, he is much better than that. Though even at hsi best, he is way below Vin Diijk, Varane and Dias., maybe Laporte too. Probably around the same level as Lindelof, pretty much all Chelsea defenders, Stones, Evans, and a couple of others.

Harry's lack of awareness is really horrifying at times.

Once again, we had the comedy bump into your own player. Only this time Bailly was around to get the blame for it. Its worse than that though. He often has no idea where opposition players are. So often you see him move towards the opponent closest to him when the ball is out wide, with no real sense what's happening behind him. He's not the only one who does this, its why we have a frightening number of crosses played along our six yard box. However, as the senior player and captain, you'd expect more for him.

He has no grip on the situation at all. None.

Spot on. The one where he and Shaw don't commit to it...I can give Shaw some shit for it absolutely, but I expect the captain to take the risk and clear it up.

He's basically like a much less talented version of Jones, who hasn't had the misfortune of being made of glass.

He's a decent centre back but nothing more. He's always been limited by his lack of athleticism and he often gets caught on the ball. We vastly overpaid for him and we're stuck with him for the time being.

£80 million for him really is laughable.
