Gary Neville

I agreed with Neville on the possible sending off, stupid from Martinez and could have had no complaints had he been sent off.

Genuinely awful commentary today, I'm usually impartial to Neville but he was so negative about any aspect of United. Like another poster mentioned it's like the ex United players are stuck looking through the lens of the United teams they used to play in, and anything outside of that just isn't good enough when reality is 15-20 years ahead of them.

Also hearing Neville half way through the match bang on about how we had no structure or patterns of play, how our press is disorganized and our team is the easiest to play through in the entire PL for the 100th time is just quite frankly boring.

All these ex-Utd pundits' schtick is to just endlessly point out negatives to massage their own egos about how good they used to be.

he has his views on football and football players largely based on are they English or not and he’s not going to let what happens on the pitch change them

Even if he wasn't using every breath to spin some kind of narrative (how shit United are, how good this English player is, how bad this foreign player is), he's just fecking miserable on comms. He's like Mark Lawrenson without the dry witticisms.

That basically makes him Danny Murphy, doesn't it?

If Maguire made the same tackles as De Ligt he'd change from "he's uncomfortable" to "he's made a superb block".

It is amazing he gets paid for this shit. Just don't put him on United games at least. First 45 - 60 minutes of the game were generally bad and with him there you wish to turn it off. Because he can't crack a joke to save his life and adds zero tactical insight, so he just sucks every little bit of joy left out of it.

And then there is his usual 'not wanting to look like am cheering for United' which results in over hyperbolic nonsense to top it all of. If United gets lively which we did towards the end he suddenly goes quiet to not let any sound which would disguise him and only thing he can produce by the tone of his voice is almost an apology we created a chance, got a penalty or scored.

Just a proper shitshow from whichever angle you look at it.

I was surprised at that too. It was incredibly bizarre to bring that stuff up today when we are under an inexperienced interim manager.

Was he really expecting an organised press and well drilled patterns of play under Ruud, when we've not seen that over the past two seasons?

I don't mind him being negative or a bit biassed, or emotional, but he takes it to the point where he doesn't even do his job, and he also suffers from the inability to moan about anything without being really annoying.

If it's a one off, ok, but he does it nearly every time he's on commentary. He gets tunnel vision aboit whatever his personal agenda is for that particular game, then spends all of it ramming it down everyone's throats.

Chelsea might as well not have been on the pitch. At one point Garnacho was through and was flagged offside despite clearly being in his own half and Neville completely ignored it to carry on moaning about how rubbish man utd are. He's supposed to be commentating on the fecking game. If I want some obnoxious twat's pointless opinions that have nothing to do with the game at all, I can read my own posts on here.

Either sky need to start including a "Neville off" button on their tv remotes or they need to remove him from commentary because it actually makes the games harder to enjoy.

It seems like it, along with most of the match day thread.... baffling

What did he say?
I believe the words "busy cnuts" were used in his autobiography to describe the Neville brothers. He did admit years later that it was not meant to be as abusive as it may have come across.

He did seem a bit OTT today. Normally I'd agree with him on how bad we are by what he's seen and played under will be unrecognizable while some of the top teams will show the quality we don't have. It felt more like digs for the sake of it and quite tiresome to listen to as Chelsea weren't any better.

Utterly ridiculous, nothing in that Martinez tackle he slips and there’s no force in it. It’s never a red card. Yet to Garry it’s definite red

It’s not that deep with Neville, he’s just a little fecking drama queen - Jaap was spot on.

I get how the commentary comes across as overly negative towards us if you’re a United fan but if you watch him on the Overlap or even MNF he’s normally in our corner, to a fault almost.

He just loves the fecking drama hence his ridiculous live takes while commentating.

The other constant other than drama is just basically talking a lot of shite. He’s more eloquent than the likes of Scholes and talks a lot more and with greater confidence but he’s on about the same intellectual plane as most footballers.

Yeh, I kinda agreed that was borderline red, and wouldn't surprise if he were off.

Same as what happened with Bruno against Spurs, that day the ref and VAR wrongly gave a red card and it was downgraded to a yellow card days later. Gary Neville must have short term memory loss.

Luis Enrique was right to ignore him. A stubborn know it all biased insecure coward.

I don't get who he panders to with the constant going against United in the commentary. Is it the neutrals? The rival fans?

Carragher commentates on the Liverpool games and he cannot hide the bias.

Not sure why Neville is the opposite, like he just hates the team.

He's good at analysis on MNF and such, but a godawful commentator - especially when covering United games. I'm not listening to him when he's on our games again.

Media are out of control with their coverage of United. Repeated “horror tackle” references ad nauseum. I’ll be surprised if Palmer isn’t playing Chelsea’s next game as a result of this. Besides, it wasn’t remotely horrific. Where were they when Andy Carrol was on a one man mission to repeatedly injure United players with his efforts on De Gea, Eriksen and Casemiro? They were horrific attempts, intended purely intended to injure players, yet not a whisper in the media nor any action from officials. He would’ve been arrested for assault had he been caught on the street in public .

Aside from what he says, his voice is terrible for commentary and adding that extra gravity to big moments in games, they’ve never replaced Andy Gray on that front

It does make me chuckle reading this regularly on here about Neville considering the absolute bile that we, the premier United supporters forum, spew daily about the team and everyone connected to it.

Why wouldn't that annoy people? Especially when his "brand" is exploiting the drama around United. Are we supposed to be like; "Clever lad, Gary. Well done."?
Why even bother with him, you know what you are going to get. Mute the fecker.

He did a walk and talk with Rebecca Lowe the other day and talked about his career choices and there seems to be some likelihood that he will be calling time on his commentating in the near future. He talked about not wanting to do any one thing for too long and that is why he is not doing the analyst stuff on MNF now and is pouring more energy into the podcasts. Fingers crossed he means it.

Still don't get why he pisses so many off. He has a brand and is working it.
Because it's a hard enough chore watching united without him every game going on about how shit we are, in this game one that was actually quite even that we probably should have won. That and making a big deal about nothing incidents and creating talking points as if we were fortunate to get away without penalties/red cards etc

Because he's just relentlessly negative about Manchester United to the point that he'll take a stance on something that happens in one of our games, blaming whichever of our players was involved for it, and will maintain that stance even when presented with evidence to the contrary.

Case in point yesterday was Onana being body-checked by Colwill.

Onana tried to run out and make a quick throw, there was a coming together, and Neville instantly claimed that he simply ran into the Chelsea players. We then saw a replay of Colwill clearly deliberately stepping across Onana, and Neville just went, "Yeah, he's just ran into them. I'm not sure where the Chelsea players were supposed to go."

I can’t understand you all complaining that he’s constantly reminding us how shite Utd currently are.
Nearly everybody on here is making the same sort of noises, every day.
In fairness, he does keep rubbing it in, but it’s not like he’s wrong !
