Hopefully a turning point from the ridiculous witch hunt our own fans have bought into.
He has been rightly criticised recently but there's a line and I reckon it has now been crossed. Booing your own players is a disgrace.Hopefully a turning point from the ridiculous witch hunt our own fans have bought into.
This is the gist of it I think. That Southgate leaves out other CB’s who are having great seasons whilst also saying numerous times he selects players only on merit, not their profile or club. Maguire has been a laughing stock all season whereas Tomori for example has been killing it at Serie A leading Milan and gets snubbed.
Get out.Hopefully a turning point from the ridiculous witch hunt our own fans have bought into.
There absolutely has been a witch hunt against Maguire this season. He hasn't played well this year and made a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes. But he's also getting blamed for things he simply hasn't had a part in.
This forum has posters going out of their way to say why X goal conceded was Maguire's fault, when there were half a dozen errors made by other players in the build up. It's embarrassing to be a part of this community at this stage.
Like Southgate said, every action he does on the pitch is analysed to death and no other player gets the same scrutiny. Even 8 second cuts from training clips are used to attack him. There absolutely has been a witch hunt against Maguire this season. It doesn't really make sense when he's not made these mistakes for England. Southgate trusts him and until he lets him down I imagine he will continue to do so. Pickford has had similar backing despite plenty of gaffes for Everton. Some seriously red-tinted spectacles are being worn in this thread .
Yes, it's all an agenda. Nothing to do with the numerous goal-conceding mistakes and full season of absolutely awful performances.
In fairness the insults and scale of the criticism is unfair...but him getting some flack for being so poor is not unexpected really.
the vast majority of people who go to England games wouldn’t know or care what some guy is doing in Serie AThis is the gist of it I think. I don’t think the fans boo Maguire for anything he has personally done.
I don't think anyone is saying he hasn't warranted criticism. He has because he's been very poor for the majority of this season. It's, as you say yourself, the insults and the way people seemingly go out of their way to blame everything on him. Some seriously red-tinted spectacles are being worn in this thread .

This is the part I don't understand. Maguire has been comically bad for United at times this season but booing him when most England fans actively dislike United is just bizarre. Why would the England fans boo Maguire? He always plays well for England.
Because tinternet has decided to make him a meme, so every daft sheep decides he’s shit and must boo him, rather than you know, looking at how he’s been an important part of an England side that made it’s first final in a half a century.
You can't see the difference between "some flak for being poor" and being booed or jeered for literally being announced in a team line up?Some seriously red-tinted spectacles are being worn in this thread .

Blame Ole.

So... he is getting unfair treatment.Funny as I've seen people make the same "no other player" excuse for so many other players. Almost like it isn't true.
He isn't getting unfair treatment he's just facing the reality of being under scrutiny whilst in extended poor form. Shock horror.
He doesn't deserve to be booed but he's earned the focus and criticism he's been getting.

If they were booing the likes of Mings, Pickford and Shaw too that might make sense but they weren't.People seem to be saying it's because he shouldn't be picked for the England squad based on what he's been doing this season, when there are other players who have played much better this season didn't get a call up. So they are booing the fact he's being picked on name alone rather than his performances, same old with England really
I think at the time, apart from it being very early into Maguire's career here, it wasn't that bad a decision. He started well and looked like a leader when we were crying out for some. In hindsight it's been a terrible decision because not only has he shrunk but we also got in more leaders and a bit more patience in naming a permanent captain would have been a better idea.Do you know who is truly blame for all this? Ole. I was a staunch Ole supporter. I backed his decision to push Maguire. But as evidenced by the last 2 years, to be Manchester United captain you need steel, skill and a huge voice. Maguire is lacking in all 3. Making captain was a disastrous mistake because not only is he being hounded for his failures and the team's, it's exacerbated by the fact that he is MANCHESTER UNITED CAPTAIN!
You don't just need the team's approval, you need the fans. Before him it was Ashley Young, who was boisterous. Tony Valencia, who was well loved and never gave up but not quite captaincy material. Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Vidic, Gary Neville, Keane, Cantona, Bruce and Robson in the Premier league era were all powerful figures in their own right.
Maguire will always be judged against players of that ilk. Wrong place and wrong time is his fate sadly. I feel sorry for him. Blame Ole.
He is under ridiculous scrutiny and has been since the day he joined. We've seen it before granted, but rarely to this extent. Since he's in a position where he will have a good game and people will literally pull out a picture of him looking the wrong way in one instance and use it to hammer him even though it is completely out of context (case in point, the ridiculous "no look defending" meme where in reality he was the only one of the back 4 actually doing his job properly), the same goes for the shite on TikTok where you see 3 second clips of things that ordinarily wouldn't be looked at on because they are normal everyday instances in a game and without context they are pointless. This has been going on for years now and even encapsulates the times he has been playing well.Funny as I've seen people make the same "no other player" excuse for so many other players. Almost like it isn't true.
