The demographics are changing there and I'm pretty sure a lot of people want new blood. I'm often in Hackney and it's changed a lot. Funnily enough London Labour website still has Shaheen as Chingford candidate but no events planned yet for the new selection. I'm going along to see Faiza this evening to hear what she has to say.

So not about winning at all then.

If Faiza runs as an independent, and she is very entitled to I think, duncan smith will win. I'm sure people will blame her for that, but again, this is all self inflicted, no reason to do what they did and create this probnlem.

That makes no sense at all really, does it.

Diane Abbot had the biggest Labour majority in the country. If it was about winning, the surest guaranteed seat they could have was leaving her to represent the same people that voted her in, last time with 30,000+ majority and 80% of the vote, for over 30 years.
I would like her to stand as an independent and join with Corbyn to start a new party. I'm not from London but lots of people on here have said how popular they both are in their constituencies, so they should win. It would be good to have a choice between Labour and an actual party further to the left.

I don't think she has the gravitas or the charisma to mount a serious challenge on her own. I'm looking forward to seeing the new candidate to see if she's any better.

I think they would be as successful as the original Gang of Four

Former Conservative MP Aaron Bell, who represented Newcastle-under-Lyme, has announced “with a very heavy heart” that he will not be standing at the general election.

Bell has elected in 2019 and has acted as an assistant whip since November 2023. In 2022 he was vocal with his criticism of then-prime minister Boris Johnson over partygate, saying “The breach of trust that the events in Downing Street represent, and the manner in which they have been handled, makes [Johnson’s] position untenable.”

Starmer took questions after his speech on green energy in Scotland. Here is GB News contribution:

Chris Hope of GB News asks Keir Starmer “What if the wind stops blowing? Will the lights turn off?”

if they just commit to burning the poor and immigrants as fuel, then our energy source will never run dry.

I stuck with Labour through that but I was tempted. Bleak years indeed.

John Cleese doing party political broadcasts pleading for PR, Labour in the doldrums and Thatcher and co running riot. At least Spitting Image was fantastic.

Faiza Shaheen has released a statement. I got it as a jpg. It is in a quote as the image is very large (and I am not sure how to re-size it).

Disgraceful treatment.

Not to mention an own goal by Starmer. It looked like she had worked tirelessly to finally give the constituency a Labour MP only for them to essentially sabotage those efforts just to appease the Israeli apologists.

How do we spin this one then? Just another tankie anti-semite that Labour needed to bin to ensure electability? Despite the fact they've probably gifted another term to IDS.

The new candidate is an asian single mother, ex-teacher with more experience of being in office. It's going to be hard for Faiza to denigrate her selection and claim racism, sexism or anything else. The only thing is Tatler is not from the constituency unlike Faiza, but then again neither is IDS and it never held him back.

She is the co-chair of Labour to Win, the vehicle ran by Luke Akehurst and funded by Lord Sainsbury, the tory doner.

Pretty much guaranteed that Faiza will bring up her actual politics and her being parachuted in from the other side of London, after she failed to secure a seat in her own area. You probably don;t think so, but my guess is that locally, it will be very effective, even if national media largely ignore it.

Well I'm keeping an open mind until I hear what Tatler is all about. The few people I talked to going door-to-door who were unsure about the vote were mostly being influenced by Reform and buying into the immigrant nonsense. I don't think they give much of a shit about Gaza. I'm expecting Tatler to be less vocal about Gaza and perhaps a little more discreet.

Possibly.

Faiza is no fool though, and I suspect she will use the fact that tatler tried to get herself the seat in Brent and failed, and now is here. I am sure that her being blocked and luke's friend now able to stand as an MP is not a coincidence, and Faiza will, if she has any ambition to win, say so herself.

In my experience of political canvassing, something overtly unfair will stick with potential voters.

Nah - neither would win a seat.

I think they are assuming that it will all blow over in a week. Honestly some of the people I talked to didn't even know there was an election going on. Too many people make the mistake of thinking that everyone follows this shit as closely as political junkies.

There are things going on behind the scenes here in London that you wouldn't believe. The stuff I've heard about Sam Tarry is juicy.

Excellent, this is a really good move as it immediately ends all this guff about purging the left. She'll win and should get a decent job as reward. Can she be trusted not to feck up again though?
The article about racism aside, what has she actually fecked up any more than any other MP has fecked up? The difference is the hysteria that gets created when she does misspeak.

