Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

It was a really good and enjoyable episode overall, but that food/shit/book montage in the Citadel was a worse directed scene than anything involving the Sand Snakes. Horrible stuff, and completely disengaging. More so than Ed Sheeran, for me.
Reminded me of Breaking Bad. Definitely out of place in GoT

Exactly. It's unbelievable that anyone could have thought that fit in with GoT's established style/mood.

Complete waste of a scene and seemed more like some hipster HBO exec trying to be edgy than anything relevant to the plot

Was a very well-edited and funny sequence in my opinion. Don't know why you're getting so worked up about it.

I was literally about to post something similar. Absolutely fine scene and gave an update to what Sam's life had been like since he got there. A similar one was used in this weeks Preacher, and that one I did find annoying because it went on for far to long and was just them literally repeating shots. So stop getting your knickers in a twist.

The scene with Daenerys and the others at the end is probably the most pointless and silly scene in any episode. They didn't need to spend nearly 10 minutes showing them walking up a long flight of stairs. Don't make the episodes longer if you're going to make me watch someone walking up some stairs for ten minutes. Also, when they get to the room with the map in it and she says "shall we begin?"...Begin what? Looking at the map? I mean, ordinarily this is something you might maybe need to do, BEFORE deciding where to sail all of your ships to? They spent this long building up to something that just made the characters and the writing look stupid.

I get that Ed Sheeran wanted to be in an episode, ok...but just have him in it then. They've had cameos before but it's been exactly that. Cameos...people who happen to be celebs filling roles that needed to be filled. Ed Sheeran's role/character was to be in GOT so that Ed Sheeran could be in GOT. Why was he singing? Why did we need a cllose up of his face? I know he can sing, I know what Ed Sheeran looks like. It's not a chat show. It was a pointless scene alltogether too, again. Arya doesn't need humanising, or to realise she is human. She stayed as Arya instead of becoming a faceless assasin precisely for this reason...there was a whole episode dedicated to making this point. This is WHY she is currently doing what she's doing. It doesn't need re-inforcing.

I enjoyed the rest of it other than these two scenes. The Sheeran scene especially though was just a distraction and felt like it lowered the tone of the whole program. Kind of like listening to a Bob Dylan album and then in the middle of it he covers an S Club 7 song for no reason.

I don't tend to overanalyse this series in that regard but now that I suppose I finally have the bug for the show, I have to say I find your take spot on. Although I'd add that the Greyjoy scene seemed fairly out of place too, suddenly he's traveled across the seas, arrives for 5 minutes and then departs again? Felt out of place for me

Nausea was beginning to take hold watching the Samwell segment but well played

I liked the Jon & Sansa exchanges, a treat from a fan perspective to see the Stark family reunited - Bran soon enough too

The opening scene was brilliant. Giant whitewalkers?

Just rewatched the episode, at the beginning of the Cersei/Jamie scene where Jamie said they cannot feed their men and horses, I realized something really weird about the whole series. Why the Lannister is the only house that has any kinds of concern about finance or food to maintain their army? The other one I can think of was Stannis Baratheon when he went to the Iron Bank. Now who is backing Dany, the City of Mereen?

"Our last working mine ran dry three years ago." - Tywin Lannister

They're running out of money and they need to stay in power in order to retain any credibility they have left. Keep also in mind that Casterly Rock doesn't produce anything, there's no kind of agriculture or livestock there. Here's the clip:

As for Daenerys, she's had financial issues throughout the series (see the way she got the Unsullied). That's where Tyrion can play a big role. Last season he convinced her to create an alliance with Yara and use her ships. We also know that Houses Tyrell and Martell are backing her:

This is true. I'd be annoyed if that was say, Bruno Mars or Justin Timberlake in that scene. But since I don't really know much about Sheeran, can't say I was too bothered. As for your spoiler, I'd be upset if that were the case. That would mean giving more air time to what should obviously remain a small, bit-part.

I'd be surprised if
Arya didn't slaughter them all after they tried to rape her.

The one with ed sheeren?

I'm just guessing here but maybe it's because it breaks the fourth wall and this is a fantasy show - not reality tv.

It was so cringy - got is so epic - no need for rubbish like that

pretty sure he meant the shit-book-shit montage.

I agree with @noodlehair about the last scene with Deneyris. Her whole story is quite cheesy to be honest. Real steriotypical Hollywood hero stuff with that tune blaring out everytime she has a moment of strength/achievement.

