Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

So from watching that:

-Why do they call Benjen "Coldhands"? Did I miss something?
-They should have given a better line to Benjen. Instead of "there is no time", when there was clearly time to get on the horse, they should have had him say something like "my time is up" (but better)
-The NK really should have gone for Drogon first since it had everybody on him, but more so as it was closer. I think they made a mistake in the filming and should have had the other dragon in the air but much much closer (but it was still a great scene). If it was explained that eventually that everything NK does has a reason, it would be cool, but I dont expect it to be so.
-D&Ds reason for Dany going makes sense, theres quite a few people there (Jorah and Jon) she cared or cares about. I think that should have been explained in the show. There wouldnt have been a need for Gendrys run and the raven being sent, (or he could have been sent but it would have been too late by the time he gets back). It may have been more impactful that she waited a couple of days, heard nothing, Tyrion says its to be expected and she cant risk it, but Dany says she wants to go as people like Jorah have put their life on the line for her.
Book reference. While I haven't read the books I have heard the name from people who have.

Why is Daeny switching to white when traveling into the North? Everyone knows black is more visible in the snow and retains more warmth from sunlight.

Makes no sense. Shit wardrobing.

Is seeing him through the 3ERs vision the same as face to face?
Yeah true but he did manage to get marked by the Night King when touched in those visions

The bring 7 men. A bunch of swords. And ale to burn the dead.

Why no bring raven? Or horse? Makes things easier?

Lol
They defo should have taken horses. Tyrion could have also maybe asked Bronn to get him some wildfire.

The writing in this show is so comically bad now. It's really feeling the pressure of the looming number of episodes remaining. Jon and company being stranded in the North could have been a couple of episodes in itself, instead we barely have chance to digest how dire their situation is before Dany has hopped onto the Drogon express to save the day in the nick of time again. I mean the emotional weight of those hero moments are really lost when they've become so predictable.

Ah well, Game of Thrones used to be gritty and surprising, now it's all soft around the edges. Im sure it has a surprise or two up it's sleeve but it relies far to heavily on cliche suspense/action set pieces when the Game and all it's nastiness is what made is so thrilling in the first place.

They used all wildfire in the big explosion at the end of last season. Agreed on the horses point though.

For example, during the main scene yesterday, I was emotionally invested and wanted Daenarys to ride to the rescue but it was also sad in that I was pretty sure she would. Old-school GoT--the show that most of us fell in love with originally--wouldn't have offered me that reassurance. Bear attacks and someone dies? Of course it's a bloke I don't recognise. Bloke falls away from Jon into a crowd of undead shit and gets torn apart? Yeah, don't recognise him either.
That whole combat scene with them being on the island in the middle - I just wanted that to be over with. The ending was so obvious, but they still spend like five minutes fighting before the dragons inevitable arrives. I think you're spot on as well, in previous seasons at least one of the known guys would've died there, which would made the scene more powerful and possibly worth the time invested in it. As it stands, nothing surprising happened and it just feels like filler.

I usually don't post in this thread, or follow it really, because it quite frankly it moves so fecking fast and I don't really care that much about the show. I always thought that it was a decent show, that is massively overrated by some, and this season is doing nothing to change that. I personally like that they've sped up a few things, because previous seasons had large parts that genuinely bored me because feck all happened. At least the writing was decent then though, which I'm not sure you can say about this season - as @AVARiCE, and many others I assume, already pointed out, a lot of very convenient things happen, and the show sets them up in ways that are pretty unbelievable.

Instead of whinging about the show appreciate the stuff they actually do to pull off these scenes.

Wow.. Unimaginable the amount of planning that goes into this.. I think everyone should see this to know how much actually goes into making this show as great as it is.. And all that for one scene.. I hope they can reuse the set atleast..

Wasnt Viserys flying towards the Night King and breathing fire along the way? Drogon was landed and he was in no immediate danger from Drogon. Hence he took out Viserys first.

I watched it again. It wasnt when he picked it up and aimed. Both dragons were breathing fire. Viserion was kinda flying to sideways though and kinda did turn by the time it was hit.

The Wall is warded against the dead. They Whitewalkers have been amassing numbers and biding their time until they could get a dragon. When it comes down to it, we'll probably find out that going north of the Wall was exactly the thing that started the invasion.

Which begs a question now (not sure if its been asked / answered before). How did the wight in s2 get to the wall to attack Mormont and then die at the hands of Jon / fire.

Book reference. While I haven't read the books I have heard the name from people who have.

I see.
Ban D&D from this thread then :P

TBF it was more than 7 men. When they focused onthe 7 in ep5, you could see in the background there were quite a few more travelling with them too. I can see why they didnt bring horses cos they would have needed at least 12-15 horses. (one horse each I guess).
Would they have had 15 or so horses at eastwatch? Maybe. lol[/spoiler]

Well I wont repeat the many complaints that exist with the travel times and the saves. In a vacuum they are not that bad, it's just that when you're used to what was delivered in the first 5 seasons, well it does feel like suddenly Michael Bay landed in the series.

