It's back, the rumor. Fergie was at the Wolfes v Swansea match yesterday.

Ice man cometh: United planning £10m swoop for Sigurdsson

Sir Alex Ferguson is monitoring the Icelandic international who has starred on loan with Swansea this season

Sig missile: Swansea loan star has scored seven goals from midfield for Swansea
Manchester United are considering a stunning £10million swoop for Swansea’s on-loan *Icelandic star Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been monitoring the midfielder, who is enjoying an outstanding campaign at the Liberty Stadium after arriving from German club Hoffenheim in January.

United assistant Mike Phelan was sent to the Reebok Stadium last week to watch Swansea, with the champions set to face Brendan Rodgers’ side next weekend.

And he was accompanied by Martin Ferguson, the brother of United’s boss and the club’s chief scout.

His brief was to run the rule over Sigurdsson – an Icelandic international – and he was impressed with what he saw.

United are looking for midfield recruits after being forced to bring Paul Scholes out of retirement in January because of a lack of quality and injuries.

Sigurdsson, a clean striker of the ball, has scored seven times in 14 appearances for the Swans.

He also enjoyed a healthy strike-rate of 18 goals in 42 appearances during two years with Reading before moving to Hoffenheim for £7m in 2010.

The German club value Sigurdsson at £10m – but they may look to squeeze more money out of United if the champions firm up their interest.

He certainly is an interesting player. Great loan for Swansea but there must have been some sort of problem with him for Hoffenheim to loan him out?

M'Villa
Gylfi Sigurdsson
Hazard
Clyne

Its on!

Teams often loan out to help players gain experience. But I worry. This Gylfi is hardly world-class.

Hoffenheim are a weird club so I've heard. Let Ba go for nothing, Obasi is out on loan at Schalke I believe.

Remember reading something about the club not even bothering to contact Sigurdsson with an injury rehab schedule or anything.

For the right price he'd be a decent option. I can't we him ever forcing his way into the first 11 on a regular basis but in games where we wanna play 5 in midfield he could fit in as the furthest forward of the 3 central midfielders.

If we cannot expect him to break into the first 11, then he isn't worth signing. We should be looking to sign players who will improve the first team, not just bolster the squad. We already have players like Pogba and other youngsters to occasionally do that.

We need to improve that area more than any other. For me we should be looking at Sahin. I will be very disappointed if we do not sign another deep lying playmaker. Considering how much and how often we depend on Carrick, it would be madness not to.

We need to lessen the load on Evra, and Carrick, and bring in someone to energise, and dictate our play from the middle.

M'Vila is more likely to go to Arsenal. He wants to go there and they are trying to work out a deal for him.

Rather see;

Kagawa
Kolodziejczak
Clyne

Though suspect your list is more realistic going by past years

If we did move for Sigurdsson, I'd start to worry about Ando's future here especially if Fletch is going to make a return next season. Sig would be a decent squad player but nothing more currently, although I have only seen glimpses of his games at Swansea.

If we moved for Gylfi, i would be more worried about our ambition. We need first team players, not squad players and as good as Gylfi is, if he is not destined to be amongst the top tier of midfielders then i don't see the point tbh.

We already have cleverley and Anderson trying to break in and prove themselves, and Pogba too if he signs. So where is the benefit of yet another young unproven midfielder? We need an established midfielder who can come in and improve us straight away now, not in a couple of season's time!

I'm not advocating his move, just trying to see where SAF would be coming from if the little rumours were true (pinch of salt really). As I said I'd see the end of the road for Anderson here IF we signed him. That's the only sense I'd see in a move for him.

He has qualities that we lack. He offers us a different formation than simply playing 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 without Rooney as striker. I don't think SAF was there to watch Gylfi. That's probably just an added feature to his visit there. He was obviously there to watch Swansea because of our league match in a week. I'm sure we follow a whole bunch of players and Gylfi is probably one of them.

