Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

The Dorne storyline has been a big disappointment. Bad acting, hokey fight scenes and stilted dialogues.

That sandie with the slapped arse for a face really pisses me off.

Tyrion is brilliant, he can talk absolute arse and I'd find it enjoyable. Just get him in a room with Bronn and have them talk about whatever. Now that would be good tv.

Anyone know how involved George R. R. Martin was with the show? I know he wrote a episode each season but maybe his lack of presence is hurting the writing.

I believe they've fallen out. The show is going to give away the ending before he gets to and I think he assumed they would wait for him. He didn't write an episode this season either.

Really? That's news to me. I read that he told the writers the ending because he wanted to, just in case something was to happen to him. As far as I know he's not writing any episodes because he said it takes something like 2-3 months and he would rather work on book because the show is catching up.

He's not been involved at all this season according to his blog because he wanted to spend his time writing the book. Don't think there's much to suggest they've fallen out unless you count his very non-committal responses to anything show related.

I started watching 6 months back and finished the first 4 seasons pretty quickly, now having to wait for one episode every week where a lot of the times nothing really happens is a real pain

Odds on Littlefinger doing a deal with Stannis?

Cant believe that Tommen wouldnt just get his kings guard to slaughter those fanatics and protect his queen. I dont see that this will go well for Cersei, completely unnecessary fight to pick.

I really thought Sansa was going to man up this episode, bit disappointed really.

Arya is going to become someone else?

Treading very (very) carefully here... what is the policy around asking them book readers about things/differences between the book and TV show that have happened up until now that don't spoil things that will happen in the future?

@Cina ? @Eboue ?

I was thinking about this AN. From what I know, they've been swapping stuff about and messing up the timelines a little bit. So it's probably safer not to ask just in case the writers wanted to save bits for future seasons.

So Loras and the Queen have a trial coming up...
anyone thinking 'Trial by Combat' (tm)? I thought he (Loras) was supposed to be quite tasty. And then we've got FrankenMountain sitting on the sidelines. They wouldn't have showed him getting pumped up with chemicals earlier in the season if they hadn't planned on using him surely? I imagine he looks like Bane.

Everyone loves a good trial by combat!

That whole trial was stupid.

I found it pretty implausible, and it felt like they wrote the whole scene on the back of a fag packet.

The Queen getting arrested is terrible for the crown, why would they let that happen? Especially when it came down to one blokes word... Why do it in front of Grandma Tyrell? Why wouldn't she just pull all their funding and whatever and ruin the Lannisters almost instantly? And why would Tommen just sit there?

Yeah that was an extremely weak scene, unconvincing in so many ways. It's like a different show from last season's scenes with Tywin and Oberyn. And I can't wrap my head around Cersei's thinking. Sure she can get rid of Loras and Margaery but surely she knows this will have terrible consequences for the crown, not to mention there's no way those fanatics aren't going to go after herself and Tommen next.

As Tywin once said "You're not as clever as you think you are".

I.E. Cersei is playing the game but not thinking through the consequences. With Tywin gone, she's becoming uncontrollable. No way would Tywin have allowed Cersei to arm the religious nuts, he'd have slaughtered them all asap.

As if that High Sparrow has any power! Not sure if that's how it went down in the book, but it was terrible writing either way. Still annoyed by that episode, it was beyond awful. Stories going nowhere, characters not developing and we're not seeing the interesting stories.

Tommen is a waste of air.

See @Annihilate Now! post. That High Sparrow is a nobody, do you expect me to believe they have that much power? House Tyrell are rich powerful house.

Think it's really missing Tywin and his awesome manipulation of King's Landing politics, which formed the base of the show. It's all gone a bit flat there now (see that trial for instance), and the other story-lines aren't really doing enough at the moment to hold it all together, bar maybe what's happening up north.

Cersei has given them that power though, unoficially. Also worth noting that they effectively overthrew the existing church in Kings landing when they caught the old guard at brothels, so they have the power of the church, under new management.

That said, i shouted at Tommen for doing nothing, that was silly.

I noticed the shift between scenes has become less smooth and is a bit robotic. It's a bit like a day of several critical matches where the TV camera jumps from one place to the next. The process of getting to the trial was quick and the trial itself was predictable. The long, long and tedious travels of Tyrion have sidelined him in the series, while the other characters haven't filled the space, leaving this latest series disappointingly shollow - thus far!!

Tommen is pallid. The fight scene was tosh compared to the previous fight scenes. The religious fanatics are clearly the metaphor for ISIS rather than the old inquisition style. Even Snow has become flaky as Lord Commander.

The biggest issue I had with that is that there was no actual evidence or reasoning for Marjorie to be arrested. The little bloke that Loren shagged gave him away by talking about his birthmark sure, but none of that proves that Marjorie was 'in the know' about it. Seems silly.

I am quite interested to see how that one develops, its one that I cant see Cersei winning, but with G.R.R.M it seems like exactly the sort of twist/spanner in the works that he would like to throw - although it gets a bit repetitive seeing the Lannisters win all the time.

The other bit that intrigued me was Littlefinger - I just cant quite see what his end game is. My speculation is;
He ultimately wants power for only himself. He knows that Stannis and the Boltons are going to fight, and wanted to try to drag the Lannisters into that conflict as well. He has control of the Eyrie himself, so I am guessing that he wants everyone else to weaken each other, then he can swoop in and mop up the pieces. He could either then rescue his ally Sansa and make himself Warden of the North, or just make her Warden of the North but basically his pawn.

@PlayerOne and others - dont underestimate the power of the church. I do agree though that Cersei is basically trying to play the game, but she is too emotional and headstrong (and just mean) compared to Tywin, who was the ultimate pragmatist.

No that sounds awful, this thread is for those who believe in a world where the books don't even exist. In fact people who even know how to read or write books are killed on sight.

I saw a post from someone in here yesterday highlighting some of the differences between the episodes aired so far and the books, they should have been threadbanned, exiled and then slaughtered.

Yeah it was bad. Oh no, a whip!

And how did they just waltz into a palace like that anyway?

Oh there plan was probably the worst plan ever conceived... actually, that's not true... because they didn't even seem to have anything remotely resembling a plan. What if she wasn't in the garden? Would they just have walked round the Castle until they found her? I thought the whole idea was that nobody was to know that Jamie wasn't there? And yet, he's freely walking round the gardens... fecker could have bumped into anyone!

Very good point and it's something I noticed too. I sometimes watch the show with my mate and brother and they both studied film and TV, so they were moaning all the time.

There has been some odd edits and cuts this season. As if some of the acting and story isn't bad enough.

Funny that maybe one of the weakest episodes of the 4.5 seasons so far should produced one of the best lines: "..the dwarf lives until we get him to a cock merchant"!

Right up there with any of the other top lines that sit on the shelf below: "I understand that if any more words come pouring out your cnut mouth, I'm gonna have to eat every fecking chicken in this room."!

Otherwise I was disappointed by Littlefinger (love the character, hate the actor), those sandbags, the fight scene, Olenna (although I expect that to be rectified sharpish) and Sansa. That bathtub scene was going so well until she got all moany: "you can't frighten me here".

Ramsay will find a way to defeat Stannis.
Sansa will kill Ramsay.
Theon will die helping Sansa to escape with Brienne - redemption of sorts.