Did Gendry's cool as feck war hammer stay behind the Wall.

The last couple of episodes have been a bit shit IMO, compared to the rest at least. Too fast, too much happening and not very clever.

Poor Tyrion has become a joke character.

Pretty much 80% of his dialogue with Danny was shit already talked about. (Break the wheel, you are not your father, etc)

I've got a horrible feeling that the writers are seriously losing their grip on this show.

He's mostly become a generic adviser to Dany, and a peace-broker between her and Jon since he knows them both. Any actual character - i.e., his drinking, wit, womanising etc has mostly been stripped away. His familial conflict seemed to be coming back into the fold regarding him and Jaime, but even that was boiled down to the whole armistice idea, instead of developing character at all.

Also I now think Tyrian is going to betray Dany

Hopefully. Would mean he'd actually do something interesting for the first time since about Season 5.

To be fair, I don't think anyone's questioning the shows special effects/production values etc. For as much as I've got my complaints about that episode, the visuals when Daenerys arrives on the dragon coupled with the music as she takes down the wights was excellent. As was the action during the Field of Fire battle. Rather it's the dialogue/plot that's coming under scrutiny.

 Hey sexy. @AVARiCE

I think ultimately the reason why GoT (early seasons) worked so well was the complexity of writing, clever dialogue and reduced fantasy elements. In fantasy its very easy to use those elements as a way of solving problems, coming up with magic or a creature to fix issues with the plot. I don't overly blame the writers to be fair, I imagine they'd have thought George would have written the next damn book by now. But what it shows imo is how difficult and time consuming it is to create a story with limited plot holes that makes sense and has enough complexity to make it engrossing. The TV writers have failed in some areas and succeeded in others imo (but the good tends to glossed over while the bad is torn to pieces).

Part of the problem is that in terms of characters we don't actually have that many left:

Main Characters:
- Daenerys
- Tyrion
- Arya
- Bran
- Jon
- Sansa
- Cersei
- Jamie

Secondary Characters
:
- Bronn
- Melisandre
- Hound
- Missandei
- Greyworm
- Jorah
- Brienne
- Davos
- Podd
- Meera
- Littlefinger
- Varys
- Tormund
- Theon
- Yara
- Samwell

Other Characters:
- Sandsnake Mum
- Cersei Maester fella
- Euron
- Mountain
- Blacksmith fella (can't remember his name)
- Samwell bird
- Flaming Sword man

I think that's mostly everyone. Given that you need enough characters to survive the ending we don't really have many left as sacrificial lambs. We still have like 10 hours of episodes left and when/if the Lannisters are finally defeated a number of those characters will probably die. They probably could have had Bronn die but then who would Jamie have to talk with? Just Cersei. Flaming Sword guy/Hound/Jorah/Tormund were expendable in the last episode, but Jorah being healed to then die would be stupid. Tormund is needed given he's the only Wildling character left and he's required to give them a voice. So Hound was the only one left who could have died. I think ultimately what they probably fecked up on was not providing us with enough new characters during Season 5/6 so when they did die in this season is actually meant something.

If you think about who's died in this season, it's only been SandSnakes (yawn), Old Thorn Lady and a Dragon. Not too surprising though given they killed like 10 characters in the finale of last season though.

this should have been the most talked about death of the entire show. unfortunately, a large amount of people read the leaks and expected it.

Damn one drag down.

Another good episode don't mind the pace at all.

I think they needed to lose a dragon to realise that they couldn't just count on the dragons to win the war. Humans are pretty fecked tho, not sure how they can win.

Am I the only one who wants the night king to win and absolutely obliterate everyone? I really hope the show doesn't have a happy ending.

I remember Mortal Kombat Conquest on tv, it finished with literally all the good characters dying and shao khan about to kill Raiden. I must have been about 9 or 10 and i still remember the impact it had on me. Unpredictability and heroes dying makes for more memorable tv. Imagine Phoebe had died in friends, it'd have been much more intriguing.

Action saves the day. Again. That said the battle scenes are good.

Tbh they were alright, but it was mostly just the humans battling off an endless horde of zombies without much reprieve because of a plan that was daft in the first place. Battle-wise in the North, Hardhome was probably much better. As was the one a couple of episodes back.

You mean you never saw The One Where Joey Kills Everybody?

"Now I Have A Dragon
Ho-Ho-Ho"

Anyone else noticing the Night King throwing out a seig heil just before he took out Viserion :D

Query... Night King managed to find some big ass chains to drag the Dragon out of the lake pretty quickly. So...

1. Another plothole.
2. Witch King knew it was going to happen and has the chains prepared.
3. Witch King has a fetish.
