Geovany Quenda | Ornstein: Chelsea agree 7-year deal with option of a further year. Will go to Chelsea in 2026.

Can give out any length of contract, see Haaland and City. They can only spread transfer fee over maximum of 5 years now though instead of length of contract.
Yep, I get that if its an existing player - but wasn't there something a while ago after Chelsea did it with Enzo and a few others that prevented clubs from doing this?

Its basically a loophole with FFP isnt it by amortising the fee over the length of the contract.

Maybe I dreamt it!

What you’re thinking of is the ability to spread the costs of the transfer over the length of the contract. There didn’t used to be the rule that limited the number of years club could use to amortise costs until Chelsea started giving 7-8 year contracts to everyone. The new rule says you can only spread the costs of the transfer over the first 5 years. If you want to still give out 7 year contracts, that’s entirely up to the club, the rules does not stop you from doing that.

That's how it usually works with us. The moment the fans start grumbling they'll come out with some photos of a stadium set to be built in 5 years time or they will link us to some other player
True, Glazers PR book was literally like one of those wheels of fortune: set to appoint a DoF, assessing a New Stadium, hiring a phd to build out Data Analysis, potential Carrington upgrades, Looking into refurb OT etc.

It was telling how the media essentially left out re the stadium it's completely at the call of the gov to fund the broader development, it's not like anything is close to being confirmed.

Why?

It's pathetic.
No, your reaction is pathetic.

We've lost out on better players than Quenda before, and been fine. He's very talented, but he's only 17 and isn't really a WB. He can obviously excel there, but he's played primarily as a winger since Amorim left Sporting.

Chelsea are just mental at the moment. They're signing any player that show a shred of talent, offering them big long contracts that very few clubs would offer. They're owned by PE, which rarely ends well.

As soon as they offered that money and to loan him back we were probably out of the race. We need someone next season, not the year after.

And he's nowhere near as obvious a thing as Haaland was at 17.

I don't understand why people are acting as though because Chelsea have beaten us to Quenda that automatically means we're going to sign nobody this summer.

I think we should sign a right wing-back this summer but I'd argue that at the very least we have three positions (striker, midfield, and keeper) which are obviously more immediate issues for us. If we panicked and tried to outbid Chelsea for Quenda, only to be left with less or no money for a striker this summer, we'd be completely fecked.

People always freak out when a player we're purportedly interested in moves to another club but there's a middle ground between "we can sign whoever we want for however much we want" and "INEOS won't spend anything at all this summer", and I don't think this particularly demonstrates that we're definitely moving towards the latter at all.

Ah yes I remember all the times the club have unveiled a multi billion pound stadium designed as part of a government back wider regeneration scheme. I also remember all the times the club haven't spent and just linked us with another player. That's how we ended up as the highest spending net spend club in the world over the last 13 years.

Think so, think he’s played both sides though. Was RWB under Ruben.

I’m just thinking about the logjam in that area when Estevao and Paez arrive here, both also left footed mostly RW, though both can play 10, but we have already have an established left footed RW/10 already occupying that position, Palmer.

I do hope we start signing a few more promising English talents in the coming years.
Yep me too, we should be looking at Jobe Bellingham, Chris Rigg, Tyler Dibbing, Hayden Hackney, MGW, Adam Wharton
And bringing at least two of these players in next season.

The difference is that we are almost out of cash to do so. Plus our credit facility has been maxed out

I think I remember reading that after Ratcliffe injected cash to pay some of it off we could use it again but the club don't want to.

Could be wrong though

We have a real lack of English players at the minute.

- We needed a right sided wingback
- One of Europe's best 17 year olds is a right side wingback
- He played for our current manager
- We expected to sign him
- He's just signed for Chelsea

We're absolutely useless.
Haaland v2
Close the club.

I don't think your club cares. They'll move someone on, to somewhere.

Is this guy a left footed RW?

He can play either side. He's played quite a bit at LW this year for Sporting.

Disappointing but might be for the best for Ruben not to sign too many of his ex players.

Surprised to wake up to the news that Chelsea have got him and not us. I’m disappointed but I’m ok with it, it’s maybe not ideal for us to spend that sort of money on a player of his age profile right now when whatever money we have available needs to go into improving other areas and different age profiles.

For me, a RWB isn't a priority and I have already expressed concerns about spending a huge chunk of our summer budget on this kid. Sign a starting ST, GK, CM first and then maybe worry about a RWB (if Amorim is still in charge in the summer).

Why didnt you let him have his usual moan?

3-4 pages ago on this thread I posted that I was not enthralled by this potential signing. He is unproven and his numbers in the Portuguese league are ok without being great.

There is significant risk in paying 50m for him. Chelsea probably ok to take that risk. We aren’t in the position and need to prioritise more proven players.

When you're skint, and you make it publicly known who you're targeting once you eventually get some money, you're basically asking for some rich club to come in and gazump you.

I think the attraction was partially that he could be a winger/wide forward, there's a very good chance it doesn't work out with Amorim and so to have someone with potential to excel in his system and in his others is appealing. Regardless, right now we're so lacking in quality that we just need to sign good players or players with high potential rather than worrying about specific positions, every area of the field can be massively improved upon.
