Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

Genuinely a conversation between my friend and me last night when we were talking about the pacing of this season:

Yep, need Jon to travel and jusk ask Davos... So no fingers eh? Better than Little finger I guess? Amrite? Eh?
So, the last leader you followed, how did that turn out?

All probably comes down to budget and parts of the main story left. If they are saving budget for the main wars to make it as epic as possible (eg battle of KL and battle vs WW), it makes sense to make cuts in other places. I think 5 or 6 seasons of build has been perfect for 2 seasons of end game. I think cutting down on some stuff (like the time it takes Sam to find how to cure greyscale makes sense - esp as hes been there for a long time now). I think the time shift has happened as we can see some weeks even months have passed.

That would be quite something. Maybe he was a bastard Targ? The hair shaving thing would be quite something.
Re' Sansa, if that does happen, it can then be pointed to one of the earlier seasons in hindsight where Tyrion said 'youll outlast us all'
Yeah I mentioned that bit about Sansa earlier, seeing as how they love them some foreshadowing.

Great thanks.

So heres a question, does anybody remember what happened to Jon Snows fleet? Im pretty sure it was Stannis originally. BUt when he went to Hardhome im sure there were a shit load of ships that got them to a point before they got on rowing boats:

With Yaras fleet gone, is it possible Jon offers these up to Dany to take KL in exchange for Dany offering her services / armies to stop the WW?

Sadly I think the show has just forgotten about Stannis' fleet ever since those unfortunate events occurred for Stannis at the end of season 5.

Watching season 1 over again now for the first time in years. It's such great television, it's really making me remember how much I love this show. Ned is fantastic, Jamie was great, loved Robert and Cat is just bleh.

Anyone found the last/main scene funny? It was like some b grade film the way the whole thing was directed and acted. The way Euron 'landed' was cartoonish at best.

The scene overall was awesome but the editing was pretty horrible in some places, like it was running at 1.5x the speed. I get that they were trying to convey that it was blindingly chaotic but I always prefer to see what's happening during intense action sequences rather than feel visually overwhelmed by them.

Yara's fleet is gone but Dany has still got some boats she had on her own I think. Though a big part of her fleet is destroyed now.

Oh yeah, Dany had that ship Jorah got for her. Cant remember what other ships she had? But yeah, she defo had some before Yara and Theon came to strike a deal.

He used them to make pyres for children for no reason.

I dont even remember this

@Reafer
Ellarias troops arent decimated, are they? I thought they were heading off to get them? But before they could join up Yaras troops were destroyed?
Not sure why I spoilered this either...

Surely the smart thing to do with those two Dornish hostages is to use them to stop any Dornish armies fighting against you? Not sure what purpose they serve for the story otherwise. Don't think anyone would have complained if they were all killed.

A question with a bit of speculation so I'm gonna use the spoilers
I keep reading and hearing everywhere that Bran might be the one to tell Jon about his mother and Rhaegar (being his dad) but do we even know for Bran that has put 2 and 2 together for sure, that the baby who was given birth is Jon ?

Cersei isn't smart though. She likes to think she is.

No-one will complain if they're killed and to be honest, they deserve to die for killing the one, truly innocent Lannister. I have a feeling it's going to be a gruesome scene.

I think it was implied he heard when she whispered to Ned. And he put 2 and 2 together that Ned came home with a baby who wasnt really his.

Smart thing. But in the words of Cersei "I choose Violence". (given it directly involved her only daughter, one of them will pay. Badly)

The Mountain will probably be involved

It's kinda easy to remember just how good the show was in the beginning, seeing as how bad it is now. They should have stuck with adapting one novel for each season.

Think the problem was less adapting each novel individually and more that when the showrunners had to make cuts/trim down stuff from the novel, they had no idea what to do without the main material. It's still good entertainment now but the writing decline has been quite stark.

I guess. I don't see what purpose keeping them alive only to kill them more gruesomely the next episode really serves for the show though beyond cheap spectacle. Which is fine really (this is game of thrones after all) but a bit of a waste.

