Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

This was the arguably the moment Game of Thrones died. How that line ended up in the show is beyond me.

The best comment, the seagulls are laughing (or crying) at that dialogue

Is season 4 where he gives the speech about being guilty?

If so then I take back what I said. It’s better than I gave it credit for. But I think some of the negativity might be because it’s where they started running out of book materiel. So you’ll have really great scenes and dialogue one moment followed by signs of we were going to be in for in future seasons.
Im trying to think what signs though? S5 had more signs given the way Dorne went.
s4 had the purple wedding, tyrions trial, viper v mountain, watchers on the wall, and the finale.
Oberyn was fantastic as was Tywin, but I guess both of these characters going was a sign of the acting going down (though theres only so much you can do if you have to keep repeating I dont want it)

It's funny that you can tell where the individual story arcs are in the books based on when they start to get shite in the show. Season 4/start of Season 5 is when Martin's Dorne plot ends, end of Season 5 is the end of Jon's, Arya might be half way through Season 6, Dany end of Season 5.

God damn this show killed me. To think the show runners openly admitted that they dumbed down things to make it easier for them to adapt, which is why we get things like Bran not using his powers much after Season 6 - simply because they couldn't think of a way to use them.

You've got a guy who can fly into the mind of anyone through time and can actively manipulate the past, fighting against creatures that need to be set on fire to truly kill, in a world with dragons that he can potentially warg into, in a kingdom that had a King who slowly turned mad and kept screaming "Burn them all" even as he was dying. But, nah, there's nothing you can do with that character...

Did you laugh like Bronn did whenever he heard "Dickon Tarly"?
Yes.......... Yes I did............ A lot

Ive just finished a fresh run through the lot, yes the last couple of series were nowhere near as good, and yes some of the stories were rushed and below par, still enjoyed it though.
Sansa reminding everyone Bran is a jaffa in the last episode will never not be funny.

Decided to do a rewatch and something big sticks out to me:
The early seasons were full of side characters who were played by actors who commanded your attention with great screen presence

Yoren
Lord commander Mormont
Benjen Stark
Craster
Syrio Forel
Qhorin Halfhand
Maester Luwin
The blackfish
Great jon Umber
Mance Rayder

And then the bigger ones like Tywin, King Robert, Barristan Selmy, Drogo

Almost Every single one of these characters were killed off by season 5 and I think it really hurt the series losing so many of them
Yeah the concept of anyone can die was a great one but it meant that so many great characters were killed off and replaced by Ramsey Bolton and Jack Sparrow. I mean Euron Greyjoy is so easy to get those two mixed up.

Jack Sparrow was horrific. Didn't overly mind the psychopath Ramsey, he was just given dumb stunts to do by shitty writing. But the character was fun enough.

I don't think he could carry a scene the way his father could. His father had nuance. the show was supposed to be shades of grey and they just changed it to characters being Good or down right evil.

No character in a tv drama show that some may consider to be fairly good at its best will ever be as bad as Euron Greyjoy. If you set out to write a laughably bad tv character you would most certainly come up with a much better and nuanced character than EG. Zero hyperbole here too, if anything it's an understatement.

People talk about last two seasons being terrible, but my god, the 4th season was a bore. Basically they stretched out the Tyrion trial over a whole season. Perhaps non book readers feel differently, but for me it was the worst season, despite the writing getting worse in the last few seasons.
What? the Tyrion trial was one of the best piece of tv ever shot.

Season 4 had great highs but for me was the beginning of the end, when the butterfly effect really took hold and the show lost its way. It's not nearly as bad as 5,7 and 8 but had too many silly things going on.

I loved it all the way to the last season.

Only was the Arya storyline with that faces stuff i thought was a bit boring.

Same here. Loved it all the way. But there's just some things I can't deny with 8. Way to stupid and made zero sense. Not even in an insane way. Dany fecking won, why tf did she burn it afterwards? And Jon never really fought the NK after all that. And Bran a king after saying he can't be king of anything. Who has a better story? Literally everyone their
Feck right off. Those 3 things really pissed me off.

I ment up untill season 8. Season 8 has issues. But 1-7 is great imo.

Battle of the basterds is some of the best i ever seen in a tv show. Same when Dothraki attack Lannisters. Viper vs Mountain.... Its just so much i enjoyed.

Yeah I meant the same. The scene with the standoff with the Walkers in S7 was epic. Battle of the Bastards is up their with Lord of the Rings for battles. That scene when Jon is in the chaos and knocked yer man off the horse. Jesus what a moment.

For sure. Tons of great moments.

Im re-watching it now. And its great. A positive for the later seasons, is battles. The battles got better in the later seasons. (Not 8)

- Don't fight the army of the dead in a straight fight, Jon says whilst planning the battle. Dothraki ride straight into the army of the dead and are wiped out
- turns out that even though all of the dothraki were wiped out there's still half of them left because....something.
- Jaime knowingly takes Brienne's honour but goes back to Cersei the next day because reasons. Also doesn't care about the people of Kings Landing anymore even though that's why he lost his own honour in the first place.
- Dany named all of her dothraki blood riders. That means they're bound to avenge her death. But none of them go after Jon. Not just the Dothraki, but even Grey Worm doesn't bother when he had no problem just executing random prisoners moments before.
- Dragons understand symbolism and would rather burn a big metal throne than the cnut who's just stabbed his mum.
- Everyone had a good laugh at Edmure Tully when he says he could be King, with the insults led by Sansa "I've literally done feck all" Stark. "Sit down, uncle Iolz". Erm, excuse me fecko but I don't think I will. I spent years in a dirty jail cell thanks to your brother's shite and I'm Lord of the Riverlands, therefore your equal, so maybe shut the feck up yeah? And, no, you can't just decide you're independent and still get a vote here, so fark off.

