Gun control

The news didn't make a big deal because he was member of a tribal community and only 2 or 3 died.

Oh please stop with this bollocks that because it was a native american shooter that it wasn't a big deal. For one thing, it was. It's been all over the news for the past week in American . . . where it happened. Plus, it's like the 87th school shooting since Sandy Hook. So maybe it's just becoming the norm in this country that is cowed by the guns rights idiots. If anything, it behooves the right wing and Fox imbeciles that this stays out of the news so they can keep up the gun propaganda nonsense.

Two recent incidents of accidental shootings. .

A 3 year old shot by her 4 year old brother after the brother found a loaded him in a dresser drawer in their house.

Former Major League Baseball star Jose Conseco shot off his middle finger while cleaning his gun.

That's easy to resolve the problem, prison for the parent and Jose would lose his gun plus any permit to buy a gun for a few years and then he would need to go for a class teaching how to handle guns if he wanted his license back. The problem here we have 2 sides, 1 side are the pro-guns who want the right to have guns even if is a missile and the anti gun with an European approach, no solutions at all.

No, it's not easy to "resolve the problem" since the child is dead.

It´s about time the people manufacturing and selling these killing machines so freely and easily should take, as right wingers love to put it, "personal responsibility" for their products.

Sandy Hook victims' families file lawsuit against gun maker

"The AR-15 was specifically engineered for the U.S. military to meet the needs of changing warfare," Josh Koskoff of the law firm Koskoff, Koskoff & Beider in Bridgeport, Connecticut, said in a press release. "The weapon was not designed for home defense or hunting. This weapon was designed to efficiently kill other human beings in combat."

Twenty children died in the attack.

"There is one tragically predictable civilian activity in which the AR-15 reigns supreme: mass shootings," the court documents state.

Adam Lanza killed his mother at home before driving to the school
"Time and again, mentally unstable individuals and criminals have acquired the AR-15 with ease, and they have unleashed the rifle's lethal power into our streets."

This is a problem I have mentioned before but rarely gets brought up in any new legislation. In many of these shootings you are dealing with mentally unstable people who never should have had the guns to begin with. Much of it goes back to the low quality and low quantity of mental health care in the US. Perhaps in addition to saner gun laws, if we had better access to affordable mental health care some of the people would not be going on these killing sprees.

But whenever one of these incidents happen we see a rush to talk about gun laws (from both the left and the right) but little talk about the need for more and better mental health care.

If nothing changes after Sandy Hook then it's never going to change. It's staggering how stupid people can be.

Shouldn't they sue their state? They are going to lose that battle, if the woman bought the gun was because local, state and federal laws permitted.

Typical "privatize the profits, socialize the losses" way of thinking. But then again, maybe the idiot who legalized assault rifles, George W Bush, should be sued. Right after the illegal wars and torture suits.
And drag Obama in with him for killing innocents with drone strikes.

It wasn't so much President Bush legalize them as much of a piece 1990s expiring. Besides, suing a freely elected president for inaction has more than a few hurdles.

Funny how gun sales after Sandy Hook went up. Vast majority of these people could be massacred with a simple knife from pawn shop before they could dig guns from their stashes.

Many are Psychopath's who appear to function reasonably well. They can blend into society without anyone suspecting a thing.

I saw this article the other day, 29 gun murders in 3 and a half years in London, a city of around 8 million is according to them "shocking" and "disturbing". 302 people were injured in 2011 with 12 dying, that's a very low rate of deaths to injuries. I have a hard time believing that only 1 in every 25 people who get shot die, It probably includes air rifle shootings and other none "real" guns.

True, but that was because most buyers were worried about availability of what they wanted should Congress had pushed through more stringent gun control measures. I myself moved forward a couple planned purchases for that reason.

You have nothing to worry about. The current administration have already failed so much it would be shooting themselves in already shot leg if they would try even slightly alter the gun law.

There are regions in U.S. were people still getting devoured by simply a random bear attacks. Apshawa Preserve lately or in October, a bear attacked a family in their house, wife didn't survived but husband somehow managed by getting his rifle and shooting the fecker near Johnsons Crossing, Yukon.

If you ask me, if I was on the husband's place I would prefer scoped M-16 over SIG Sauer like P226 or any other Walther, Glock... but probably I would like to have any 9mm also with me.

Probably. I read somewhere sometime that 20% of gunshot injuries are deadly. Am almost sure that was based on US statistics, and I would expect in a country like the UK the "average gun" is less powerful due to heightened control so the numbers could be lower, but 3% does sound too low.

Before the the proposed gun control measures failed to make it out of the Senate subcommittee, there was legitimate concern that Brady Bill restrictions would return. Between that and the three major Supreme Court rulings, any major gun control measure seems unlikely anytime soon.

Roll on the gun law debate.

That poor kid, imagine being told later in life that you killed your mother.

Those that are living in the States, are you permanently on edge about the amount of guns that could be around you in public places? You could be out shopping and some people are bringing their guns with them?

You learn to live with it.

Don't think about it most days to be honest.

I'm waiting for the NRA to say that this proves that everyone needs a gun for protection against blood thirsty toddlers.

But until then I feel awful for that kid.

When one thinks shootings in America are all too common to still be worthy of a thread, they find an even more ridiculous way to make us rethink that stance. First the 9 year old in the shooting range, now this.

Genuine question. Are concealed weapon permits common or normal? On what grounds would they be issued.

Flipside of that question is do people with a normal or not concealed weapons licence have to therefore have it visible at all times, eg in a holster?

Do you not even slightly concerned about it?
Sorry, never was the wrong word. Maybe once in a while at night I could be worrying about it, but 99% of the time it's not in my mind. It helps that I've never had a personal experience with any type of shooting.
