If we are that keen on him and perceive him as a far better option than any of the alternatives, what is stopping us from giving him a £15m sign on bonus to compensate for Barcelona not paying him the remaining €17m?

Technically he did sign the new deal with them and they might not owe him anything. If the difference between him coming here and not is the £3m per year difference for the next 4-5 seasons, our best bet might be to pay up.

The idea that there is some “moral” grey area around whether Barca should have to pay their players is just ……. No.

“we don’t do oil money here” … because all of your money comes from fans at games who earned that money doing good deeds for the poor?

Barca signed contracts agreeing to pay employees set terms regardless of circumstance. If only one person shows up to watch the games they owe that same money. And from a moral standpoint? If Barca were unwilling to tell players up front they should only have to pay them “when circumstances were right” when they had options to sign with teams who would pay them no matter what, then that makes the team fraudulent, not just morally in the wrong.

The whole “Chelsea could be in play” thing strikes me as Barca being desperate. Barca wants back wages covered and a very solid fee, and the agent wants additional agent fees. They need to create the appearance of competition for all of that. Frenkie and United have all the leverage here.

I think we will if it comes to that. Wait until deadline day and give Barca a bigger transfer fee so Barca can pay him in return. I thought United going from 65M -> 75M guaranteed was a way of doing that but Barca are being particularly stingy.

Both clubs want the deal to happen so it will happen.

The only downside is Barca can't replace him with Bilva if this saga runs that long.

This has been mentioned a couple of times and was seriously discussed as a possibility by the clubs last week seemingly but there appear to be legal issues, FIFA/UEFA rules and tax complications that would make this impossible.

They know what’s going on, and frankly as much as we like to follow the fans don’t need to know.

Oh they would like to know, especially if the club is yet again being led by the nose, by a Spanish club... and all for a player who hasn't said yet whether he wants to come to United.

This thread needs to be taken down now. He’s not coming we should just forget about him, especially as he’s already pledged his allegiance to Barca despite being owed a fortune by them in deferred wages. He doesn’t want to move to Utd end of story.

This is where you depart the muppet train, thanks for making it this far, you did well. Choo Choo!

How much more do we need to offer though? €75m+€10m is as close to the limit as we can get unless you're suggesting we go to €90m+ which would be batshit crazy and warranting cancelling the deal

If FDJ wants to stay for some bizarre reason and be abused by a club that owe him £17m in deferred wages then that’s his and his agents problem, not ours. Now move on.

This is one that may be drawn out to the winter window. I think De Jong is finding it difficult to accept that he’s being pushed out the door. When he’s stuck on the bench and reality hits that he is no longer an automatic starter then maybe he’ll reconsider his stance.

Yeah, we'll show him, we'll not buy anyone and be shit again next season, oh man, that's going to get him good. It's 2022, United have no business signing FDJ, so we are going to have to put up with a lot of shit and go above and beyond to get it done. When we're back to winning the league and challenging for the CL we can tell players to do one, until then, put your shame to the side.

You are entitled to your opinion but saying the thread needs to come down because YOU don't believe he's coming is a bit far don't you think?

Where has he pledged his allegiance to Barca? He's said his preference is to stay but he must have told Ten Hag he wants to join United for us to stay around this long.

You have absolutely no proof that he doesn't want to move to United at all, so no, the thread should stay open until United brief were done or he signs

How so? If United agree to pay FdJ a signing bonus matching his deferred payments, shouldn't have any impact on Barcelona's books or violate any FIFA/UEFA rules.

Or alternatively why don't you just press ignore thread if you really dislike it so much?

No ones forcing you to be here and to post are they?

Finding it (mildly) amusing to pop in here every 2/3 days and seeing literally the same argument on every page. Great commitment.

Of course. And not just the bosses at Barcelona. The fan would too closer to season start when they can't register their new players.
Cules already want him out if it means they get another shiny new toy in Bernardo Silva

If this deal ends up falling apart and he stays United will not be the big loser. Barca will end up keeping a player they don't want/need who is on huge wages they can't afford. FDJ will end up staying at a club that is trying to force him out, has no plans of starting him and does not want to pay him his agreed on contract. If this is a game of poker, United seem to have the winning hand and the longer this goes on, the more pressure on Barca/FDJ to sort out the contract/deferred payment issue.

As long as United and FDJ don't give in, the pressure will mount on Barca to do something. Their options from what I can tell:
  1. Wait for another club to swoop in with more lucrative offer than United
  2. Work out deal with FDJ where he is happy and all parties agree he stays
  3. Head into the season with potentially unhappy FDJ on huge wages that they seemingly can't afford
  4. Resolve deferred payment issues with FDJ so he is happy to accept transfer deal to United
#1 seems unlikely
#2 also seems unlikely since Barca have much cheaper options in midfield and are clearly trying to get rid of him w/o paying
#3 is possible but from all reports this appears to be a worst case scenario for Barca
#4 as time goes on this is the most likely outcome IMO

The longer this drags out, the more pressure is on Barca to find a solution. FDJ has a huge contract and a team. For United, ideally we would get him in asap, but if we don't get him, we can always find another player or work with what we have got. The deferred payment and size of FDJ's contract is really a problem for Barcelona and Barcelona only to solve. That is the pressure and eventually I think they cave and accept something close to what United have offered.

Please don't close the thread, otherwise I will have to go back to reading about how every other club its signing the players they want without it seems much difficulty.
That's not the 'United way'

Tension, drama, a lot of he said (but apparently he didn't) or no 'they' said... or no his next door neighbour said his house is up for sale. He's on holiday, no its his honeymoon, here's here, he's there he's everywhere!!... except OT.
Theatre of Dreams indeed... its nightmares at the moment!
We wouldn't have it any other way..would we?

So when’s the next crescendo of optimism quickly followed by a downturn to depression going to happen?

I feel like this stupid saga has at least another one in it, as long as the reputable sources change their tune and say it definitely won’t happen.