The media, Tories and some in the Labour Party wanted her to resign over the police figures mishap despite it being the last interview of a busy day when she’d already got the figures right in a dozen interviews before. That same week there was a Tory female MP who rather than being out by thousands on her figures, was out by several billion and nobody batted an eyelid.

Diane Abbott 'free' to stand for Labour at general election, Sir Keir Starmer says
https://news.sky.com/story/diane-ab...neral-election-sir-keir-starmer-says-13145531

Make no mistake, people in labour wanted her gone. Not sure if it were starmer himself, but the right wingers on the NEC all wanted rid of her.

That hes backed down on that shows that this was not a non story, and applying pressure works. That is why having indpendent left, greens and other parties in westminster will make life for all of us better under a starmer government. Give him 400+ seats, and he will not moderate anything.

Correct. I do think this is hurting them in the fact that it's dominated the news cycle, and the sense of Labour's campaign being in chaos is being allowed to run (particularly as the election is so dry/ uneventful), but the selection 'drama' will be a complete non-factor a month from now. The calculation of pain now vs. a more united party for the parliament is what they've bet on. I think they've been far too ruthless, but they might still be making the right call on that choice.

Corbyn will win his seat easily.

Abbot would too. Happily, now she doesn't have to.
Surprised to see that he's favourite with the bookies. I think the Labour brand would outweigh his meaningfully. What odds will you offer me if you're that confident?

I'll report on her rally tonight outside of Highams Park Tesco. I'm happy about this because I need to pick up some groceries anyway.

In fairness, Grinner has posted a bunch of times today about how Peter Kyle giving two different web addresses for people to view the details of Great British Energy on GMB earlier (and them both being wrong) is proof that he's an idiot who shouldn't be representing the party and that he should be removed for a better quality of candidate.

Its corbyn country. The people there have voted for him for 40 years. You cannot walk down a single street in the artea and not find people he has helped. He got around 35% of the vote the first time he won. It was over 60% last time.

Thats all him, not the party.

The surprising thing is people think it is not.

I've spent a lot of my life in Islington, I know it well. We shall see! My bet is similar to what Grinner said above, and that people are less politically minded than any of us would think, and even in the seat of a former Labour leader (and note, a historically unpopular one), the majority won't pay too much attention to intra-party squabbles, and pick the Labour candidate, whoever it is. Will be an interesting test case for this type of question.

I guess you're reply means you're not a betting man? :)

I was sure you were living in Florida (unless I'm mistaken). When did you move back?

Can state convictions be pardoned in any way - say by local judges? Or has the constitution blocked that possibility?

I left California 4 years ago although I'll still send in my vote for Trump in November.
Ahh fair . Not sure if it was you, but I vaguely remember you being on US local news describing the issue of wild snakes attacking your dogs. Not sure why that stuck with me

haha that was indeed me. There's another one of me when I was jury foreman on a murder trial too.

Tories say Starmer is losing control of the Labour Party

The Conservative Party has swiftly reacted to Keir Starmer saying Diane Abbott is "free to go forward" as a Labour candidate - they say he is "losing control" of his party.

"Angela Rayner is pushing Keir Starmer around. Under pressure, he's showing he's a weak leader who's losing control of the Labour Party," a Tory spokesperson said in a statement.

"That makes it even clearer that you don't know what you're going to get if Keir Starmer becomes Prime Minister – apart from higher taxes on you and your family," the statement added.

Momentum, a left-wing Labour campaign group, also reacted, writing on social media: "You come at the queen, you better not miss. Diane Abbott has been bullied & abused her whole career. Starmer tried to force her out. She held firm - and won."

The group writes that Abbott being allowed to stand is "a huge victory" but that "Starmer's appalling treatment of Diane is just one case among many", mentioning Faiza Shaheen, a Labour candidate who was barred from standing earlier this week.

Starmer took questions after his speech on green energy in Scotland. Here is GB News contribution:

Chris Hope of GB News asks Keir Starmer “What if the wind stops blowing? Will the lights turn off?”
"Thinking hard for Hop Hop but will ask first thing come to head. Hop Hop want eat energy nom nom like fat dragon, not eat nom nom like small bird. Why Starmer hate Britain?"

But none of those were left wing by any meaningful metric either. All authoritarian dictatorships with no actual equality involved. Adding the word socialist to a countries title doesn't make it so.
What? So the nazis weren't socialists?