Also don't like the greyjoy one bit. He's nowhere near as interesting as he thinks is or the show is trying very hard to portray him as.

Loved the opening scene though. Best part of the episode for me. Rest was alright.

No, the Sam montage.

Jon does mention the night king was last at hardhome, and says Eastwatch by the sea must be defended. I'm guessing he is expecting them to try and breach there, hence the wildlings manning the wall there.

Yeah but what he doesn't know is the Nightking attacked Bran and the Cave is back in the middle.

Re-watched the episode, actually it was quite good. Didn't mind the Ed Sheeran bitt, don't know why people hate on him. The Sam bit dragged though.

like I've said already - for me I hated it because it broke the fourth wall and GOT is a fantasy show... not reality tv.

It doesn't need cameos like that - makes it less serious and cringy

My problem is how obvious it was. There's been lots of cameos in GoT before but nothing that had the person fill up the entire shot. I don't think that he was bad though, to be honest.

Yeah to be honest Deneyris is my least favourite character because she makes no sense.

The series is full of these strong woman characters, but the rest of them are actually shown to be strong. Deneyris constantly looks petrified and unsure of everything, has to surround herself with people who tell her what to do all the time, then still manages to constantly feck it up, then falls out with them for dumb reasons or throws teenage style strops at them. The only thing that gives her strength any credibility is that she parades the dragons around, and even then she's spent most of the time either unable to control them or having them locked in a dungeon because she's scared of them. Sansa's character is what Deneyris should be really.

I don't mind the Greyjoy guy. I don't think it helped that he was just introduced out of nowhere with a fudged in back story, unlike all the other main characters who's character and story have been developed over time. When he first appeared I presumed it was some past character that I'd forgotten about. I think he can be redeemed though, and it'll be interesting to see what this "gift" is.

What I got from this scene was that the intention was to humanise the Lannister army and to also enforce the idea that just because these men are fighting on behalf of the people Arya wants to kill, doesn't mean they want to. They have no other choice; it's either fight to protect the crown (whether they like the Queen or not) or die.

Constantly putting all these close ups on probably the least expressive actress of the bunch doesn't really help either.

Maybe cos Dany is a teenager?^^

Her rise makes sense to me. She went from being sold as a wife to an army leader, to taking over that army (kinda), giving 'birth' to dragons (having them stolen briefly), getting an actual army and needing counsel from others.
Shes finally home. Before it seemed like she wanted to come across cos it was her birth right. Now she wants to do things for the betterment for all (even if it means not everything will be agreed upon).

Had no issues with Sheeran being used, it was a shock cos i kinda forgot he was going to be in it. I think they could have been more downplayed over it however rather than just having to show him every second during the scene.

I'd be surprised if
Arya didn't slaughter them all after they tried to rape her.

I dont think that will happen. Well not for that reason anyway.

It really is fecked up :wenger: I can understand not liking the guy, or even hating him but to go on a site and actively participate in an insulting campain is sad.

It is sad. Ed Sheeran is one of the low key celebrities that has made good of his talent and yet people still despise him due to the high levels of jealousy ruling their minds.

How did bran get beyond the wall again? And where is that cave?

got_white_walker.jpg

Bran met Samwell at the Nightfort (that was how they got over the wall).
Bran then went to Crasters Keep (they got captured and was able to escape when Jon attacked it).
The 3 eyed raven cave isn't marked on any map i've seen. Just a rough estimate and they have it roughly between Crasters Keep and the Fist of the First Men (that was the place where Sam found the Dragon Glass).

So the White Walker Army is a long way from the east shore. But then the last time we had a confirmed sighting was at the 3 Eyed Raven cave and that was Season 6 episode 5. So they've had 6 episodes to march back to the coast I guess.

So the White Walkers' route is all over the place if they're heading for the east coast again. Doesn't make much sense but anyway...

Think you're reading too much into that personally. They'll show up wherever the plot needs them to.

I find the map to be very inconsistent with the story. The timeline of the show doesn't reflect the scale of the map, the location of key cities doesn't make sense geopolitically, and the map itself doesn't make sense geographically. It's an ugly clusterfeck.

But hey, the biggest fantasy story ever told, so who cares?
Anybody else ever load up one of these after an episode to get your bearings?