BBC saying Swansea have had a bid rejected for him ;

Swansea City's bid for Gylfi Sigurdsson bid rejected

Swansea City have had an initial bid to sign on-loan midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson rejected by Hoffenheim, BBC Sport Wales understands.

The Iceland international joined Swansea in January on loan from the German club until the end of the season .

The 22-year-old has impressed during his spell at the Liberty Stadium and has scored seven goals in 17 games.

It is believed the German club value the ex-Reading player at around £10m.

Sigurdsson said in April he would be happy to stay at Swansea beyond the end of the current season.

But Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins admitted the club will struggle to keep hold of the midfielder.

£10 million would be a steal for a top side.

I'd be more than happy with us grabbing him for £10mil, he'd be a bench player no doubt but he'd provide a useful alternative off the bench when needed. Realistically though we'd be better spending the money where it's badly needed.

Actually, in today's market it is probably right. I've liked the player for a few years now, remember in our Championship season where I actually took a deeper interest in that league he was the one player I was really impressed with. It's not surprise to see him doing well, somebody who's direct and a goalthreat from midfield will always be an asset in the Premier League.

Just not completely convinced by his allround game for the very top.

His accuracy on goal from distance is very exciting - and something that the team will have to work hard on Sunday to close down when he gets within range of De Gea.

And yes I still think we could look at him, with age on his side and what appears to be an outstanding attitude to go with his quality then I think a figure around £10m can be justified. Perhaps not the central-midfielder type we desperately need but still not a ridiculous suggestion imho.

In today's market he is easily worth £10m. Might not tick all the boxes for us, but would be a very good option to have in the squad I reckon. It's a weird one, we should have higher priorities but if the opportunity comes to get him on the relative cheap we should go for it.

8,2 million pounds is the price Hoffenheim is putting on him. That's a little more what we payed for Bebe and Tosic.

Recent midfielder purchases in the top 6+Liverpool who are regular players (plus Bebe)

Young 17m
Bebe 7,4m
Henderson 16m
Downing 20m
Adam 7m
Meireles 12m
De Bruyne 7m
Ramires 18m
Gervinho 11m
Chamberlain 12m
Arteta 10m
Nasri 22m
Toure 24m
Silva 25m
Milner 26m
Cabaye 5m
Ben Arfa 6m
Tiote 3,5m
Parker 6m
Sandro 6m
Vdv 8m

So out of that list going by the last 2 seasons he'd be close tho the cheapest players list. Even if we only go by our own standards. Definitely value.

8,2 million pounds... Definitely value.

100% agree. If Swansea can't do a deal, then some upper Premier League club is going to get a bargain - I hope him being a United fan means Liverpool wouldn't be an option :)

In terms of the second or third tier players we could be looking at I'd take Dembele over this lad every day of the week

I love the threat he poses. Right now we have very little threat outside of our wingers and strikers.

Having a decent midfielder with a cracking strike like him would open up more on both ends, they'd have to bother far more with closing him down, thus leaving room.

isn't that what we had with Gibson, who was decent but not United quality? (though,i dont know about this lad enough to give an opinion).

Sky Sports understands Swansea have agreed a deal with Hoffenheim to sign Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson on a permanent basis.

Sigurdsson joined the Swans on loan in January after falling down the pecking order at Hoffenheim and quickly slotted into Brendan Rodgers' side.

He played a key role in an impressive campaign for the Welsh club, but it was always unclear whether Hoffenheim would call him back this summer after a managerial change saw Markus Babbel replace Holger Stanislawski.

However, it now looks as though Swansea will be able to keep hold of Sigurdsson as they are believed to have agreed a fee with Hoffenheim.

It is thought the two clubs have struck a deal for the Swans to buy the 22-year-old for a fee in the region of £7million, which would be a new club record.

Sigurdsson is now set to discuss terms with Swansea and the club will be hoping to confirm him as their first signing of the summer.

Great deal for Swansea if they can keep him.
