Gylfi Sigurdsson

Why exactly does the German club want to get rid of him?

Same reason they let ba and i think cisse go......piss poor management.

I am turning into a real sucker for this guy......would love us to sign him.

Yh wasn't he their player of the season last year?

Cisse didn't play for them (was at Freiburg) and Ba wanted to leave way earlier (he had an agreement with Stuttgart two years ago, but the deal fell through), he basically couldn't be arsed to turn up anymore. Hoffenheim are a bit of a plastic club and I can't blame players wanting to leave this place.

No idea why they loaned out Sigurdsson though.

That club has been a circus since Rangnick left. No order or management. During the winter break more than a year ago Gylfi didn't even know when he was supposed to turn up for training anymore. He said that they would just call him and let him know.

They sold a lot of their better players. Don't know what their policy is really. The owner spent all this money to make them a Bundesliga team. Maybe he's just satisfied with them just being there now.

Don't think arsenal or spurs would need him as they both have attacking midfielders already in Ramsey/Rosicky and vdv. Similarly I would think Liverpool would be looking at wingers as they have gerrard who'd they put in am if they went that way. Chelsea is a shout although if I were them I'd be looking at wingers so they could put mata in the middle. Even toon have Ben arfa. There aren't that many too teams who really need an attacking midfielder in the league right now. As I said before I wouldn't mind if we got him instead of a fourth striker as he offers something we don't have, has good character and I think could adapt to playing deeper if required. But it might be good for him to get a full season with Swansea in the pl just to see how he develops playing every game.

I think he's not top 4, good acquisition for Spurs or Liverpool.

Yeh I agree. I like the look of him but something about him makes me think he's not quite cut out for one of big clubs (no disrespect Sewelly).

I think he'd fit in quite well at Newcastle to be honest. If they kept hold of their players they'd look like:

Tiote Cabaye
Ben Arfa Sigurdsson Ba
Cisse

Presuming those players continue their form into next season that's a rather potent line up.

Well I said two or three weeks ago that Newcastle should go for him and there we are. They need a creative midfielder, Tiote and Cabaye aren't particularly bad at passing and stuff so it's not a huge issue but with a midfielder who could create something out of nothing like Sigurdsson they would move to another level. He wouldn't cost a fortune either and would fit in well into their policy.

I really like him (Gylfi) but Cabaye has been much better since we put him as the advanced player in the 3. Signing Sigurdsson means dropping him back into the deeper role where we were getting a lot of huff and puff but wasting his cutting edge.

I'd still take him though. Goals from midfield and a set-piece expert are other things we miss.

Cabaye would still do well in a slightly more advanced role behind the attacking midfielder, Tiote protecting the back 4, and Sigurdsson would be better at AM than Cabaye I think. Besides you need to buy 4 or 5 players in the Summer to make your squad bigger and formation more flexible, players like Sigurdsson would be great because they do exactly that. Knowing you there are probably going to be a few more signings from across Europe at good prices, have you heard any rumours about possible targets? Defenders have to be on the cards.

I completely agree about the making the squad bigger and more flexible, especially now we're almost certainly in Europe. I think there's something in this Sigurdsson rumour because Pardew has connections at Reading and spends a lot of time watching the Bundesliga, he also mentioned the player by name when he was asked about Cissé being the best January signing. However while we have done well bringing players in from European clubs this would essentially be signing a player who's already in the sights of English clubs. I'm not sure we're too keen on getting involved in direct bidding wars.

We've been linked to quite a few defenders now. Douglas (Twente), Yanga-Mbiwa (Montpellier) and the two Belgian CBs at Ajax. At fullback Pieters at PSV seems to keep cropping up, Debuchy at Lille and somebody mentioned we were looking at Boilesen from Ajax.

I think most of the links are just putting two and two together because we've been seen to be watching those games. We've got to be looking at defenders though for sure, massive weakspots in the team.

Douglas would be another Boumsong from what I've seen.

Douglas is more or less a done deal from what I've read.

He's got a beautiful shot on him. Maybe the most accurate long distance shooter in the PL?

Every shot seems to be on target or at least very close to it.

We're after him according to the Mirror.
He would be a fantastic signing for Newcastle no doubt, because Pardew likes the 4-5-1 formation.

I think Hoffenheim will want £8-10m for him.

Yeah the dutch market could be very interesting for Newcastle......players like Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Dost, Van der Wiel or Peters.

But it looks like Newcastle will have not many english/british players in their starting XI next season........that's always sad.

Of course Newcastle's transfer business depends in which european competition they're playing next season but they should have a big eye on free agents like Bosingwa, Kalou, Montolivo, Hoilett, Rodallega or Farfan and some players from relegated PL clubs like Fletcher, Jarvis, Moses, (Martin) Olsson, McCarthy or a lot players from Aston Villa.

Those free agents would mostly demand high wages and Newcastle won't want to go there - they've only just recently managed to get rid of Owen and Duff who mercilessly drained their finances for ages. Someone like Hoilett might agree to play below £50k a week though.

As for the relegated sides, Jarvis will be a good addition for whoever decides to buy him. I think Bolton and Blackburn will go too in which case I don't see all that much talent in either side. Holden and Lee weren't bad at Bolton a while abo but I'm not sure how they've coped after injuries.

Time for a small Gylfi update.

Gylfi Sigurdsson has been valued at £10million, as Liverpool, Everton and Manchester United all warm to the Icelander.

Swansea’s on-loan star has been outstanding since joining from German club Hoffenheim.

But the *Bundesliga outfit are now demanding a large fee for the attacking midfielder, who has blasted seven goals in 14 starts for the Swans.

Kop chief Kenny *Dalglish, Everton coach Jimmy Lumsden and United spy Martin Ferguson all watched Sigurdsson dazzle against Bolton on Saturday. Swansea would love to extend the former Reading player’s loan for another year, but Hoffenheim* know they can cash in – with Newcastle also admirers – and will sell to the highest bidder.

The loan deal has been controversial* with the German side’s supporters.

They still sing Sigurdsson’s name every week and only a major fee for the 22-year-old will take the heat out of the *decision.
That means the Premier League big hitters will have to get out their cheque books to make a move happen.

Daily Mirror

There are a few people in the world who are loved by everybody. Ryan Gosling. Raymond. And Gylfi. Everybody loves Gylfi. In the Guardian offices he has provoked at least two slavering man-crushes with his performances on loan at Swansea, and the Mill loves him so much that we always go to trouble of putting the eth instead of 'd' in the name Sigurðsson when normally we wouldn't bother with those silly foreign accents. When Haddaway and Howard Jones asked "What Is Love?" they already knew the answer; it's cutting and pasting an eth from Google when writing about Gylfi Sigurðsson.

Other people love Gylfi, too. Sir Alex Ferguson, Kenny Dalglish and Alan Pardew for starters; all three are considering paying Hoffenheim 10 sizeable ones to secure his services. Hoffenheim are Sigurðsson's parent club, an increasingly ubiquitous phrase that makes us slightly queasy for reasons we can't explain.

I would really hate to see him go to Liverpool; not just for the obvious reason but if there is to be a battle for his signature then I'd like us to show an interest. To me he seems like someone at the right age to develop in a number of roles of the pitch and justify his place in the squad if we are to let go some of the players many here think we might.
