Geovany Quenda | Ornstein: Chelsea agree 7-year deal with option of a further year. Will go to Chelsea in 2026.

- We needed a right sided wingback
- One of Europe's best 17 year olds is a right side wingback
- He played for our current manager
- We expected to sign him
- He's just signed for Chelsea

We're absolutely useless.
Haaland v2
Why?

It's pathetic.

If you think missing out on a player is pathetic then you're going to be shocked when you find out how regularly it happens to every club, including the ones currently challenging for the biggest trophies.

I imagine in United enquires with Quenda and Sporting it was the classic now or never (in the summer in this case), similar to what we did with Amorim and Dorgu.

Chelsea gave them a commitment for 50m and an extra season, we need to bring someone in sooner than later.

Signing or not signing Quenda in this case isn't going to determine our future success.

To be fair, weren't most links to United just wishful thinking and lazy relation to Amorim ?
50M for a young prospect when you have big issues all over and a small budget was not realistic or smart.

Dorgu can play RWB or LWB so we aren't restricted to only signing a RWB.

Kerkez or Frimpong would be ideal

If he was the primary target then it is a shame. But I don't think he should have been the primary target anyway, there are too many positions/roles that need filled with consistency and reliability before we start signing more kids.

Top priority for us is a striker. Chelsea acted quickly, fair play to them. We need to buy a striker and then see what we can do with the rest given the budget

I’d prefer Tyler Dybling to be fair, Quenda has huge potential but again unproven in PL.

Tyler Dybling and Amad would be perfect for the right wing back/right 10 options.

I do hope we start signing a few more promising English talents in the coming years.

I was never really a fan of him being left footed to play as the rwb, you need messi-level ball control to not get fecked by the PL-teams press when trying to pass it out if the players use the wrong feet.

On the one hand I've never wanted us to sign him so I'm glad. That's a ridiculous fee to pay for a 17 year old that won't join for 12 months!

On the other hand it feels like he was one of our and Amorims top targets. I think we are really going to struggle to get players in this summer due to our limited budget and lack of appeal.
That's the point. Players will look at us saying we're struggling financially and think we won't be competitive for a long time yet. Players careers are short and they want the best chance of success

No Ornstein said we were actively pursuing the deal few months ago
Oh okay, missed that one then. I think it's a good thing for you anyway, you need to rebuild and replace a lot of parts.
I'd be worried though if the United bosses were still thinking they can bridge the gap in one go and refuse to go through that "okay to good" players phase.

It's just a sad sign of where we are at now.

A lot of people seem to think that players will join us just because we are the famous Man United. It doesn't work like that anymore.
We are broke. I very much doubt we will buy any players before 1st July ie when the new fiscal year start. Till then we are sitting ducks

Ffs that is very annoying. He is more suited to a club like United. Chelsea have too many players in every position. When he joins Chelsea at 19 he won't get a sniff and will be wasted.
The way he will see it is a 7 year deal at a club splashing the cash to compete at the highest level. Where as we're shouting from the rooftops saying we're skint and struggling

For those who keep mentioning Estevão and wondering why we would sign this Portuguese kid when he is arriving this summer, Estevão himself has said that he is comfortable playing any of the attacking midfield positions but sees himself mostly as a #10 playing centrally if I recall correctly. Which is exactly what I think will happen. He will rotate with Palmer at #10.

The only right winger who I have utmost confidence will still be here in 2026 when this kid arrives is Pedro Neto. Noni Madueke is not top quality and I can see him going within the next 12 months if he doesn’t step up significantly.

So this idea that we’re stacked with RW’ers is simply not true.

It's so surprising that people don't know this. Shows how much media dictates what people think and how little critical thinking ability the average person has .

Every single club has payments to make for previously bought players. But because it's united and our fan base is hyper sensitive about anything related to debt, it's such an easy win for media outlets.

Football fans, by and large, are such an easy demographic to manipulate though. By and large they just aren't very bright. TalkSport literally run an entire business taking advantage of it, as do plenty of others.
The difference is that we are almost out of cash to do so. Plus our credit facility has been maxed out

Doesn’t happen in the real world

Do you really think we're in a position to splurge 30+m on a player we get for a year?

Yes.

We're also apparently in a position to build a £2b stadium and just last night on TV we had Berrada saying we'll prioritise our spending to improve the team.

I thought rules had changed over contract length PURELY BECAUSE of Chelsea?
No, you can still give any length of contract you like. The rule change is that now transfer fee amortisation is spread over only 5 years instead of the full length of the deal. Chelsea still believe the benefits of long contracts remain despite the front-loaded amortisation.

I wonder how United will spin this. Probably with photos of our next stadium that is set to be build on Mars in 2150

Gutted to miss out on a really exciting prospect, but I think the reality of where we are the money for him would be better used on a different profile of player. We already have a lot of exciting young talent at the club, so spending money on more reliable, albeit lower ceiling players is the smart play imo.

He does look like one of those "get at all cost" type prospects, but it is what it is. Unfortunately we need to play hardball over fees, and clubs are in a much better positions financially and in terms of squad make-up to go after this type of deal.

Not sure how much I love the move from the players pov, but if he is happy becoming one of Chelsea's financial assets then so be

The contract length is the pertinent thing, that's a lot of job security at a club that pays well, he's effectively set for life now even if he matches Phil Jones in injury days.

Why would we spin anything, it will only be a story in Sept 2026 onwards if he's good? By that time you'd hope we're generally just in a better place and, if Amorim remains here, it's not like there is only one young player in world football who can play WB.

Ah, so the five year contract max is wrt amortisation. Then what, if any, is the accepted max length for player contracts?

That's how it usually works with us. The moment the fans start grumbling they'll come out with some photos of a stadium set to be built in 5 years time or they will link us to some other player
