Chris Mason speaking on Newscast about the betting saga, saying the Gambling Commission investigation is wider than reported. He says there are more people being investigated than has been broadcast, but no official word on the scope of the investigation or on the names from the Gambling Commission.

It's the two in tandem that I believe would set old Hardie spinning.

Turning up pissed maybe just a mistake, they could have thought they were entering a public convenience, but making a drawing of a body part on the ballot defies explanation.... unless you include the sobriety issue as well!

Participating in democracy. They turned up and consciously spoilt their ballot. A million times better than people who just can't be bothered to vote.

Glad the betting scandal is cutting through, despite the minimal reporting of it in large sections of the press.

At the next leaders debate they get their take on the zeitgeist and ask whether hawk tuah is misogynistic and exploitative, preying on drunken women, wrecking lives or harmless fun, revealing men are scared of women expressing their sexuality.

You shouldn't. The normalisation of far-right politics will have disastrous consequences.

UK has not much influence. I fesr trump, yes.i fear a serious far right like le pen, Adf, even meloni that is normalizing it in italy after being far right clownish.

Farage is not serious far right is gammon right IMO

Nevertheless, i understand and i know what you mean and i sort of agree, but again UK doesnt have much influence and with brexit even less as we dont have farage in the EU parlament

The betting scandal pales into insignificance compared to this...

Government destroys £1.4bn of PPE from one Covid deal

About £1.4bn worth of personal protective equipment (PPE) has been destroyed or written off in what is understood to be the most wasteful government deal of the pandemic.

Parties on my postal ballot ...

Labour
Conservatives
Green
Lib Dem
Reform
Heritage Party
Communist Party of Britain

Tricky one.
Mine didn't have the last two, and included a candidate for the Workers Party.

I sent my ballot off this morning having heard absolutely nothing from two of the others. The Lib Dems candidate seems to have treated his nomination as a joke, with no leaflets through the door, no canvassing as far as I can tell and no reply when I contacted him directly. Literally all I can find out about him online is that his favourite biscuits are chocolate bourbons. https://whocanivotefor.co.uk/person/14417/dominic-ft-hardwick

It annoys me that people like this, from an established party, run and don't take it remotely seriously. The LDs have a strong manifesto this time around, but have no chance of getting seats with candidates like this.

I met my Workers Party candidate and had a long chat with her, and agreed with most of what she was saying. I think she'll get strong support here, but with Galloway as an albatross around her neck, she didn't get my vote.

It's fascinating in a bad way how some relatively small bets are a bigger story than issues like this.

April 2020.

Theres a global pandemic where nobody has any clue how bad or how long its going to be. Nations are scrambling to get as much PPE as they can from anywhere in the world and some are employing underhand tactics to skip the line. In that environment you buy whatever you can in whatever quantity you can get it.

The consequences of not getting enough were far greater and any government would have done the same and would have been right in doing so.

Oh please give over ffs. There were numerous reports of companies who were specialists in PPE lined up to deal with such a situation who were ignored by the government solely because it was a golden opportunity to funnel off taxpayer money to their mates. In many cases these were shell companies set up over night to overpay for completely unusable equipment. Boggles my mind that anyone could defend this.

Agreed.

And then, some of them sent photos of themselves on Yachts.

Hope Labour hold an inquiry and puts them in prison.

Except this case was none of these was it. It was a legitimate supplier.

This always seemed an inevitable outcome. How on earth they held that line so long is beyond me.

Doesn't matter. It's still an inexcusable waste of taxpayers money due to non existent planning and rampant opportunism across the board. There's no way they get a free pass using the old "it was uncharted territory" line. The whole pandemic was a textbook exercise in distributing even more wealth to the already rich and making the rest of us poorer.

Lovely story and everything but the COVID enquiry has already exposed that Gove and others were fast tracking their mates through a VIP lane. Their mates who had no experience sourcing medical grade PPE. Companies that did have experience, connections, logistics and suitable QA in the production line were ignored.

Your tribalism over this is quite frankly risible. Not only did a shortage of PPE caused by this cost lives it also pissed away money like never before and it’s the public that is paying for it.