It's annoying because in earlier seasons when a character did something stupid it affected the how the story turned out (Rob thinks with his knob and fecks up an alliance, many people pay for it) but in Seasons 7 & 8 you had characters making stupid decisions because it made things easier for D&D to write. Actions result in consequences versus dipshit does thing because they need to get from A to B.

That's what the last seasons missed. And this was seen a lot in the action especially the long night episode. Characters swarmed, and saved by the camera cutting away.

I do think 7 wasn't as bad as most make out and still had some great elements going for it. Mixed is fair but S8 especially from ep3 basically made everything before it mean nothing.

Just finished season 5 on my rewatch and yep the drop in quality of the writing is so noticeable. The dorne plot, Arya in bravos, the sons of the harpy, the high Sparrow are all snoozefests and filled with cringe and nonsense. Oh and Stannis the child burner.

Honestly I might have to put season 5 right beside season 8 as the worst season of the whole series.

Ah yes I forgot all about the Dorne storyline. Definitely the turning point in writing quality for me.

It seemed that's where they were going with it too at one point. When on the journey north In season 4 Bran touches a weirwood tree and sees visions of dragons, white walkers and the mad king saying "burn them all".
They dropped the ball with basically every plot thread but Brans/3 eyed Raven might be the biggest waste of opportunity of all.

Damn I completely forgot about the weirwood vision. This boils my piss even more now.

Jeez the high sparrow and his endless speeches. And some of Harpy, like a bunch of putties from power rangers.
S5 had a lot of trash but had Hardhome too which is my fav EPs of the show. The last few eps were good and I thought S6 bounced back well from it.

Third rewatch. Forgot how good season 1 is, think it gets less praise because it’s less action oriented than the following series’.

This show is a 9/10 show until Season 5. I knew it was in trouble for the rest of the duration when Stannis out of nowhere burned Shireen at the stake with zero buildup (in a show that was themed around character conflicts) and then got dispatched off screen by Brianne of Tarth 2 seconds later.

And Dorne got fecked royally in this. There was no point in having anyone from Dorne in the show apart from Oberyn.

Still irritates me to this day. It was hard to even know if he was actually dead or not. For a show that likes display characters getting brutally murdered it was a really weird one.

Even Oberyn was pretty pointless in the show in the grand scheme of it. Came in for a few eps, was cool, then died without any real consequence or impact on the show (besides zombie mountain, which didn’t really change much either).

Wish they ran out of budget after season 4

What a show until then

Season 1 was clearly the best though, anyone who thinks season 3/4 was best is a filthy casual

Agreed. In the later seasons, the show became obsessed with pleasing the casual fans who wanted "big moments" and complained about the "filler". The show runners mentioned they tried to have a big moment in every episode by then and it made it worse imo. The best scenes in GoT were the scenes of people talking (and Hardhome).

The thing with Stannis got ignored at the time because the show had a lot of good will built up and he wasn't many peoples favourite character but it annoyed me and, in hindsight, was an early warning of the problems the show would have later on. Large armies disintegrating, smart characters acting dumb (Stannis kills his daughter to raise the temperature two degrees after his whole army has starved) and the villains becoming incredibly competent to add tension (Ramsey starves an entire army with about 4 people) are all things that happen later.

The problem with Dorne was they had to slim it down and ended up making their own smaller story for it. Unfortunately they're not much good without GRRM laying the tracks for them first.

Still irritates me to this day. It was hard to even know if he was actually dead or not. For a show that likes display characters getting brutally murdered it was a really weird one.

I remember people speculating that he was still alive two seasons later. At that point, they just wanted to kill of story threads though.

It's exactly why the first season is better.

Imo, after the end of the 3rd season, the show's quality falls off a cliff.

The series suffered because it used it's interesting and well written characters and stories as fodder, and there was too much fan service to all the khalissi and Jon snow fans.

Oberyn does the exact same in the books though, his whole death moves Dorne towards taking action against the Iron Throne. Granted in the show its then different at that point with the utterly awful Sand Snakes but Oberyn is pretty much book to screen at least.
Did they ever show Syrio dying?

No, Syrio never gets an on screen death. Ayras internal thoughts in the book point out the obvious to her, that hes fighting a fully armoured knight while unamoured and fighting with a stick so theres only one outcome really.

Theres some theory that Syrio turns in to Jaqen Hgar though.

Syrio into jaqen into the white horse theory lives on

In the books there are consequences that will happen as a result though, one way or the other. Oberyn’s brief stint in the book moves the entire Dorne plot. The sand snakes and pretty much all of Dorne on the show were completely pointless.
