Gary Neville

Our Gary was the lead Kane cheerleader this entire tournament, even as going as far to say he was the greatest England player ever(!)

I mean it looks silly now, but saying before the tournament that Cucharella isn't great/is a weak link is hardly a crazy take.
For a typical fan who doesn't watch much football, it's not an unexpected take.

For someone paid well as an expert, it was laughable.

He didn't say that *he isn't great", he said he would be the reason they wouldn't win. Big difference.

Gary has become a caricature, An unchecked hyperbole machine and he plays the role well. It doesn’t matter much what he says or how ridiculous it sounds, as long as he makes us think he believes it.
It’s not just straight punditry anymore, it is an entertainment sideshow, and the more outrageous his take the more interaction, headlines, likes and clicks it will drive - he is competing with the likes of Goldbridge.

For international level it’s a bit weird to say - he’s an established PL LB who plays for one of the bigger teams and was extremely highly rated before going to a very unstable Chelsea.

We had, for comparison, Trippier at LB, Netherlands played Ake there (I think), it’s just G Nev being G Nev and needing to say something.

Yup, he literally can’t make a comment/opinion without going into complete overdrive and ott hyperbole about it. Whether it be proclaiming Foden to be the greatest player England have seen in years or going on about how great Southgate is at “tournament football”. And he does this thing where he’ll sit there on whatever show he’s on and say it and then keep repeating it…. Even Keane was mocking him about it with Trent the other day…

The problem he’s starting to have is that these opinions seem to be going wrong and then it leaves him in situations where he’s just going to be mocked.
If he’d paid any attention to Cucurella or Spain. He’d have seen Cucurella actually had a very strong end to the season at Chelsea. He’d also have seen that Spain have Morata up front. If I was critiquing Spain pre tournament I’d have said Morata would be the weak link (as he ultimately was)

I like him but man he’s becoming more and more irritating.

I can see where he'd be coming from with regards to club and looking a bit erratic and a liability. It's a common fault with England analysis. We see at Brighton a good player, many others deride his goal scoring at Brighton and use Chelsea form as a measuring stick. People in Spain saw what some at Brighton did that many can't.

Cucurella has been brilliant all tournament, a much derided player in England by fans and pundits.

Kane greatest ever England player who must play in the final to being very critical of him by end of the first half.

Still love him though - he's our Gary and it's good to see Man United ex players becoming well known (albeit imperfect) pundits

Part of Neville's appeal at first was his proximity to elite level football and he brought a lot of insight into that side of things as someone who had played nearly every season in the Premiership up until his retirement, he was well placed to tell you about old style football and the new that was starting to come into the English game.

Now he is over a decade removed from top level football as a player and nearly the same amount of time as a coach, he has very little to offer any more. He is an alright interviewer and should try and make that his niche from now because from an analysis stand point he is getting to be painful.

Gary Neville is enjoying himself.

When Gary says things which turn out right, he gets a mention, when he says things that are wrong, he gets a mention... even interviewing the PM before the big game. Career-wise life cannot be much better for the kid from Bury.

Yea, I agree with the posters here. Gary Neville is no longer providing any real analysis, just hyperbole and to a lesser extent hot takes, and I am sure it is a conscious decision - this is where he wants to be. I am actively avoiding him for some time now, before he was annoying, but nowadays he is just straight up insufferable.

It wasn’t about great. Saying “Cucurella is one of the reasons Spain wouldn’t go all the way” is an extreme statement. And Neville has the form for saying such stupid shit.

“Harry Kane might be best England player ever”
“Foden is the greatest England player in years “ just to name a few.

Yep. Cucu had been brilliant since January really.

I’ve really had just about enough of the sound of Gary Neville’s voice. At this moment in time.

Brilliant reaction by Cucurella who played a great tournament and did not get distracted by the clowns booing him.
Overall player of the tournament.

Defending Safegate but we shouldn't be surprised after he was part of the FA coaching set up

Money wise maybe, to me him and Keane have lost some dignity in their roles with Sky in the past couple years, or I'm just getting tired of them. Neville by turning into a hot take machine and Keane by playing a caricature of himself.

Cucharella cost spain in a goal in the final...

I mean, Neville give his opinion on the player before the tourney. What's he supposed to do? Say feck all and sit on the fence.

Firstly, it's Cucurella. Put some respect on the man's name for the love of god!

Secondly, you can give your opinion as a pundit without being a dick.

He's got previous for this kinda thing, he's trying to be entertaining and ends up regretting it.

I like Gary Neville and this isn't a huge deal. I fully expect him to hold his hands up with a sheepish grin on his next podcast but he tries too hard sometimes.

Sure, but he's in the entertainment biz. He's there to give out opinions. I don't think what he said was personal about the lad. Of course, now he'll have to get stick back at him and take it on the chin. That's the nature of his job.

And you could see where he was coming from. Cucurella was out of position a lot. I'm sure that was on instruction, but there was an avenue there for teams to exploit.

It's not like he was talking trash about Maldini!

The booing by the german fans against Cucurella was ridiculous, though. Not his fault the ref didn't give a pen.

And I'm sad to say i could 100% see are fans doing something similar.

Neville can say what he wants. Cucurella can say what he wants. I felt they were super harsh comments but nothing crazy over the top. People have been tagging Cucurella I with that quote the entire tournament. I bet it felt good to politely tell him ‘ha feck off prick’.

Exactly. That's what I dislike about sky's punditry now. It's trying to be hyperbolic for views and it just seems fake. It's why Keane is there to go on rants. Neville talks like he's challenging for the leadership of a party. Carragher is just trolling.

They seem to be trying to emulate football youtubers judging by how many pundits and reporters they let go last season, only to then add that Saturday social show.

Been watching some of his Stick To Football podcasts recently and I think he's a genuinely sound bloke who cares about United. Quite intelligent as well. Does have some flaws in his punditry but I'd much rather listen to his analysis than hear Micah Richards' cackle every 2 minutes.