I skim read the article. It seems this was one of the few genuine suppliers that just won the lottery with Covid, they went from supplying 8 containers a month to NHS to 800 a month. It was an already established supplier and their equipment was mostly sound, it was just not used. There are many other examples where this was not the case and money was funnelled to mates.

Yeah, but for the 10th time thats not the case here is it. Theyre a legitimate PPE supplier who delivered exactly what they were supposed to. Save your anger for the Michelle Mones who deserve it.

To your last sentence. Outrage over a shortage of PPE but now outrage for an excess of it? Maybe just maybe it's you with the tribalism?

If only excessive ordering with an existing legitimate supplier were somehow linked with a policy of creating need for other suppliers so that contracts could be given to mates. No the two couldn't possibly be linked.

There isn't a condition or excuse that would see you not moan about 1.4 billion in wastage if a different party did it.

They found it all dumped in a field. The local council didn't even know what it was - nor did the environment agency. According to the BBC, "the government previously estimated that £85m worth of PPE secured under the contract would not be used, which is approximately 6% of the true total."

It's staggering incompetence and isn't worth defending.

You live in Tameside then you know, nobody has a chance, only Labour.

I lived in another country in 2020 that was doing exactly the same thing. Buying every scrap of PPE they could lay their hands on. It's how the world was, it's like some of you have forgotten.

I can assure you I would be saying the same thing whichever government did it which is definitely not the case for some in here. The Tories made a fecking mess of Covid in many ways, this wasn't one of them.

Some bloke went to court here because he drew a cock and balls as his signature and banks/government authorities wouldn't accept it. He won.

Not sure he should be allowed to vote

I suppose if his cock/balls were drawn within the confines of the box and he claimed he did not know how to make an 'X', then he might persuade some of our judges that it was his version of 'making his mark'.

People who deface ballots should be banned from voting for 20 years, people who don't' vote (especially now there is postal voting) should be also be banned for life.
;)

(*If you are over 75 it won't make much difference either way)

No you're right 11101, estimating that wastage was 6% of its true total is exactly what a competent government would do. Can I subscribe to your newsletter?

I think you're being optimistic in Labour's favour this time around. All I've seen in local windows are posters for the Worker's Party. Previous elections you'd only see support for Labour and the occasion Lib Dem house.

Rayner/Labour's stance on Palestine will lose her thousands of votes.

I was pottering around Hazel Grove and then Ashton (lily's) on Sunday. In HG, I saw a load of Labour and Lib Dem posters and signs. Saw nothing in Ashton for any party.

Despite being the government's single biggest reliable supplier less than 20% of the produced stock was used. Add to this that the government's estimated wastage on the contract was 6% of its true total. Add to this that the stock in question was found illegally dumped in a Hampshire field and nobody seems to have had the foggiest idea what it was.

You're right to a certain extent, that this was a legitimate supplier, the gear they supplied was exactly what was asked for and was completely up to scratch. But it ignores the context of what went on completely. If all the contracts had been like this one, with legitimate companies and decent gear, but was just over ordered then I don't think many people would be too cross, especially if the government had been honest about it.

But the context is very different, billions were given to the Michelle Mones of this world in dodgy contracts that were not scrutinused on equipment that could never be used and would put people's lives at risk.

Then we find out that a company that could deliver the right stuff, delivered over 2 billion pieces of PPE but only 232 million (10%) of them ever made it to the NHS, while according to the government only 85 million pounds worth wasn't used, a clear lie. Worse than that, it's not the government admitting it the mistake, it took independent journalists 6 months to discover that actually it was more than billion quids worth that was wasted. So even a good contract with a reputable company was completely fecked up and lied about.

Since then the government has repeatedly told nurses, doctors etc that there is no more money, but as Wes Streeting (who I don't often agree with) has pointed out this is the salary for 37,000 nurses.

I don't think anyone has forgotten what is was like at the time and there's no tribalism here, it is just one more lie exposed in what was a monumental feck up and an atrociously wasteful give away of tax payers money.