I particularly don't see the point of keeping that one last sand snake alive as you could do the gruesome death stuff with just Ellaria (who was the one actually behind Cersei's kid's death). Where keeping that sand snake alive would make sense though is if you had her interacting with Bronn, the only remaining character she has any vague links to. If I was writing the show I'd probably use the Tyrion/Bronn/Hot Sand Snake conection to give a rescue attempt a go.

But Bronn's whole character is that he's supposed to be a fairly cut-throat assassin who isn't necessarily evil as such but who will ultimately do whatever he can to earn money and advanced his own social status. Writing him into a cheesy rescue love angle with a shit character who's indicated she'd maybe sleep with him would be a pretty awful subplot tbh.

Thats the whole gift element. You have two characters, mother and daughter. Gifting Cersei both, one to basically get revenge on
and the other to use as bait / hostage or leverage.
It makes sense if they go that route.

The structure of the things we're not supposed to mention in this thread wouldn't really allow a one to one adaption for a TV show. Plus there are problems with the source material that were inevitably going to bleed in to the TV Show.

I think the main problem with the TV show is less that it is adapted poorly and more that it is (in places) straight up written poorly.

Oh no, I was more thinking that Tyrion would pay Bronn more money to buy him back onto his side and Bronn would pragmatically agree to back the side that looks like winning. Bronn as a character isn't exactly the sentimental love rescue sort.

Poor choice of word for my part. Yeap, the troops are still at Dorne supposedly, but without Ellaria or any of the Sand Snakes to mobilize them, they're basically out of the game... on to the forgotten list. I expect Ellaria and the last Sand Snake to remain far far away from their troops :p because..
  • Ellaria and her will be captives for a long time at Kingslanding, doubt they'll escape soon, Ellaria especially. Death and be forgotten most likely.
  • Bronn may help the SS girl escaped, but it'll be a long way back.
  • Way to Dorne is far and difficult. Land? Farther and tough. Fastest is by Sea, but Euron rule the seas.
  • Keeping them two hostage or either one at least will ensure Dorne troops won't move to help Daeny.
  • also there are some problems with screen-shooting the real life locations they used for Dorne (Season 6), got this info from somewhere.

She could kill Ellaria which leaves Tyene as the heir to Sunspear. Jaime promised Bronn a "much better girl and a much better castle." for accompanying him to Dorne. Tyene and Sunspear would do Bronn.

Maybe a forced marriage and she gets to go back to Sunspear completely broken after losing her entire family and under Cersei's thumb from afar. One of Dany's allies out of the way.

Then again, Euron did get stab by the spear.
Will he die? or turn to zombie under Cersei's rule like the Mountain. Similar to Oberyn, the Sand Snakes love to play with poison, so I'm sure the spear is coated, plus they won't show that scene if they're not going with this. Assuming he become a zombie, not sure if the Ironborn will follow him.

If Euron die, and Yara still in captive, the Ironborn won't follow Cersei. Wow, will we see Theon become their leader  that would be an amazing twist-storytelling.

I miss Ghost.

Well I've avoided this thread because I don't want to read any spoilers having only just started watching GoT. I've been meaning to watch it since it first started but never got round to it. I'm only on Episode 6 of the first season and I honestly have to say I really don't get what all the hype is about. It really isn't anything special so far. I must be missing something, but I watched ep 1 and 2 and only bothered to put 3 on earlier tonight because there was sod all else to watch. I'm really hoping it gets better. I must admit I am slightly more intrigued now than I was earlier tonight, but still, it's got a long way to go for me to rate it anywhere near as highly as so many people seem to.

The first seasons are the best...

Finish the first season at least. If you still don't feel like keep going, abort.

Many consider the first season to be the best, narratively. It's definitely the best written.

Though the pay off for most the story arcs comes in the last few episodes. Stick with it.

 I will watch till the end of season 1. If I was going to give up I would have after the 2nd episode. I should have, but will continue on now and at least finish the season.
