Gylfi Sigurdsson

I saw this about 5 days ago on an Icelandic site but I don't know where they got it from and I didn't see anything on English sites so I didn't say anything. It said the same thing so it's probably the same source.

Fantastic deal for them if true! I thought he was very good for them, and I'm certain he'll be instrumental in their bid to become an established Premier League side if this is true.

I'm surprised that none of the bigger sides decided to go for him though. I could see him adding something to almost every squad in the league.

I think it may be because many of the big teams seem to be looking for first team aquisitions, as opposed to squad players. He has been very impressive for Swansea though, and looks very capable of performing at a bigger club than Swansea, with all due respect to them.

Still seems a bit weird to me that some of the clubs outside the top 5 or 6 aren't in for him though. £7 million isn't much for a player of his quality.

He's not really good enough for the top 5 or 6 I'd say. I think clubs have seen other teams like Liverpool make that mistake with Adam.

Good signing for Swansea.

Well, i did say outside of the top 5 or 6 but i think he's good enough as a back up for the clubs inside of that. I mean teams like Newcastle, Sunderland, Everton etc that i thought might have had more of an interest.

Aston Villa needs a player like him.
Ever since the departure of Young, they don't have anyone with creative playmaking ability.

I imagine it's more of a case of why would Sigurdsson move to another club outside the top 6 when he knows Swansea, and knows how they play. That is if you think they'll comfortably stay up next year (which I'm not sure they will)

I agree with you. Spurs for instance could probably do with him for some depth and to rotate (and even challenge) VdV, but given 'Arry's rotation policy that would probably mean not playing much at all!

And I think he's a better player than Charlie Adam.

I agree, but probably not yet as good as Pienaar, who still suffered at Spurs. When we see how good he was for Everton both before and after his spell at Spurs, it begs the question why he didn't fare better there?

Gylfi may do far better, and it may just be that Pienaar didn't settle at Spurs, but both he and Adam have shown they are capable of much more than they have shown whilst playing for a 'bigger' club.

Baines had a big part to play in that. Him and Pienaar together were making more chances than the rest of the team put together at stages this season. Plus the fact that Pienaar was getting a free roam type role to drift in from the wing and cut inside at us too.

But i think Sigurdsson is too good to sit out on the bench and moving to Swansea shows that he is a player who isn't just their for the ride. He wants to play and he's committed to improving all the time even if it means going to a 'lesser club'.

Good signing for Swansea.

Adam was just a bad signing, everyone knew he was a hit and miss player who only had decent stats through sheer number of efforts. Gylfi looks decent throughout games so it's unfair to compare the two.

Last summer many posters here said that he was "worth a punt" for United.

I thought he could have perhaps done better than Swansea but I'm not surprised he didn't move to a "big" side. I like him but I don't think he's mobile enough for the highest level.

Thought Newcastle would have been the best fit personally as:

Cabaye Tiote
Ben Arfa Sigurdsson Ba
Cisse

Is a pretty impressive front 6.

He just said ahead of the France game "It's not a problem playing in a 4-4-2" because that's how Lagerback will play with Iceland. I think so far he's played everywhere in front of the defensive midfielder for Iceland. Central midfielder, right winger, behind striker, the striker and tonight he'll start on the left.

Hoffenheim have accepted Swansea's offer. Contracts and medicals and shit are still left.

For the sum quoted - could be the buy of the season.

Surprised other "bigger" teams wheren't in for him. Only relatively young and looks made for the PL.

Wonder if he might regret it if and when Rodgers leaves.

As much as I'd like us to take a punt on him, I'm glad he's staying at Swansea - hopefully he does very well there (when not playing us of course).

Could possibly see this singing fall through now if Rodgers is gone. It's not a good thing just having signed for a club and they change a manager.

I don't know how Swansea are going to play this year with Rodgers most likely going to go to Pool.

Seems like we're getting him in as the first signing of the summer. Has told Icelandic media he doesn't think he will join Swansea with Rodgers gone. And also, ITK #1 on all things liverpool just tweeted:

dont need to be a rocket surgeon to work this out but #lfc's swoop for #sigurdson is now becoming real.

Can't say I am overly impressed, tbh. We have enough squad players.

Would be a good signing for you. Think he'd do well at a bigger club. If it happens I wonder what it would mean for Gerrard. As far as I'm concerned he won't cut it against good teams in a deeper role. Suppose you could rotate the two of them in that attacking role. Be interesting as well how he uses Suarez and Carroll. If sig does go in to the first 11 than I would think he'd link up better with Carroll than Suarez. Then again sig might just be a squad player.

He's better than Spearing, Henderson and Shelvey. Should begin to start over Gerrard who is susceptible to injury and is getting on. Is Aquilani staying? If not then him and Lucas should probably start together.

He's a good player but he's the last player they need at the moment. He seems to be an offensive midfielder primarly and they have Gerrard for that particular role. They need a striker, two wingers and a centre-half before they start collecting squad players.

Don't see Rodgers signing him as a squad player. Clearly a big fan. Why bother his arse hijacking the Swansea thing if he doesn't really want him?

He said that he didn't rule out Liverpool, that his preference is the EPL and that he hasn't talked to Rodgers so far. His future is unknown.

If Rodgers bids and is the only one in the EPL that does so he will go there. But nothing has happened so far.

Pretty much. If they would need a player like him Rodgers would probably have put things in motion already. I don't think they'll be after him unless someone leaves. I'm sure Rodgers will use Aquilani. He's a fine player. And it's not only Gerrard but Suarez as well. He's likely to play in the hole behind Carroll like Gylfi did behind Graham.

I can't help thinking that Sigurdsson is this season's Charlie Adam, a decent player standing out in a small team.

I can see the sense of him being an adequate backup for Gerrard. Mostly because he has missed so many games over the past two years, we need to have a viable team plan that doesn't rely on him.

Other than that, we need a top notch winger, a striker and a top notch midfielder a lot more. With Gylfi, we'll have 8 central midfielders. And still need the top notch one. We're overstocked as it is.

I think Suarez will be used the same way he was at Ajax - on the right of Carroll.
