Gary Neville - Pundit

By far the best pundit on any channel, says what he sees; how he sees it. People here moan about him not being nice to us but we've been shite and I'd rather than than him being another pathetic Redknapp or Carragher... or worse still: a clown like Richards. I rather like Alan Smith as well

By far the worst he is a hateful hypocritical jumped up little xenophobe

His Huel ad reading makes me want to buy Huel even less than knowing Huel makes your shit smell like Huel.

Would it be better if he read ads about former Wimbledon and Charlton forward, Jason Euell? Alternatively, he could read ads about former Leeds and Liverpool ballbag, Harry Kewell.

Not sure if his shits would begin to smell like either of them, mind you.

I like Gary Neville as a pundit, despite him going overboard on criticizing us, almost as a way to show he isn't biased towards us. However I do think he massively crosses the line sometimes.

Proudly declaring you'll never call for a manager to be fired as though you want to protect United staff, and then in the next breath declaring Antony and Casemiro as two of the worst signings in the history of the club is a disgrace.

Better you tell a manager his time is up than literally call out someone like Casemiro who is still playing as being 'one of the worst signings in our history'. Just seems very double standards to me.

He, like many of our fans, suffer from only really knowing Fergie. It seems people are unable to separate Fergie deserving that sentiment and the 'manager' generically deserving that sentiment. It leads to a lot of inconsistent logic and double standards.

G. Neville is improving as a pundit, in my opinion. I think Keane can be really cringe at times, and that Scholes has the charisma of an octopus. I saw someone saying that Micah Richards is a bad pundit, but I disagree totally. Hargreaves does feel like a waste of air time to me though.

He wouldn't say that about Maguire, Sancho or Mount. I wonder why

Thats true. Most from these group are useless pundits and come from that United bubble that is outdated and no longer exists

Why do these really good and great Manchester United players tarnish the memories we have of them by going into the media and reveal themselves as being a bit thick and prepared to talk shite about current managers.
A few of them have tried management and have proven to be fecking useless at it so they have no credibility whatsoever in that field.
Just retire gracefully guys and zip it!

To be fair, they need to have work. And their names alone bring viewers in. Alternatively, you could give all of them a £2m yearly retainer to stay silent.

I suppose it depends on what you define as a good pundit.

Micah Richards is there as some sort of comic relief. The Jar Jar Binks, the Chris Tucker

You don't think they earnt enough in their playing careers??
They should go and play golf or do voluntary work or coach kids or put something back into the game instead.

Agreed. His cheerful, eternally happy persona is alright in small doses. But it definitely grates after a while.

And no sooner does he finish talking and you think you're free of him he pops up on endless WeBuyAnyCar ads in the commercials. "We hire any pundits" more like.

Stay silent?

I mean, it’s not really a question of them staying silent or any subjects at all, it’s just that Gary Neville has the odd tendency of taking things a bit too fecking far, like naming Casemiro as one of our worst signings ever. A sound debate on our transfer failings is fair enough, no worries, but there’s little reason to claim he’s one of the worst ever. Not to mention that you expect a bit of common sense from players that have a similar status, simply because it creates unwanted noise. Even Fergie called out Gary for being an opinionated little twat.

He definitely has form. He said this on the Overlap:

"Sir Alex rang me once on my comments on David De Gea. Once.
"It was in the second season of my punditry, so he let the first season go.

"Do you remember, his first season was a massive struggle, wasn't it? But in the second season, he started to improve, to the point he became one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

"Sir Alex rang me and said 'I got it last year, but I think you're being f***ing unfair son'."

He believes it is important for pundits to express their opinion, but took Ferguson's word on board.

I personally think it’s a massive shame, because you can easily have intelligent debates without making it too technical for people to take notice.

Years ago on Norwegian TV they had a former goalkeeper who’d spend time explaining the technical stuff behind a save, why such and such situations are actually more complicated then they look. I thought it was fairly interesting. For the last euros he had a daft entertainment section after the match where they’d essentially bring up clips from match and make a half arsed comment in a desperate attempt to make it funny.

It’s probably appealing to a younger generation, a bit like Micah Richards laughing.

It’s not like anyone wants to prevent him from expressing his honest opinion, it’s just the way he does it. As if he needs to be extra hard on the basis of being a former player.

He was never the same once he became a manager. When he started, he was a genuine breath of fresh air in the same way maybe only Alan Hansen or Andy Gray had been in the early 90s - at least in my lifetime. I felt he lost something once he returned from Valencia. That said, I still think he is more suited to punditry than live co-commentary as is Carragher.

Carragher is tiers above Neville. More funnier, more direct and with way more general knowledge than Neville. Neville showed multiple times how he barely knows players outside top clubs.

Carragher doesn’t take any shit either, and will attempt to spit in your face if he doesn’t like what you’re saying.

Hate is such a strong term, but he is the closest I'll come to using it for any former player. An absolute thundercnut when it comes to anything Utd, doesn't help he has been arse-licking Liverpool and City for a decade.

I don't know how people still like him, a massive hypocrite with a healthy dose of xenophobia. He can feck right off.

I think he is just not very good and has been put on a pedestal as this hard working intelligent pundit. I have never taken a shine to him since his "Rooney was the silent dominator" comment from years ago. Can't take him seriously.

He's a hypocrite and a prize bellend. I don't really care about him criticising United, we certainly deserve it. But this whole "tells it like it is" stuff is a load of rubbish. The guy crawls up City Group's arse at every turn, I wouldn't be surprised if he was on the take in some capacity. Feck him.

He talks with the confidence and arrogance of someone who’s the foremost expert in their field, yet actually doesn’t say anything more profound than your average bloke down the pub.

Unless I am missing something the comment about Casemiro is somewhat out of context. Neville is on the "It's Called Soccer" podcast which I am guilty of listening to where he was discussing ETH and was answering a question about what the managers legacy would now be. In a broader conversation he was discussing how after his opening two matches there was a panic and we ended up buying Antony and Casemiro for a combined sum of around 150M, at this point those do look like two of the worst deals we have ever done. He did go on to state that he hopes Casemiro does really well for the next 2 or 3 seasons and Antony makes some kind of breakthrough but at this moment in time those deals do look terrible, especially when you consider the players we did not sign in that period due to the funds having been used on these players.

The media have naturally clipped the Casemiro as one of our worst ever transfer deals line out of the conversation and made it into a clickbait headline. I really do not think too many people on this forum think paying 60M+ for 30 year old Casemiro was a particularly sensible use of funds nor would they argue that he has played all that well outside of his first 6 months here and yet we bite on the headline and start piling on Neville which is precisely what the outrage merchants want.

I know I shouldn't rise to the ridiculous bait, but I'm bored, so: how the hell have you come to that conclusion?

God I remember how dumb that comment was, when Young and Fellaini tore City apart that day. It was right at the start of Rooney's abilities falling off a cliff too.

He also says "I remember thinking.." a lot
And "whereby" but not using it correctly. Alllll the time. he just means "where".

I actually rate Gary but I think the issue is he's hugely oversaturated. I do think the current bunch of sky pundits are a good bunch but you couldn't make me hate them all quicker than forcing me to watch every single episode of the stuff they do for youtube/podcasts. I think if Sky used their pundits more in rotation instead of Gary being the main man he'd come across better.

I think Carragher comes across a bit better generally as he's just a bit more easygoing and makes things about himself far less.

Carragher is definitely better, can tell Neville doesn’t watch any football he’s not paid to watch now he’s a self styled public figure

Carragher still spouts twitter myths as well though. I definitely think he watches a lot of football and tries to be clued in, more so than a lot of TV pundits, but he's still prone to spreading misinformation and not checking his own facts

What xenophobia does Neville display? Bizarre line of thinking. He's annoying because he has an opinion on why the sun rises and leans way too hard against United to show he's unbiased, he's not a Nazi
He criticizes foreign players way more than English players.

It's bizarre some people didn't get that from him. I'm assuming that if you don't get how xenophobic he comes across in so much of his commentary it's because you share the same views.

Either that or other English people just don't hear it in him
